3 513 St. Catharine—St. Margaret Parish Family
Dear Parishioners,
Congratulations to the newly minted Children’s
Ensemble who made their debut at the 10AM Mass last
Sunday. Approximately 20 children participated in the
Family Mass; a group that included singers and musicians
(including a talented 4 year old violinist). The presence of
so many young people gave a decidedly upbeat
atmosphere to the Meet and Greet downstairs after Mass
that welcomed many new parishioners to the parish.
We remind you, if you appreciated the participation of so
many children in the Mass, you can encounter them again
at the 10AM Mass on the 3rd Sunday and at the 4PM
Mass on the 1st Saturday of each month.
I want to take this opportunity to update the parish on the
progress of Faith in Our Future Diocesan program.
Parishes across the Diocese have been engaging in a
process of cooperation and collaboration with each other
this past year. Within our cohort, two parishes, St
Elizabeth in Avon and Ascension in Bradley Beach, are
merging—beginning July 1, 2018. The new merged
parish will be called St. Teresa of Calcutta.
A new spirit of cooperation has sprung up among the
parishes of our cohort, and we are communicating and
sharing in a way that is new to our parishes. The Diocese
calls us to move beyond cooperation to collaboration, a
process that involves planning and sharing resources and
programs, and constantly keeping in mind that we are part
of a larger entity than our own individual parishes. In this
regard, the cohort website GatheredAsOne.com is a
positive step in that direction, as is the decision of the
parishes in the cohort to hire a Youth Director who will
coordinate and promote youth ministry in all the parishes
of the cohort (further news later). Over the past two years,
our parish has been collaborating with the other parishes
in the cohort by offering shared ongoing spiritual and
educational programs at St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt, as
well as here in Spring Lake. Currently, Walking with
Purpose is being offered on Wednesdays @ 12:15PM.
(Cf. page 5, for further information). The parishes of the
cohort are planning to celebrate a joint Mass on the Beach
with Bishop O’Connell on August 19, an event that drew a
large crowd last year; more information about this and
other cohort developments later.
One area that has come up for some preliminary
discussion has been the question of aligning and
coordinating Mass schedules.
While this is a discussion that we may be having with
neighboring parishes after the Summer rush, we do need to
take a critical look at our Mass schedule as we move
forward.

FR. MARTIN IS DOING THE NEW
YORK 5 BORO CYCLE, MAY 6, 2018
My good friend and fellow Monaghan man, Fr. John Skinnader, works as a missionary priest in South Sudan. Please visit our parish w e b s i t e , w w w. s tc a th ar ine -stmargaretparish.org on how dire things are in the country, and believe me they are dire. Fr. John works very closely with the Loreto Sisters, who run the local girls High School. They know the only hope these girls have for any kind of future it is through education. Fr. John asked me would it be possible for the people of St. Catharine – St Margaret Parish to sponsor two young girls, Mary and Ageer, to go to college this coming September. The cost for each of the girls is $3000 each. If they don’t get to college, they very likely will be forced into marriage.
To learn more about the girls or for more information, please visit our parish website www.stcatharine-stmargaretparish.org.
I am cycling the NY 5 Borough’s Cycle on May 6th and I am asking you to sponsor me, so I can give every help and opportunity to these two young girls. If you wish to donate, please make the check out to St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, and at the bottom of the check write ‘South Sudan’. If giving cash, please put in an envelope and write ‘South
Sudan’ on it. If you would like to make an online donation, please go to the Parish website and click on ‘Educate South Sudan’ button and follow the prompts.
Thank you for all your support and help! Fr Martin
Catholic Home Missions Appeal

Right now, over 40 percent of
dioceses in the United States are

pastoral work needed in their communities. Your support
of this appeal helps ease the struggle of these dioceses.
Please prayerfully consider how you can support this
appeal. More info can be found at www.usccb.org/home-
missions.

Osteoporosis: A Major Health Concern
On Tuesday, May 15,2018 at 7:30 PM the Parish Health Ministry is presenting an informative program on Osteoporosis in Francis Duffy Hall (Formerly St. Margaret Hall), St. Margaret's Church. Did you know 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures? The goal of the presentation is to increase your awareness of bone health and osteoporosis. Topics include: learning if you are at risk, preventing bone loss, diagnosing osteoporosis, and a "recipe" for bone health.
Our guest speaker will be Andrea Rodgers, DPT. She is a Senior Physical Therapist III who has worked at Meridian Rehab in Neptune for 23 years. Andrea has her clinical doctorate in physical therapy, is a member of the Spring Lake First Aid squad for the past 31 years and is a published author.
In addition to Andréa's presentation, staff from the hospital will be there to do bone density screening. In order to provide adequate staff, they asked if you would call 1-800-560-9990 to register. No fee is required.
If you have any questions, please contact Marion
Mullarkey @ 732-449-8406. Hope to see you there!
WWP Connect Coffee Talk:
Set the World on Fire
We live in a culture that is obsessed with busyness. Each of us wants to use our time in the way that God wants us to. God wants us to see the brokenness of our world and be determined to do something about it. Please join us for a taste of Walking with Purpose and encouragement to choose how we bring about positive change in our world and to see what God can do through us! No experi-ence necessary, just come as you are for lunch and a chance to see what Walking with Purpose is all about!
Wednesday, May 2 at 12:15pm, St. Mark’s, Sea Girt
Walking with Purpose is a women’s Catholic Bible study. Personal study and small group discussions at WWP each week link our everyday challenges with the solutions given to us through the teachings of Christ and the Catho-lic Church.
