The Heptarchy is a collective name applied to the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of south, east, and central Great Britain during late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, conventionally identified as seven: Northumbria, Mercia, East Anglia, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Wessex.

The Anglo-Saxon kingdoms eventually unified into the Kingdom of England.

Photo of the Sutton Hoo helmet temporarily located in room 1 of the British Museum.

Based on a Roman parade-helmet design, it has decorations similar to those found in contemporary Swedish helmets found at Old Uppsala.

Many monasteries in the north were destroyed, and with them any records of the raids.
