Shana, the oldest of three children, was a member of Texas Junior Hereford Association and was Texas Hereford Queen in 1979. To this day, Shana’s family finds a great deal of pride in this accomplishment. Shana and her family were thrilled when Shana crowned her sister Texas Hereford Queen in 1980. Shana’s brother also served as the group’s president for a year.

Shana and her family raised cattle, and she and her two siblings showed Hereford cattle throughout Texas. Shana was honored to be at the major shows to represent the Hereford Industry, performing duties such as handing out trophies.

Shana had a warm heart and many friends — friends who often made the drive to Shana’s family’s house in the country in Dalhart. She could be shy, but when she stepped out of the house, it was like she was stepping out of Vogue magazine. That’s one reason Shana was voted most beautiful in high school. Shana was easy to get along with and loved baking and dancing. Shana loved going to concerts and being outside — especially in parks. She was fun-loving, always joking and loving life.

Survivors include a daughter, Ashlee Glock; her parents, Buzz and Nell Summerour of Dalhart; a sister, Shelly Summerour of Dallas; a brother, Berry and wife Jennifer Summerour of Houston; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. ★

6 TEXAS HEREFORD • March 2012

Our “Hats Off to Herefords” sale is set for May 5 and we have a great

consignment. Our second futurity sale has attracted a lot of attention. I solicit every member to attend this event and hopefully find something you can take home to help your own herd, or bring a friend or neighbor that can benefit from the consignments. The futurity sale committee has done a terrific job of getting consignments as well as sponsors for the $9000 in premiums to go back to

the youth that purchase these heifers. In addition to this, the Hereford heifers are eligible to come to the open show in Fort Worth and compete for the high placing heifer scholarship which now amounts to $5000 for the high placing and $2500 for the second high placing heifer. The youth must be a member of TJHA to be eligible.

May is an exciting month. A few have been blessed with rain and moisture to show signs of spring. Calving should be almost finished and the sight of newborn

to three month old calves is as good as it gets in the ranching business. May is national beef month when grocery chains and food suppliers feature beef in their advertising. Mothers Day in May and Fathers Day in June should be a must to feature beef in everyone’s menu. The CHB office assures me we can find CHB in Texas, but it is still more of a challenge than it should be. We want to hear from you in the country when you find it.

The demand for top quality Herefords continues to be strong. Our sales reported in this issue reflect a growing demand for quality Hereford cattle. Our inquiries for cattle to buy have been good. These come from both phone and internet. Our “for sale” listings have been extremely popular and resulted in many sales. Please help us and yourself by keeping these listings current. We cannot help you sell your stock unless you tell us it is for sale.

Our juniors are busy preparing for another great state show sponsored jointly with TJPHA. As an advisor I can safely say that this event could not happen without the support of the Hereford breeders around the entire state. The youth are most appreciative and extend an invitation to attend and watch not only a tremendous cattle show, but their participation in other educational and fun events.

Last month I challenged every member to sign up a new member. We have seen a few come in. I issue the same challenge this month but need you to get them to us before the end of May to be included in the summer June/July issue. We also need your ad in this popular promotional issue.

As time marches on, so do deadlines for many projects sponsored by THA. Now is the time to set aside bulls and females for the THA Fall Classic sale, select a pen of heifers for the Replacement Female Sale, an entry for Cowtown Select Sale, and cattle to fit and show at the National Hereford Show. We are busy putting together the summer membership directory issue of our publication. Remember that the information that is printed in the herd listing part of this issue is also posted on our web site and can be viewed by anyone at anytime. Phone numbers, addresses and current herd information have never been more important. Please help yourself by making sure your information is correct. Advertising is also a big part of this issue. It is an opportunity for you to highlight your operation for a minimal expense. Results might surprise you. “Advertising does not cost-IT PAYS.” ★

TJHANEWS

Howdy y’all!

It’s that time of year again; the time when kids (and teachers) are looking forward to the end of the school and all the summer activities. For Hereford kids in Texas, that means that the Texas Junior Hereford Show is quickly approaching. Yeah, that’s right, state show is only weeks away and it’s time to make your plans and get your entries in. It will once again be held in Belton, Texas. The dates are June 20th through the 23rd. It promises to be a good time for all, a time see old friends and even make some new ones!

This year’s state show rules, schedule, entry form, etc. will posted on the Texas Hereford website and, also, in the magazine. The Texas Polled Hereford newsletter will also have them listed. Entries are to be submitted online by May 15, 2012.

There are a few changes this year

“ Livin’ the Good Life with Herefords ”

Ashley Cline, TJHA secretary

so I want to let you know in advance so you can make those adjustments. This year you can pre-enter for the Team Marketing Contest, so

That means you can get together a team and work on your presentation before you get to the show. Entries will still be taken at the show and you will be assigned a team. The livestock judging contest this year will be held at the show grounds on Friday, the 22nd, morning with the Bred and Owned heifer show and steer show to follow at noon. This year there will also be a futurity show to showcase the heifers that were purchased last year during the sale. This will be held during the Owned show on Saturday, the 23rd.

There are still all the same contests as before. So come prepared to enter team fitting, quiz bowl, showmanship, poster, photography, public speaking, etc. There is something for everyone, no matter what age division you are.

Also, if you haven’t already signed up for a committee, please contact Logan Cline, TJHA president, or Ashley Radde, TJPHA president to find our where they need help. Both associations’ board of directors will arrive early so that they can be ready to help all of the other exhibitors as they begin arriving at 9 a.m. on June

20th. Check in will begin on June 20th at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. so please plan accordingly. Original registration certificates must be present at check-in. That is also when you will need to enter any contest that you want to participate in. T-shirts will be handed out at check-in. ALL exhibitors MUST wear their state show t-shirt in the showmanship ring on Thursday.

Don’t forget your swimming suits or your dancin’ boots! We will head to the Summer Fun Water Park for swimming and pizza on Wednesday evening. Then on Thursday after dinner, there will be a dance. Once again we are having the Calcutta planned by Mrs. Claudia Humphries so be prepared for more family fun this year!

Sullivan Show Supply will put on a Stock Show U demonstration late Wednesday afternoon. Their supply trailer will be set up at the show so if you forget something or need new supplies, they will be there to help you.

If you see a sponsor, don’t forget to take that opportunity to tell them how much we appreciate their time and donations!

See y’all in Belton where we will be “Livin’ the Good Life with Herefords” ★

it’s State Show Time!

I am Hannah Schneider, and I am representing you this year as your

Texas Junior Hereford Association Reporter and Sweetheart. As my term is nearing the end, I am grateful for all the relationships and experiences that have helped me to grow this past year. Every show, I have met a new group of people, and they will probably become lifelong friends.

I look forward to seeing my extended Hereford families at the State Show in Belton, June 20-23. Looking back, I can’t believe this will be my 8th State Show.

This past year was another exciting show season. My heifer, Bella, did very well again this year. We won several high placing ribbons, and showmanship awards. There is nothing like the feeling of finally

being in the show ring. It’s a new learning experience every time I step foot into the show ring. I have had several people tell me that I have really become more outgoing since this experience; it has forced me to become more involved and to meet new people. One of the highlights at the Ft. Worth Stock Show as being interviewed by RFD, for their show Stock Show Confidential.

I have been asked why I chose the Hereford breed. The Hereford Association is more involved than any other breed association and they are very supportive in everything we do. Again, I am thankful for having this opportunity to represent the Hereford association and will continue to be supportive in my adulthood. ★

Because Junior Directors will have work duties beginning at 9am, Junior Directors ONLY will arrive from 7am-9am. All others will arrive 9am-4pm. There are no early arrivals. Please utilize the alleyways for your chutes, therefore providing the participants with more space for their cattle.

MINIATURE HEREFORDS Miniature Herefords will show under the AHA guidelines and rules.

Miniature Hereford exhibitors must become a member of the

TJHA/TJPHA in order to show and compete in contests. Dues may be

paid on the summary sheet. Ages to compete in the show and contests

(7 years old by January 1, 2012 and not older than 22 years old as of

January 1, 2012).

SPECIAL CLASSES

Junior AI Program: A class of females and a class of bulls resulting

from the AHA Junior AI program will be held in conjunction with the

show.

rules as closely as possible. You may come prepared with

teams for marketing or you will be put with a team at contest

sign-ups.

Midcontinent Livestock Supplements is pleased to be a part of the nutrition program of

these progressive Texas Polled Hereford Breeders.

We have great results using the MLS#1 Hi Performance Supple-Lix, the MLS #12 Mineral-Lix, and the #12 with IGR Fly Control tubs.

The palatability and consistant consumption of these products leads to a healthier cow herd and more robust set of calves.---Donlie McMullin

We like the “all natural “ ingredient concept of the MLS products. The addition of Amaferm® to all the products allows us to get

maximum utilization of our roughage both winter and summer. The added 9 B-Vitamins are an asset in combating stress as well as

an aid for the immunity system--- Paul and Danny Funk

Advantages of THA Membership

SERVICE – The Texas Hereford Association is a service organization to benefit the Hereford breed and the breeder.

Members are assisted in buying and selling cattle at private treaty and by auction.

The Texas Hereford Association sponsors the Commercial Hereford Heifer Show and Sale and the Texas Select Sale. These sales promote the use of better Hereford bulls and females. The Texas Hereford Association is also actively engaged in the promotion of Texas Herefords and in sponsoring seminars, field days, and other events to encourage educational opportunities for members.

ASSOCIATION – The Texas Hereford Association was organized in 1899. Its membership has included the elite of the Texas Hereford industry since its inception. First year membership dues are $95.00. Dues for active membership after the first year are $95.00 plus a $1.00 per head assessment on calves registered the previous year, less those steered, etc. Associate memberships are available for $75.00 per year. Each member receives an attractive membership certificate.

DIRECTORY ISSUE – Every active member of the Texas Hereford Association has a free listing in the Directory issue of The Texas Hereford. This Directory is used by thousands of Hereford breeders the year round. Information pertaining to your herd such as herd sires, bloodlines, location of farm or ranch, telephone numbers, etc., will be listed in this widely used reference book. This herd listing alone is worth the price of membership. Associate members are also listed.

THE TEXAS HEREFORD – Monthly publication of the Texas Hereford Association. It is the only publication in Texas devoted solely to Herefords. It includes news about the association, news about Herefords, and timely editorial features. Active members can list Herefords for sale FREE in the Herefords For Sale column. This service has been responsible for selling thousands of Texas Herefords all over the nation. Texas Hereford Association members may advertise in The Texas Hereford at low livestock rates – a considerable savings for your marketing program. Sale catalogs, brochures, flyers, and other marketing aids designed and produced by our professional staff at considerable savings. (Advertising rates will be sent on request.)

The role model brood cow for any breeder, for any pasture, for any point in history! Look at her accomplishments:

Born in Minnesota 13 years ago… then to Wyoming at age 4… after proving herself in every way… sold to Nebraska at age 8 topping our 2007 production sale and now… in perfect rig and health – SHE IS BACK HOME IN WYOMING.

Successfully fl ushed, AI’d and naturally bred numerous times in her career, she was recently described by an astute cowman as “looking just like a 7 year old!”

Christi has it all… wonderful fertility, abundant pigment (eyes, feet and udder), superb teat size and placement with that moderate “lasts forever” fl eshing and ranging ability that is our fi rst priority.

She is our program! We are presently using 2 sons, 4 grandsons, 11 daughters, and pastures full of granddaughters.

You are invited to stop in anytime and view this breed-icon cow and her progeny… you may want to plug her unmatched power into your program.
