In that capacity, he is responsible for guiding and coordinating technical activities across the Department, overseeing its basic research activities, and providing technical advice to the Secretary of Energy. DOE activities are essential to the Administration’s goals of promoting basic science, providing clean and secure energy, and enhancing nuclear security.

Prior to his government appointment, Dr. Koonin was the Chief Scientist for BP, plc. Koonin’s understanding of energy trends and technologies, widely com-municated to the public, underpinned BP’s recent investments in alternative and renewable energy sources, including the Energy Biosciences Institute formed in collaboration with the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Dr. Koonin joined BP in 2004 following a 29-year career at the California Institute of Technology as a Professor of Theoretical Physics. He has published more than 200 scholarly papers and supervised more than 25 PhD theses in such diverse fields as nuclear and many-body theory, nuclear astrophysics, atomic and computational physics, and global environmental science. In a twenty-year teaching career, he educated hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students in advanced physics topics and authored a seminal text on Computational Phys-ics in 1985. Koonin also served as Caltech’s Provost from 1995-2004, helping to hire some 100 of the Institute’s professors and forming initiatives in biology, astronomy, the earth sciences, the social sciences, and information science. He holds an undergraduate degree in Physics from Caltech and a PhD in Theoretical Physics from MIT. He and his wife Laurie have been married for 34 years and have three children, Anna, Alyson, and Benjamin.

Pedro Azagra is currently Chief Development Officer of Iberdrola and a member of the management team. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Energy East, Rochester Gas and Electric, New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, and Iberdrola Portugal. From 2004 to 2008, Azagra was a member of the board of Rokas in Greece. He also is a part-time teacher in the Univer-sidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid (ICADE). Prior to joining Iberdrola, Azagra previously worked for Morgan Stanley in London, in the Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Project Finance division. Curt L. Hébert Jr. joined Entergy Corporation as Executive Vice President, External Affairs on September 1, 2001 after a lengthy career as a government energy regulator at both the federal and state levels. His responsibilities include supervision of the company’s system and federal government relations, system regulatory affairs, external and internal communications, and corporate contri-bution functions. He serves as a member of the Office of Chief Executive and reports to Entergy’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, J. Wayne Leonard.

Prior to becoming an Entergy executive, Hébert served four years in Wash-ington as a presidential appointee to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commis-sion. He was nominated to a Republican seat on FERC by President William J. Clinton in 1997 and was named chairman by President George W. Bush in January, 2001. At 38 years of age, Hébert became the youngest chairman in history of the FERC.

As chairman, he initiated a market monitoring and mitigation plan for whole-sale electricity prices in April of 2001, putting a mechanism in place that rec-ognized individual heat rates and input costs of gas, emission allowances and O&M. This replaced a $150 hard cap and ended the run-up in electricity prices in the west within the very hour the order went into effect. He stepped down from the commission on August 31, 2001 to accept his position with Entergy.

Hébert received a bachelor of science degree from The University of Southern Mississippi and a juris doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law and completed the Reactor Technology Program at MIT.

His efforts helped bring about the US industry’s understanding and adoption of the Platts Market-on-Close price assessment process. Prior to his career at Platts, he worked for various daily newspapers, including American Metal Market, a daily trade newspaper, where he worked as a reporter and editor.

A frequent speaker and moderator at industry conferences, John is also regularly tapped for energy commentary by national and international broadcast and print and online media organizations including CNN, CNBC, ABC, CBS, WSJ, Forbes, and more. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communica-tions from Washington & Lee University.

Since joining BusinessWeek in 1989, Mandel received multiple awards for his work, including being honored as one of the 100 top U.S. business journalists of the 20th century. In 1998 Mandel won the Gerald Loeb Award, the most prestigious prize in business and financial journalism, for his coverage of the New Economy, and in 2002 he received the Economic Journalism Award from the Institute of Political Journalism, given to the writer “who has done the most to shape public opinion by giving the public a better understanding of economic theory and reality.” He was named “Best Economic Journalist” for 2006 by the World Leadership Forum.

Mandel holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University and has written several books, including The Coming Internet Depression (2000) and Rational Exuberance (2004).
