The One Show is the only programme that combines high quality specialist factual films with
entertaining high profile guests from the world of film, TV and theatre.
In ten years The One Show has broadcast around 9,000 films focusing on the natural, historical and
scientific wonders of the UK and the life and times of its inhabitants. Topics include natural history,
history, science, medicine, current and consumer affairs, music and arts.
On any given night viewers might learn why the tallest tower on the south coast doesn't sway in the
wind, experience a young boy hearing for the first time, discover killer whales off the Scottish coast as
well as hearing Idris Elba's or Taylor Swift's reaction to it all.
The One Show’s tone is positive and celebratory, aiming to surprise and entertain viewers after an hour
of news and local news but it is not afraid to take on serious and sometimes controversial issues.
The One Show on location across the UK
The One Show is the programme that aims to explore every corner of the UK and has taken its famous
green sofas on the road for special shows in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, the Lizard Peninsula,
Newcastle/Gateshead, Belfast, Hebden Bridge, Harrogate, Weston Super Mare and Birmingham to
name just a few.
In 2012 the show came live from Buckingham Palace where presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones, both
successful Strictly Come Dancing contestants, waltzed through the corridors. When Prince Harry
wanted to launch tickets for The Invictus Games he turned to The One Show and it was alongside the
Show's temporary set in Cornwall that the plane carrying the Olympic Torch landed in 2012.

Alex Jones and Matt Baker interview
What do you think is the enduring appeal of The One Show?
Alex Jones: I think there are many things. One, it reflects the day that Britons have had. Second, it ends
the day for young people and starts the evening for grown-ups. It covers such a vast array of topics
sometimes in one programme. Nothing lasts any more than three or four minutes – if you don’t like this
subject you may well like the next.
Matt Baker: It just sums up absolutely the perfect over-the-garden-wall conversation – the kind of
conversation you’d have in a pub or some other community place. You’re flitting around all sorts of
different subjects. You’re discussing them and then you move on. And to me, that’s how we in Britain
BBC Media Centre: Media Pack – The One Show 10th Anniversary – August 2016

Page - 7
like to have our conversations with people that we meet in our communities. So, we’re fizzing about
one subject for a moment, then we’re fizzing about something completely different. Then someone else
comes over and says "have you heard about this?”
AJ: … and I think because of that when there’s a level of glamour injected into it then it gets really
exciting. Celebrities will come on and we’ll sometimes end up discussing really important things.
Everyone gets involved in every topic.
Who are your most memorable celebrity guests?
AJ: Many for different reasons really. Hillary Clinton is probably up there as one of the guests we’ve
really enjoyed having on the show.
MB: It was an extraordinary day. We’d had a leak in the studio so couldn’t broadcast from there. We
had to go to old Broadcasting House. Obviously everyone had to be security checked. We didn’t find
out until late in the day. So we moved The One Show sofa to the reception of old Broadcasting House.
We actually saw Hilary walk across the reception behind us while we were on air. It’s not often that you
get star-struck and that’s a lot to do with the show. Because we flit around subjects us as presenters are
always in a position where we have to make sure the guest is at ease. And yet suddenly, Hillary Clinton
walks in. It was a special moment.
AJ: She was just lovely. Guests like her surprise you. Kevin Spacey – he brought in Welsh Cakes. That
was a nice gesture.
MB: Every single person hasn’t just come on the show to talk about their project. They’ve all been
involved in some way shape or form in what’s been happening in Britain that day. In that way we’re an
extension of the front room at home. We want them to feel as big a part of the show as the guests. As
soon as you’ve got a Hollywood guest talking about things that people at home care about, that’s when
the show really works. It’s perfect.

Page - 8
AJ: That’s when the show is really cohesive. Sometimes are guests will drop their guard. That’s when you
can shock them with questions about the mundane. But they’re actually quite pleased to be asked.
But that’s something about you, isn’t it? You have the ability to cut-through and
surprise people with stuff like that. Are you aware of that?
AJ: Not really, no. Because it’s live, we don’t really have time. Whether it’s someone who’s made a
special film about an illness, or a family member, or it’s someone like Sir Elton John, and by treating
everyone the same.
How would you describe the One Show?
MB: An eclectic mix of everything which is typically British. It’s eccentric. That’s what I love about it.
Everything is possible. We can do whatever we want. We don’t shy away from ideas that people
wouldn’t normally consider.
AJ: Or controversial sometimes.
MB: I like to give people a starting point with a subject. A guest will share something unexpected during
a two or three minute piece and then the next thing you know someone has gone off, found out more
about that subject and dedicated their life to it. That’s something I learnt back in the day on Blue Peter.
The number of people I’ve met since who’ve said to me “I’m doing what I do today because of
something I saw on Blue Peter.” For me, fundamentally, that’s what the One Show is really. It’s a friend
that will introduce you to things so you can go off and explore it yourself.
Do you both feed into production?
AJ: Absolutely. Nobody would want to be a puppet. We come in at 2.30pm. We sit down with the
editor and the producers and talk through the show. Everyone feeds into it. By the time we sit down for
the show at 7.00pm the show could be entirely different from what had been discussed at the meeting.

Page - 9
That’s the joy of it.
MB: All we can do is set out a load of things we think might work with the person we’re interviewing
that night. We’ll decide when we’re sitting there what’s working and what doesn’t. We’ll change our line
of questioning according to how they respond. You’ve got to be fluid like that.
AJ: There has to be spontaneity. That’s why we do it live. You never know what will happen.
That leads us seamlessly on to the next question. What’s been the hairiest moment
on The One Show?
MB: We’ve had lots of animals going to the toilet on us ….
AJ: Do you remember Matt when Sandi Toksvig was on and that massive vulture came to the studio?
MB: Actually yes, that was pretty hairy. She jumped a mile. Then there was that time when David
Cassidy who had his face nearly bitten off by a llama. He was kissing the llama saying “Oh aren’t you
lovely.” We looked on in horror telling, “No! Don’t do that! Don’t do that!” The llama lurched at his face
– he got out of the way just in time.
Who have you enjoyed interviewing the most?
MB: I liked Dolly Parton very much. Sparkly and warm. She chose my shirt for the broadcast. Alex
watched her put her make up on. Very special having her around. It’s always nice when Lionel Richie is
on, Billy Ocean too.
AJ: We once sang with Stevie Wonder. That was amazing. Do you remember Matt when we sang with
Michael Buble?
They’d set up a stage outside at the White City studio. Michael Buble invites us to sing.

Page - 10
MB: He gets us on stage and the awful thing was that we didn’t know the words – Love, Love, Love. He
passes us the microphone for the verse but of course we didn’t know what the words were.
Alex, describe Matt
AJ: He’s an all-rounder, very trustworthy, very reliable. Somebody you’d want as your best friend. A
brilliant, brilliant person to work with.
Matt, Describe Alex
MB: Alex will always find the good in you. She absolutely will. She will always want to look at the
brighter side of life. She’ll try and help in any way she can.
Are you aware of the chemistry between you?
AJ: Oh yes. We have a laugh. You come to work and you know you’re going to have a good time. But
Matt and I would never be going to a premiere or a party after work. We’re just not like that at all.
What is the best thing about working with one another?
AJ: He couldn’t be a steadier ship. You need that when you broadcast everyday live. He’s a consummate
professional.
MB: I would say the feeling of happiness you experience whenever you work with her. And we trust
one another. We know where each other is going with stuff. We fill in each other’s blanks.
What’s the best thing about The One Show audience?
MB: Our audience is so incredibly loyal they are. We notice it when we ask for their help.

Page - 11
AJ: Totally. The other day, we asked them to recreate a picture of Andy Murray in the ice bath with the
Wimbledon trophy. Within half an hour they were sending their pictures in. It was amazing.
MB: The amount of money that they Rickshaw Challenge has raised for Sport Relief is amazing. You’re
giving an honest true vision of what is going on – youngsters putting themselves on the line. That’s so
clear when you see that on telly. People respond to that and give money.
AJ: The momentum has increased over the years too.
MB: It’s a support and respect thing which our viewers have for what we do on the show. It’s also about
kickstarting the evening schedule. It’s everyone together – there are not many shows like it anymore.
The One Show is a classic magazine show in that respect.

The One Show Reporting Family
The One Show has a family of returning presenters who report on stories from across the UK. Here
some give their thoughts on the Show.
Images of moments from these interviews are available from BBC Pictures website.
Dan Snow
What was your most memorable moment on the show?
Mr T was the studio guest and it emerged that he watched my shows in America and I nearly died of
happiness.
Who were you most star struck by?
I was star struck by Mr T and Dolly Parton who totally won me over. I was reduced to a stammering
wreck when Adrian Chiles said she'd take me back to Tennessee.
What have been your best reports?
Climbing through a massive underground Titan cave in Derbyshire was great, but I'm proudest of
explaining the First World War on Blackpool beach.
I also did bomb disposal on a beach during a film about unexploded bombs and nearly jumped out of
my skin!
What is the best One Show film you appeared in and why?
There’s been so many – but crawling down a Roman sewer in York full of Roman poo for the pilot of
The One Show a decade ago is up there.
Going in the RAF typhoon in 2008 for the 90th anniversary of the RAF was amazing.
So was meeting World War Two swordfish veteran Jock Moffat on an aircraft carrier - the man who
sank the Bismarck!

Angellica Bell
Tell us about your time on The One Show?
Every moment has been great and I've met some amazing, inspiring and just down right lovely people
who've been so generous with their stories or welcomed me into their homes. It’s the best job in TV
and I love the fact I've been part of the team from the start!
What has been your most memorable appearance on The One Show?
I went to Sheffield and made a film with my Grandad. It was based at the Forgemasters Steel Works
where he was an apprentice and worked for many years. It was great for him to see me work and be
part of what I do. As a family we will have that as a memory forever.
What has been your most bizarre moment?
I was sat with Sir Ben Kingsley in a mock Easter garden with bunnies running around our feet. He leaned
over and asked me what on earth we were doing. I replied that we both should just go with it and smile.
We had to laugh, The One Show can be random but that's why we love it!
What is the biggest challenge The One Show has thrown at you?
It has to be Hell on High Seas for Sport Relief which I was part of earlier this year. I hate water and
hadn't started swimming lessons when I embarked on the challenge. We were tired, wet and cold but it
was a great experience and I loved hanging out with Alex.
Gyles Brandreth
Tell us about your time on the One Show?
I've made more than 500 films in ten years across the whole of the UK. That's the joy of The One
Show – it has shown me what an amazing country we live in.
Any standout celebrities?
When I was a little boy I loved the 1952 film Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds -
so I was thrilled to find myself sitting on the sofa next to her nearly 60 years later.

Page - 14
What do you love most about the show?
It’s been wonderful to reports on such different subjects - from deeply moving stories about the horrors
of the First World War to attempting to recreate the stunts in the Carry on Films. All human life is
there and that's why being a reporter on The One Show is such a privilege.
What have been your highlights during your ten years on the One Show?
Co-hosting with Alex on a Friday; taking Christine Bleakely to have lunch with David Cameron at the
House of Commons; and recording what turned out to be his last TV interview with the great diarist
and parliamentarian, Tony Benn.
Matt Allwright
What has been your most memorable moment reporting or appearing on The One Show?
Playing The Chain with Mick Fleetwood. He told me not to f*** it up.
The biggest star you’ve ever sat next to on The One Show sofa? Have you ever been star struck?
Will Smith was on. He was lovely though and didn't make you feel like he was anything other than a
very friendly guy. Sigourney Weaver was incredible - I think she might actually be from space.
The most bizarre thing you’ve ever seen on the show or been a part of?
That Anita Rani's radishes achieved a higher placing than my cupcakes during a village special still makes
the mind boggle. Poor show, especially as I had travelled to West Wales to get cupcake lessons.
What would you say really sums up your One Show experiences?
Nothing, not money nor privilege nor high office can give you the experiences that reporting on The
One Show offers. Some of my longest, happiest days have been spent working on the Show.
Lucy Siegle

Page - 15
What has been your most memorable moment on The One Show?
Jumping off a 10 metre diving board for Children in Need. Whenever I go past that leisure centre in
Plymouth I get awful flash backs. It actually made my fear of heights worse.
What was the best film you appeared in and why?
A total stand out was when we had Whoopi Goldberg coming on for Sister Act in the West End and
we went to interview the sisters at the Convent of Poor Clare, Arundel, who allowed the cameras in
because they loved the film and wanted to record a message for Whoopi!
The mother superior was suffering from a form of jaw cancer (she didn't know this) but one of our
viewers - a consultant in Scotland - is an expert in this type of cancer, saw her and contacted the show.
She was subsequently treated, recovered really well and we went back to film with her again.
Any funny/ memorable stories from being on a shoot with our crew?
The most frightening and difficult shoot I've ever done was hovercraft racing. The last thing the
professional said to me before I did a time trial was “be careful not to break your collar bone”. I
screamed the entire way around.
Have you ever been star struck?
Yes, many times. Julie Walters was my favourite of all time. She is that rare mix of sparkly and
completely humble. You also end up chatting in between films with people like Lionel Richie. It's like,
OMG!
What is the most bizarre thing you’ve ever seen on the show or been a part of?
Definitely the Aaron Paul (Jesse from Breaking Bad) episode last year. He was among chickens in the
studio which was gloriously surreal!
Anita Rani

Tell us about your time on the One Show?
The One Show has been the backdrop to my entire TV career and the green sofa is like my second
home. In the eight years I have been on the show I have worked on more than 500 stories.
Have you ever been star struck?
From meeting Benedict Cumberbatch to Bette Midler and my hero Morrissey I have been star struck on
a few occasions, but some of the most memorable moments have involved the public.
Tell us more about that?
It is such a privilege to be invited into people’s homes and I’ve had so many cups of tea with members
of the British public and heard so many amazing stories. These have included many sad ones, like the
woman I met at her son’s grave, who had committed suicide as he couldn’t pay back a loan shark.
Most bizarre thing you’ve done on the show?
On Christmas 2014 I was in a town centre playing charades with Lionel Blair. Only on The One Show!
Once we wanted to test batteries, but in true One Show fashion, we went to a university to test them
out, and took a load of toy puppies… they were still barking in the back of the car on the way back to
London.
Nadiya Hussain
What sums up your One Show experience?
I never realised how much work goes into creating these little clips that can capture a story in a few
minutes. And the days I’ve spent filming with The One Show have allowed me to meet such talented,
skilled and extraordinary people.
What has been your most memorable moment on The One Show?
Going back to my old school and reporting at my old high school. The sea of bottle green uniform
brought it all back to me.

What is the best film you appeared in and why?
Spending the day with chef Tom Kitchen and eating the best smoked salmon – ever!
Who’s the biggest star you’ve ever sat next to on The One Show sofa? Have you ever been star struck?
I was slightly giddy to meet Danny Dyer. But it was even better because it made my sisters so jealous.
So much so I got a flurry of texts with all three sisters saying they officially hate me!
Phil Tufnell
What has been you most memorable moment reporting or appearing on The One Show?
Meeting art historian Sister Wendy! I loved the relationship we struck up…
What is the best film you appeared in and why?
Oh crikey…I’ve done them for ten years… one of the ones with Sister Wendy where we wandered
around a small church down in Sussex was great. We had a great time making animal noises!
Who’s the biggest star you’ve ever sat next to on The One Show sofa? Have you ever been star struck?
Interviewing Tony Curtis – he was a legend. I told my Dad I was going to interview him and he said “He
was one of the top boys, he was so handsome, he was my hero”.
What is the most bizarre thing you’ve ever seen on the show or been a part of?
I was once asked to teach Mad Men’s John Hamm to bowl and play cricket.
Mike Dilger
What is the best film you appeared in and why?
Too many to mention but the Barnacle Geese up on the Solway Firth stands out as an astonishing film
which was considered the best One Show film of 2011, despite being up against some stiff competition!
Have you any memorable stories from being on a shoot?
I have been filmed either falling asleep, or fast asleep on three separate shoots while waiting for wildlife
on The One Show. I’ve also been filmed throwing up over the side of a boat in very rough seas off the
Isle of Scilly - which I obviously wasn’t too pleased about!

Page - 18
Have you ever been star struck?
The most charismatic was Bette Midler, the funniest was Frank Skinner and the most charming was
Alison Steadman.
I also met Larry Hagman aka J.R Ewing on the sofa and on meeting him beforehand in the Green Room
accidentally took his fist when it was offered as a fist pump, and shook it handshake style. What
an embarrassment!
What is the most bizarre thing you’ve ever seen on the show or been a part of?
I Broke the Guinness World Record for the most number of snails on my face on The One Show in
2009 and was presented the certificate by Jamie Oliver in the studio. It has since been broken and I
would like the record back!
Christine Walkden
Please highlight your most memorable moment reporting or appearing on The One Show.
Broadcasting from Buckingham Palace where we reported on the Queen’s famous garden parties and
from the garden in Number 10 Downing Street.
What is the best One Show film you appeared in and why?
In a celebrity gardens special cricketer Dickie Bird told me, whilst welling up with tears, that he’s only
had one regret his whole life - I thought it was TV Gold.
I also enjoyed talking to Jilly Copper about her dogs’ grave, it was so obvious the special relationship she
had with them. There was also great chemistry between myself Dame Vera Lynn when I interviewed
her about what her garden and what planting roses there meant to her.
What would you say really sums up your One Show experience?
Diverse, interesting, and it has made me realise it’s not just gardening that I can report on.
