As most of you are aware throughmy last leaflet, your Inplant has beenvery busy dealing with restructuringissues in our building and hope theleaflet answered a lot of questionsyou may have had. I can tell you, your leadership has come together asone and is working hard to get usthrough this difficult time as best aspossible. I am verye grateful for thesupport they have given me alongwith the members who have comeforward to show their support.Solidarity will be the key to getting usover this hurdle we are facing. Thanks again!

In my leaflet I explained where wewere at with restructuring, job cutsand postings, vacation allotment andsummer movement. Peopleapproached me confused with thedrastic reduction in students and thenumber of people moving forward. Ihave been telling people the past fewyears that this was the direction thecompany has been hinting they wouldgo, especially now, since Detroit hasbeen in the mix. Last year we had 70students come in because of specialprojects, union training, re-rackingand realignment. Also the uncertaintyof how things would come in viaBrownstown last year, had thecompany willing to pad the studentnumbers. This year however, thatsame workload does not exist, and

because of changes to the inboundprocess, Bramalea operations cannotjustify bringing in the same amount ofstudents. The company originally gotapproval for 25 students but with hardwork, later agreed to bring in 30. YourInplant has argued very hard to bringin the remaining 5 students for thesummer, but the company hasinsisted they can not justify goingfrom 25 to 35 because they arealready over budget. The Inplant willcontinue to push for more summerstudents so the members can get anopportunity to spend more qualitytime with their families. The Inplanthas even been criticized in the pastfor doing so, but is willing to acceptthe criticism to allow more summermovement.

The National Union has had manydiscussions and meetings with theFord Motor Company concerning thedevastating decision that Ford madeto shut down operations at theSt.Thomas plant. The National Unionhas put forward suggestions to theCompany that would make room forSt.Thomas workers to transfer toother locations including ours.Brother Dave Champagne has beenheavily involved in those talks at theFord Council Executive level and hasbeen working hard along with myselfat Ford CAW Council, to bring 55/10to our location to allow pref hire

opportunities to St Thomas people. The Union and Company arecontinuing to work out the numbers inregards to St. Thomas transfers, anda date that the transfers will takeplace has yet to be determined. Westill have a commitment from thecompany to replace anyone exitingafter 9 at our location.

In closing, I have had a lot of peopleapproach me about the morale hereat Bramalea. Considering the difficulttimes our facility has gone throughrecently, along with the uncertainty ofthe auto industry and changes hereat Bramalea, some of our membersmorale have hit an all time low. I haveasked the Company to sit down andtalk with the Union so we can bringtheir concerns forward. I have alsovoiced my displeasure to theCompany about some of the actionsmanagement and supervision hastaken recently, and told them thisneeds to be addressed. Ourmembers have made great sacrificesto help secure ALL of our jobs, Unionand management.

On behalf of the Inplant, I would liketo wish everyone a safe andenjoyable summer!

FEDEARAL ELECTION RESULTS

Federal Elections were completed onMay 2nd and the results have to beconsidered bitter sweet. I'll start withwhat I think is the bitter, StephenHarper's Conservatives saw anincrease in their seats, from 143 to167, taking much of the GTA in theprocess and forming a MajorityGovernment. In several tightlycontested ridings, the vote for the leftwas split between the Liberals andNDP, allowing the Conservatives tosneak up the middle and win by lessthan 5%. Early statements by Harper

indicate that allowing more privatedelivery of publicly funded health careis being considered, repealing thelong-gun registry, they will bepursuing more free trade agreementsand the budget will be balanced by2014 while implementing corporateand personal tax cuts. Leadingeconomists are already saying thatHarper's assertion that the costsavings can be achieved through civilservant attrition and updatingcomputer systems is unlikely. Expectspending cuts to social programs tobe among the top of the list of costsaving measures. Time will tell ifPrime Minister Harper is as scary asmany fear, but, I would recommendeveryone be prepared for numerousfights over the next four years, as hestarts implementing is right-wingagenda unchecked.

Now, for what I would call, the sweet. The leading story of the election hasto be that the Jack Layton led NDPcaptured a record 102 seats and willform the Official Opposition. Thepopular vote was an astounding 31%,its highest rating ever for the NDP.That success was bolstered mainlyby the dismal showing by the BlocQuebecois, receiving only 4 seats. Itwould seem that the NDP's platformpromising improvements to healthcare, CPP and tax incentives forcompanies that hire workers reallystruck a chord with averageCanadians, but, it is also safe toassume their may have been a littledissatisfaction with the Liberal Party.Layton will be bringing a host ofrookie MPs, so he will be relyingheavily on a few of his experiencedMPs, like the CAW's own PeggyNash, Peter Stouffer and MalcolmAllen, among others. Unfortunately, the shift to the left in Canadian votingwill have little impact because of themajority status of the Conservatives. It will be interesting to watch howJack Layton handles the additionaltime allotted for the opposition overthe next four years.

BENEFITS REPORT

Sharon Burton

I attended meetings in Windsor thismonth in my role with CAW/FordMaster Health and SafetyCommittee. One of the topics ofdiscussion was the Company beingunder surveillance by the WorkplaceSafety and Prevention Services.Bramalea has already been visited bythe WSPS. Oakville AssemblyComplex and Windsor Engine planthave visits scheduled also for themonth of April. Additionally theBramalea PDC and OakvilleAssembly Complex are scheduled forWorkwell Audits through theWorkplace Safety and InsuranceBoard.Workplaces that are visited bythe WSPS typically have lost time

case rates and WSIB premiums thatare higher than other workplaces intheir rate group. The purpose of theWorkwell Audit is to inspect theworkplace, interview staff and toobserve safety practices andprocedures in action. Although nodate has been given to the CAW wewill share that information once wereceive it.There have been many changes at

Bramalea since the U.S introducedthe changes to the inbound receivingprocess. There has been atremendous increase in the manualmaterial handling of parts atBramalea with less parts being putaway with PMHV and more put away

done by hand. We are continuingdiscussions with the Company toensure that safety and ergonomicsare the first consideration for Local584 members. We know that Ministryof Labour and Ford statistics showthat soft tissue and repetitive straininjuries account for over fifty percentof all injuries.I would like to remindworkers to take time to always worksafely . DO NOT become a statistic. I would like to wish everyone ahealthy and safe summer with familyand friends. In solidarity ,Thayne smith

MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AGOthe Canadian Labour Congressdeclared April 28 a National Day ofMourning for workers who have beenkilled, suffer disease or injury as aresult of work. Every year since, unions, labour councils, families andcommunity partners gather by thethousands to 'mourn for the dead'.What began through the efforts ofCanada's labour movement is nowobserved in more than 100 countries..

The Day of Mourning though, is alsointended to focus attention on whatwe can do to break the silence ofindifference and say enough to thesuffering caused by hazardousworking conditions.

Winter has finally ended and here weare back in nice spring weather. TheFederal Election is just over and itwas great to see the NDP make thosetremendous gains and become theofficial opposition. Not so great wasseeing the Conservatives get amajority. The trend these days is toweaken Unions and the labourmovement which I’m sure Harper willtry. It’s good to know the NDP will bethere to protect those rights. I guesstime will tell. I was very happy to seePeggy Nash (A long time CAWActivist) defeat her Liberal incumbentrival in the High Park riding.

At our May 4th meeting we had Dean

Lindsay from The CAW Retired

Workers Department speak to our

retirees about a number of issues.

One issue in particular that I learned

about was the CAW affiliate

membership policy letter (Available on

the CAW National website) that states

that spouses and surviving spouses

are automatically considered affiliate

members of our local and are allowed

to attend and participate in retirees

meetings but cannot vote on money

matters or run in elections. This policy

letter also includes a number of other

circumstances that a person could

apply to become a member of our

local chapter. If anyone would like

more information on this please get in

touch with me or the President’s

office.

I would like to congratulate Sister

Melony Luffman on her new position

as Benefit Rep and look forward to

her servicing the members and

retirees of Local 584. Also I would like

to congratulate Sharon Burton on her

retirement effective June 1st and the

many years that she has served the

members and Retirees of CAW local

584 - Thank you and good luck in the

new phase of your life. Also would like

to congratulate Michelle Harvey on

her recent election for Alternate

Benefit Rep.

I would like to welcome our newest

retirees and wish them every success

and happiness in their retirements.

They are Paul Uren, Sharon Burton,

Bill Pearsell, Fred Armstrong, Glen

Lewis and Craig Howard. The

retirees would like to extend their get

well wishes to Kim Clout hoping for a

speedy and full recovery. You are in

our prayers.

I would like to take this opportunity to

thank Frank Marek, (Vice-Chair),

Doug Berry (Recording Secretary),

Orville Shaw (Financial Secretary),

Norm Collins (Guide) Reg Galbraith

(Sgt at Arms)and Harry Deamer for all

the help and support they provide in

making our Retirees Chapter run

smoothly. Great job guys! In addition

the great support that we receive from

the leadership at local 584. Also want

to thank the Canadian Legion for

providing our meeting rooms every

month.

Human Rights

John McCloskey

Amnesty slams Canada’s human-rights record under Harper

Canada’s standing as a worldwidedefender of human rights hasplummeted under the StephenHarper government, a new reportfrom Amnesty International charges.

Meanwhile, a Simon FraserUniversity professor is slamming thereport as the ill-informed ranting of“armchair” human-rights experts, while a Vancouver human-rightslawyer applauds Amnesty for raisinga crucial issue during the federalelection campaign.

Amnesty’s Getting Back on the‘Rights’ Track report says the worldhas watched Canada underminehuman rights.

“In many troubling ways, Canada hasturned its back on universal human-rights principles,” the report says.

Amnesty cites Canada’s years ofstrong opposition to the UNDeclaration on the Rights ofIndigenous Peoples; “unflinchingrefusal” to raise concerns aboutIsrael’s human-rights record;“devastating” funding cuts toorganizations working for protectionof women’s rights; a refusal to

recognize the existence of a right towater; “steadfast determination” toavoid accountability for transferringAfghan prisoners into Afghan custodydespite the torture risk; and cuttingback of engagement in Africa “suchthat Canada is no longer a key playerin addressing pressing concernsabout conflict and poverty throughoutthe continent.”

SFU international-security specialistAndre Gerolymatos says Amnestyanalysts are out of touch. “They’renot living in the real world,” saidGerolymatos, a history professor. “Iget really annoyed when Canada’spicked on. I think we have areasonably good human-rightsrecord, compared to the rest of theworld, particularly the United States, and Britain and the EU.”

Refraining from criticizing Israel is along-standing Canadian foreignpolicy, Gerolymatos says. “We arepart of a much larger foreign-policyinitiative, which includes the UnitedStates,” he says.

Gerolymatos acknowledges Canadahas “fallen behind” on aid to Africa, but says that’s partly dictated by theeconomic downturn. Canada iscurrently helping to prevent “a smallgenocide” in Libya, Gerolymatos

says.

However, Gail Davidson ofVancouver, a director of Lawyers’Rights Watch Canada, believesAmnesty has highlighted a major shiftin Canadian policy.

“Canada has transformed from apeacekeeping country that really tooka leadership role in the developmentof international human rights to awar-making country that violatesinternational human-rights laws,”Davidson says.

Harper’s recent suggestion in Paristhat Canada’s military operation inLibya was intended to help bringdown Moammar Gadhafi displayedcontempt for international law thatprohibits the use of force for regimechange, and Canada brokeinternational law by transferringAfghan prisoners to Afghanauthorities in spite of a known riskthey’d be tortured, Davidson says.

I’m with Davidson on this. Pride inCanada’s good works around theworld used to be a key component ofthe Canadian identity, but underHarper, there’s less and less reasonto be proud.

As you all are aware, atragedy recently took place within ourworkplace. Rick Sarafinchin decidedto end his life due to his personalproblems. We strongly adviseeveryone not to follow that path. Lifehas its ups and downs but you haveto remember that after every night fallthe sun does shine. If anyone hasany problems, concerns, addictions,etc...any everyday life issues at allwhether it is work related or non-workrelated or whether you just needsomeone to hear you out, talk to yourEFAP reps. Nasir Naghar or GlenSwatman, we’re here for you aroundthe clock and will help you out the

best we can. We also work with agreat team of professionals shouldyou need any of their assistance aswell but please do ask for help, againit can be about anything, alcoholism, gambling, stress, etc...If you can’t getin touch with us in person, then we’reonly a phone call away. Seek help ifand when needed and do not underany circumstances take drasticmeasures to solve your problemsbecause that is not the solution.

With summer fast approaching, it’sgood to have a few reminders so wecan all enjoy it. Just remember to beresponsible if and when drinking.

Don’t drink and drive and risk yourlife as well as the life of others. Call acab or have a designated driver onhand. Remember, there are tons ofthings to occupy yourself with, alcoholism and substance abusearen’t one of them. So, this summerremember the three R’s, Respect forothers, Respect for yourself, andResponsibility for your actions. Onthat note, I’d like to say have a greatsummer and enjoy yourselves.

Thanks, your EFAP Reps,

The C.A.W. belief is that thestrength of our future is not only atthe bargaining table and on the picketline, it is in the classroom. TheC.A.W. considers education veryimportant for the future growth of ourunion and offers one of the mostextensive labour education programsin the world.

Recently, our local hosted an“Organizing Workers” course andconsidering the relatively small sizeof our local, we had a great turnout. It was an interactive course designedto provide participants with the basicinformation that non-unionizedworkers need to know. We discussed

some of the myths people have aboutunions, why organizing workers isimportant, and what the benefits ofbeing a union member are. Afterdiscussing these points we weregiven the opportunity to put thesepoints into practice using mockorganizing scenarios.

It turned out to be a fun day with lotsof laughs and the opportunity to meetother C.A.W. members. As local584’s Education Chairperson, mygoal is create as many opportunitiesfor members of our local to cometogether with members of other localsto learn about topics of similarinterests. There are many courses to

choose from. Whether you areinterested in “Building Activism”,“Health and Safety”, or “PlanningYour Future”, there is a courseoffered for everyone.

Visit the C.A.W. website for a list ofavailable courses. If there is acourse you think you might beinterested in attending, please seeme and I would be happy to getthings started. I share the C.A.W.’sview that education is key to buildinga stronger union and will do all I canto help educate our members. Iwould like to wish everyone a fun andsafe summer.

CLEAN FREAKnowadays everywhere we go there areantibacterial soaps and hand gels to helpprevent the spread of germs, but be waryof those containing tricosane. Researchersat the University ot Michigan School ofPublic Health found this chemicalcompound can cause more allergies inpeople who are overexposed. Exposureto high levels of bisphenol A may also

play havoc with the immune system. These chemicals are affecting younger people(brought up in the germ-free era) morethan the generations who believe a little dirtwon’t kill you, but will boost your immunesystem by making your body create antibodiesto fight off all those germs. lt’s actuallypossible to be too clean for your own good, soit you’re a total clean freak, lighten up a little. Itmight improve your health.

Our sister Sharon Burton has playeda major role inour Union formany years. On June firstSharon willbe retiringfrom ourfacility with22.1 yearsservice. Weall knowSharon, butthere is so

much more to tell. Sharon Burton was hired at FordMotor Co. on October 10, 1989. In2000 Sharon was appointed as thecommunity and Social ServicesChairperson. In 2002 she waselected to the position as well as theWomen's Advocate and AlternateBenefit Rep. In 2005 Sharon becameour full time Benefit Rep when ChrisWilski retired. These were certainly

big shoes to fill and Sharon wastedno time taking over and becoming atremendous benefit representativeand union activist all on our behalf.Sharon believes being a union repand activist made her a differentperson. She was a follower and hadlow self esteem. Activism helped hergrow as a person. She becamestrong and confident with the ability tofight for the rights of the people sheworks with and cares for. Sharonbecame a master at being able todeal with people according to theirindividual needs. She has beennonjudgmental in her dealings witheach of us as individuals. Sharonfeels she has become a better personwho has grown within the job.Outside of our union Sharon has alsogiven back to her community and thepeople in it. She is a member of theSalvation Army, care giver to herspecial needs nephew, and has aspecial bond with seniors. If a senior

needs a spin to church Sharon willoffer the ride to get them there. Shehas given much of her time over theyears to shelters and hospital visits. At home Sharon is wife to Keith, mother to Kim and Debbie, andGrandmother to James, Shane,Nicklas and Cierra. Sharon has livedin Brampton for 45 years and hasbeen married to Kieth for 43 years. For retirement Sharon wants tospend time with family and friendsand take some time to catch up andreconnect with cousins etc…With all of this to look forward toSharon will certainly stay just as busyas she was as a working lady.Sharon plans to continue her Unionactivities through our retirees chapteras well.We wish Sharon a long and happyretirement and thank her for all of hercare and service to us.

A QUICK BOOSTWhenever you feel your energy taking a nosedive, headfor the tap. Research shows even slightdehydration can significantly affect your energy level andput you in a had mood; however, having adrink of water boosts your energy almost immediately, while also quenching your thirst. The bonus: lt’sthe cheapest drink you’lI find (unless you drink onlybottled water). A study revealed that when collegestudents were denied water during workouts they notonly felt thirstier, but also more fatigued, angry, depressed and confused than the group of students whowere kept well hydrated. The researchersbelieve dehydration will lead to the same side effects inpeople who aren’t exercising.Source: Perceptual and Motor Skills
