AUGUST 2013 THE ORTHODOX VISION 3

T he 2nd week of July, I had

the opportunity to attend the “Camp of St. Paul.” We’ll

talk later about this wonderful

experience.

We all must take time to renew

ourselves, both psychologically and spiritually. Simply separating ourselves from our daily routines and spending a few quiet moments

alone in prayer, is all it takes to feel spiritually renewed.

Scripture tells us that Jesus would often separate Himself from his daily routine and the attentions of

others in order to pray. The Feast of the Transfiguration, recalling the

time when Jesus took his inner circle of disciples, Peter, John and Iakovos , with him to pray. Luke

records in chapter 9, verses 29-31, “As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothing became as bright as a flash of

lightening. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. “

The Fathers of the Church tell us

that Jesus didn’t change, but the

eyes of the disciples were opened by the Holy Spirit, so that they could see Him as He truly is, not only on special occasions, but at all times:

the source of unapproachable light, shining with the Uncreated Energies of God.

The Church teaches that some

men and women who have

committed their lives to praying to Christ without ceasing in places of

simplicity and stillness have actually experienced visions of Christ in this same state of unending glory. They

are the Holy Hesychasts, who associated with the monasteries of the Mountain of Athos.

As we return to our regular routines, let us remember to take God’s love, hope, justice, and truth

to all those who are searching. Let us come regularly to the mountain that is God’s Kingdom on Earth, the

Church of Christ, so that we can be changed by our encounter with Him and leave here filled with spiritual power to go back down the valley

and share with others the glory of God.

I hope you are all have a blessed and restful summer.

του π.

“God is a shower to the heart burned up with grief; God is a sun to the face deluged with tears.” JOSEPH ROUX

Our Parish by George Mourizakis -Parish Council President

I am sure by now that all of you either have plans to

go, or have already gone on your

summer vacation. We are very busy during the

summer months with various

projects around the Church. There is so much to do in so little time. We are restoring the dome,

painting, cleaning, floor waxing, installing new lighting , and so on.

We are also preparing for the

arrival of a new Preschool in our facilities, Small to Tall Scholars,

who will be ready to roll by September. Please support them by considering bringing your children here. The

director’s name is Kristen. She has many years of experience in child care, and she also has another center in the Greenfield Hills section of Fairfield. By

supporting the school, you are supporting our Church, as

the rental income offsets our

expenses. We are including the financials from this year’s Festival in this issue. Again,

thank you for your support and all the hard work.

Take some time over the summer to think about what you can offer to our

community. It can be anything you have a passion about or is close to your heart. It can be a skill that you like to share, or

an idea that you can make a reality and can be beneficial to our Church. Please take a

moment out of your day to see how you can contribute to our parish. Don’t forget we are

OPEN all summer long. Church doesn’t take a vacation. Before you know it, we will be

celebrating The Dormition of the Theotokos. Come and

join us. I wish everyone a nice and safe summer . Thank you

and God bless.

Jesus Transfigured

on the Mount Mark 9:1-9

A nd He said to them,

"Assuredly, I say to you that there are some

standing here who will not taste

death till they see the kingdom of God present with power."

Now after six days Jesus took

Peter, James, and John, and led

them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His c l o t he s b ec ame s h i n i ng ,

exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. And Elijah

appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter answered and said to

Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"-

because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

And a cloud came and overshadowed them; and a voice

came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son. Hear

Him!" Suddenly, when they had looked around, they saw no one anymore, but only Jesus with

themselves. Now as they came down

f rom t h e moun t a in , H e

commanded them that they should tell no one the things they had seen, till the Son of Man had risen

from the dead. 10 So they kept this word to themselves , questioning what the rising from

the dead meant.

The Transfiguration of our Lord

is commemorated on August 6th.

“While I know myself as a creation of God, I am also obligated to realize and remember that everyone else and everything else are also God's creation.” Maya Angelou

The Dormition of

Our Most Holy

Lady, The Theotokos

I n the icon depicting the Dormi-tion of the Theotokos, the All-Holy Theotokos is on the funer-

al bier, with the Apostles gathered

around to venerate her all-pure body for the last time (Saints Peter and John are near her head and Saints

Paul, Andrew and Simon near her feet). Our Lord Jesus Christ is de-picted taking her spotless soul

(symbolized by the infant in His arms) to Heaven, accompanied by a host of angels. The color of the an-gels is blue which is the color of the

liturgical season for the Theotokos. Candles are burning, and St. Peter is censing in veneration.

Biblical Story— The Holy

Scriptures tell us that when our Lord was dying on the Cross, He saw His mother and His disciple John and

said to the Virgin Mary, "Woman,

behold your son!" and to John, "Behold your mother!" (John 19:25-27). From that hour, the Apostle

took care of the Theotokos in his own home.

Along with the biblical reference

in Acts 2:14 that confirms that the Virgin Mary was with the Holy Apostles on the day of Pentecost, the

tradition of the Church holds that she remained in the home of the Apostle

John in Jerusalem, continuing a min-istry in word and deed.

At the time of her death, the dis-

ciples of our Lord who were preach-ing throughout the world returned to Jerusalem to see the Theotokos. Ex-cept for the Apostle Thomas, all of

them including the Apostle Paul were gathered together at her bed-side. At the moment of her death,

Jesus Christ himself descended and carried her soul into heaven.

Following her repose, the body of

the Theotokos was taken in proces-sion and laid in a tomb near the Gar-den of Gethsemane. When the Apos-tle Thomas arrived three days after

her repose and desired to see her body, the tomb was found to be empty. The bodily assumption of the

Theotokos was confirmed by the message of an angel and by her ap-pearance to the Apostles. Submitted by Vicky Andriotis - source:
