• The Paleozoic Era was the first geological age of the Phanerozoic Eon.

• It began about 570 million years ago and ended about 230 million years ago.

• It was characterized by having massive extinctions and marine habitats.

There were 6 main periods

• Those Were:• Cambrian period• Ordivician period• Silurain period• Davonian period• Carboniferus period • Permian period.

Cambrian Period• An « explosion of life » ocurred

• Multi cellular organisms• Organisms developed hard body

parts: Shells and body skeletons• Marine habitats were created

Ordovician Period

• Marine habitats continued evolving • Great diversity of animals: A lot of invertebrates vertebrates began their

evolution

Silurian period444-416 millions years ago.

•Creation of Tropical habitats occurred

• 1st fish with true jaws appeared

Page 8: THE PALEOZOIC ERA By: Andrés Fajardo, Mauricio Buendía, Álvaro Vivas, and Juanita González.

• First multi cellular plants evolved

First animals living on land appeared:

Devonian period416-359 Million Years ago

Vertebrates and invertebrates on the sea

Fishes: with jaws bony skeletons and scales

Plants appeared on dry areas

• First amphibians appeared

• Insects evolved on the land « 1st insects »

Carboniferous Period 359-299 Million years ago.

• A Lot of habitats developed• Amphibians, insects and land plants

adapted more• Vertebrates

Insects

• Insects Plants

• 1st Reptiles evolved from Amphibians

• Mountain building created habitats by the way…..

Permian period359-299 million years ago

• Invertebrates and • vertebrates expanded +++++…..• Reptiles• ancestors

• Modern reptiles mammals

• dinosaurs

• Finally…………………..• Ended 230 millionyears ago• It was a massive extinction---------96%

of ocean species became extinct.

• The shells or coverings of the animals of this era made them fofossilize much more easily.
