The International Olympic Committee has
sprung to the defence of China’s teenage
swim sensation Ye Shiwen, saying she passed a
drug test after her world record win in the 400
medley. IOC spokesman Mark Adams said it is
“very sad” if great performances cannot be
applauded. The 16 year old shattered the
world record in getting her gold on Saturday.
There has been speculation about how she
swam so fast.
Wood the coach of Ye said that the Chinese,
especially the women, keep their weight down and that is the “whole secret” to their success.
They come to the academy with their own chefs and shop the food in Brisbane’s Chinatown. Ye’s
power to weight ratio is particularly good, and that helps to explain how she was able to rip
through the last 50 of her 400 IM in 28.93 seconds, compared with Lochte’s 29.10. That gender-
defying feat and her world record of four minutes, 28.43 seconds, more than any other Chinese
achievement so far in London’s Aquatics Centre, set tongues wagging.
Opening ceremony
The London 2012 Olympic Games
Opening Ceremony took place at 9pm
on 27 July 2012. The Ceremony will
provide an opportunity for the world
to view the artistic expression of the
Artistic Director (Danny Boyle) and his
team, and the culture of the Host City
and the UK. Titled 'Isles of Wonder',
the Ceremony welcomed the finest
athletes from more than 200 nations
for the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, marking an
historic third time the capital has hosted the world’s biggest
and most important sporting event.
The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and
priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport,
inspiration, youth and urban transformation. It was a
Ceremony 'for everyone' and celebrated contributions the UK
has made to the world through innovation and revolution,
as well as the creativity and exuberance of British people.
The spectacular finale of the event saw the Olympic
Cauldron, formed of 205 copper petals representing the
competing nations coming together in London for the Games,
ignited by seven young Torchbearers nominated by Britain’s
past and present Olympic and sporting greats.
The Closing Ceremony
The Closing Ceremony celebrates the achievements of athletes at the London 2012 Olympic Games, and includes a
Handover from one Host City
to the next. In 2012, London
will hand over to Rio de
Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic
Games. The Closing
Ceremony also features the
extinguishing of the Olympic
Flame, signaling the end of
the Games. The Closing
Ceremony of the Olympic
Games will be titled ‘A
Symphony of British Music’,
to celebrate the fact that music has been one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports over the last 50 years. The
worldwide broadcast of the Ceremony will start at 9pm and feature more than 4,100 performers, including 3,500
adult volunteers and 380 schoolchildren from the six east London Host Boroughs. Organizers worked with some
of the country’s most globally successful musicians, along with some of the industry’s stars of tomorrow. The
London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has been appointed to record the soundtracks for the Opening and Closing
Ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympics Games.
Schedule and Results
Did you know that…?
The medal gold was designed especially for each Games, these are what every athlete strives to win.
The medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games will be awarded during a total of 302 Victory Ceremonies,
taking places at venues across the UK. This have been designed by David Watkins, an established artist in
the field of decorative art, and are in production at the Royal Mint headquarters in Llantrisant, South
Wales. The Olympic medals’ circular form is a metaphor for the world. The front of the medal always
depicts the same imagery at the Summer Games – the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the
depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the Host City. The precious ore for the medals has been supplied by
London 2012 sponsor Rio Tinto and was mined at Kennecott Utah Copper Mine near Salt Lake City in
America, as well as from the Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia. For the small amount of non-precious
elements that make up the bronze medals, the zinc was sourced from a mine in Australia as well as from
recycled stock, while the tin originates from a mine in Cornwall.
Usain Bolt Is a Jamaican sprinter widely regarded as the fastest person ever, he set the world record in the 4×100 meters relay. He is the reigning Olympic champion in these three events, the first man ever to win 6 Olympic gold medals in sprinting, and a five-time World champion. Also the first to achieve a "double" by winning 100 m and 200 m titles at consecutive Olympics (2008 and 2012), and topped this through the first "double triple" (including 4x100m relays).
His achievements in sprinting have earned him the media nickname "Lightning Bolt", and awards including the IAAF World Athlete of the Year, Track & Field Athlete of the Year, and Laureus Sportsman of the Year (twice). He is the highest paid athlete ever in track and field. He has been called the world’s most marketable athlete and the greatest athlete ever.
He started sprinting during his days at William Knibb Memorial High School in Trelawny, in Jamaica. He played cricket for his school as his height made him a natural fast bowler. The cricket coach recognized he was also quick on his feet and suggested he try sprinting. One of his Ambitions is to become a legend.
The Most influential person in his career is his coach Glen Mills. Bolt said: "He is like a father figure to me", "He has never done me any wrong and he has always made the right decisions. He is a guiding light and he has shown me the way to improve myself both as a person and as an athlete." He has been in 38 competitions, he won 8 silver medals and the rest are gold.
Phelps signs off in typical style
The 27 year old started his Olympic Swimming career as a 15 year
old in Sydney in 2000, where the youngster was fifth in the 200m
Butterfly.
Then in Athens four years later six gold and two bronze medals, before his historic eight gold medals in Beijing in 2008.
His Games in London didn’t start so well with fourth place in the 400m Individual Medley, his worst result since Sydney; and he was shocked into second by Chad le Clos in the 200m Butterfly.
However, the Baltimore swimmer won the 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley - where he outgunned team mate Ryan Lochte, as well as taking the titles in the 4 x 200m Freestyle and Medley Relay
and silver in the 4 x 100m Freestyle.
After all of his achievements, Phelps now intends to travel and remain heavily involved with his Swimming foundation.
We were lucky to interview that great athlete about of how he
was feeling after his final swim, Phelps said: 'It's hard to put into
words right now. I did everything I wanted to and finished my
career how I wanted to. I've always said that I don't care what
anybody else says, if I can say that about my career that's all
that matters.'
The end of Swimming in the pool saw the exit of arguably the
greatest Olympian in history as Michael Phelps bowed out of the sport having collected 18 gold medals and 22 overall.
Michael Phelps was presented with a FINA lifetime achievement award at London 2012.
His departure leaves a hole in us, we have to say good bye to a big
one, but when we heard about Michael Phelps we can say that we met
the best of all time.
Douglas is now the women's All-Around
Gabrielle Douglas was locked in a head to head battle with Russia's
Viktoria Komova but she edged her opponent into silver medal
position with a total of 62.232, with Aliya Mustafina claiming bronze.
Douglas rocketed into an early lead on Vault thanks to her 15.966
scoring Amanar.
She showed why she was nicknamed 'The Flying Squirrel' on the
Uneven Bars as she posted a strong score, beaten only by her two
Russian opponents, Komova and Mustafina.
Mustafina then saw her hopes of
gold crumble after she fell off the
Uneven Bars as Douglas shone,
retaking the lead from Komova
with only the Floor remaining.
Douglas produced a fantastic Floor performance to claim her
second gold of the Games after helping USA win the Team
final with a crowd pleasing 15.033 routine
It was enough to claim the title ahead of Komova, the last
gymnast to compete.
We had the opportunity to speak with Gaby Douglas about how she wanted to show for all the
people in the All around and she said: 'I just wanted to go out there and show everyone what I
was capable of.
No doubt that this is the beginning of a great career for Gaby Douglas, at just 16 years old and is
Olympic champion, is certainly a revelation for the U.S. gymnastics team.
Outstanding Athetes.
Ruta Meilutyte has become Olympic Games champion at the age of 15
by claiming Lithuania's first Swimming medal with victory in the 100m
Breaststroke.
While the youngster's achievement was the highlight of the night for the
crowd, who were clearly moved by what she had done, it was a
thrilling night at the Aquatics Centre.
Another one is the youngest Missy Franklyn, her nickname is Missy “The
Missile”. She only has 17 years old, and is an Olympic champion.
Her best style is backstroke, in which 100 and 200 were gold to this
young American, it should be emphasized that in the 200 back world
record got, also won gold in the 4x200 freestyle relay and 4x100
combined and bronze in the 4x100 relay freestyle.
Chad le Clos, he did what no one thought, he defeated the star of the current
swimming, Michael Phelps at the 100m Butterfly. No doubt that he showed that
with hard work and dedication, you can beat the big one.
