InspirationFor this project, I was inspired by the artwork of Tom Whalen; specif-ically, his excellent composition design and his use of color. With each poster he creates, Whalen is able to use multiple elements from a story to create a non-cluttered and interesting composition. Whalen sticks with a simple color palette for each character and element. By using simple dark and light colors he is able to achieve great depth and dimensionality with his vectors, no complicated shading/blending necessary. His use of composition and color creates a beautiful piece of work that is very interesting and fun to look at.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”Of the three cases I made, this case is the one I first began to design. I decided that once I chose a final composition for this case, then I would be able to mimic the same design using different elements for the remaining two cases. I began by deciding which characters I wanted to represent the movie on the cover. I watched the 1964 classic multiple times as well as took the original DVD cases into ac-count before deciding which characters I wanted to use. Most of my initial ideas revolved around making Rudolph the center of attention for the case, while also highlighting the secondary characters along with an environment.

Christmas has been cancelled! Or, at least it will be if Santa Claus can’t find a way to guide his sleigh through a fierce blizzard. Fortu-nately for him, there’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! Shunned by the other reindeer because of his glowing nose, Rudolph becomes a hero when he guides Santa through the storm and enables him to deliver Christmas presents to all. This digitally re-mastered version of the family classic features the renowned original musical score known the world over.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”For the final design, I decided to go with a mountainous background, very much like the environment the movie is set in. Instead of split-ting the primary and secondary characters like Tom Whalen does in his works with obvious boarders, I decided I wanted to create a continuous composition, one each character could fit comfortably in. I used a serif type called Euphorigenic-Regular because I loved how simple and compact it was. I did not want to use a script font be-cause I did not want the image to get too busy, and most sans serif fonts I felt did not have enough weight to hold their own against the background. The colors were chosen based on the colors of the characters in the original 1964 claymation. I thought using pink for the shadow of the snow complemented the blue of the mountains.

“The Year Without A Santa Claus”Mimicking the same composition as Rudolph, to design this case I began by deciding which characters I wanted to represent the movie on the cover. I watched the 1974 classic multiple times as well as took the original DVD cases into account before deciding which characters I wanted to use. Similar to Rudolph, I went through different iterations of ways to separate the main characters (Jingle, Jangle and Vixen) from the secondary characters. However, this story includes brothers who oppose one another (the Miser Brothers), so I wanted to portray that opposition on the cover.

“The Year Without A Santa Claus”For the final design, I decided to go with a background that split the two towns the movie is set in to complement the opposing tension created by the Miser Brothers in the movie. I used the same serif type as I used for the “Rudolph” case (Euphorigenic-Regular). I did this because I wanted to keep the series similar, so to do this I used the same font and composition for each case. The colors were cho-sen based on the opposing relationship between the Miser Brothers. The characters and environment at the North Pole are more blue to show Snow Miser’s territory, and the characters and environment at Southtown U.S.A. are more orange to show Heat Miser’s domain.

“Frosty the Snowman”Mimicking the same composition as Rudolph, to design this case I began by deciding which characters I wanted to represent the movie on the cover. I watched the 1970 classic multiple times as well as took the original DVD cases into account before deciding which characters I wanted to use. Similar to Rudolph, I went through differ-ent iterations of ways to separate the main character (Frosty) from the secondary characters. However, once I found a composition I liked with “Rudolph” I was able to place the characters from “Frosty” into similar positions and keep the series similar to one another.

“Frosty the Snowman”For the final design, I decided to use the snowy environment that the children and Frosty spend a majority of their time playing in for the background. I used the same serif type as I used for the “Rudolph” and “The Year Without A Santa Claus” case (Euphorigen-ic-Regular). I did this because I wanted to keep the series similar, so to do this I used the same font and composition for each case. The colors were chosen based on the colors of the characters in the original 1970 animation. For the color on this case, I decided to use more pink. If you look at each DVD case, you’ll notice “Rudolph” is more blue, “The Year Without A Santa Claus” is split moving from blue to an orange pink, and “Frosty” is pink. I did this to create a gra-dient within the DVD box, so each case plays off of the other.

“The Original Christmas Classics Box Set”In order to design this box set, I looked at multiple past box sets to see how each grouped the different characters from each movie. I decided to design a set where the characters fit comfortably in an environment together, as opposed to just being clumped together.

“The Original Christmas Classics Box Set”For the final design, I decided to combine the main characters from each movie into the mountain environment from the “Rudolph” case. I used the same back cover idea that I used for each of the cases in order to make the text legible on the background. I used the same font on the box set as I used throughout each case (Euph-origenic-Regular). For the colors, I used a combination of all of the colors used on each of the separate cases.
