Chocolate’s my middle name. Should be my first and last as well, as much as I consume. So, it’s with a happy mouthful of taste buds that I thank Vallejo Nissan and their Parts Manager, for hosting an Ice Cream Social at our May 17th ZONC meeting — complete with chocolate sauce. The setting was perfect, as was the centerpiece – a meticulously restored (1970 240Z).
If you’re one of the many members anxious to read the ZNews as soon as it arrives by e-mail or US mail, you’re in time to check out and register for the ZONC MariN SONOMa COaSt tOur taking place Saturday, June 6th. It’s a fun back roads tour that starts at the Petaluma Marina, 781 Baywood Drive. Drivers meet at 9:45 a.m. with a 10:15 a.m. departure. It’s a twisty-roads run along the coast and inland to Occidental, CA for lunch. Bob and Marci Jenkins host the ride and recommend you come with a full tank of gas. E-mail Bob at [email protected] if you plan to attend and eat lunch with the group. Or you can call him at (707) 546-6867.
Car all polished and ready to go? How about entering the Rosemont Car Show at Ninja Sushi Sacramento in Sacramento? It’s sponsored by Maximum Physical Health, an organization involved in after-school programs that promote physical activity to combat childhood obesity. They are planning music, games, and raffles. Fun for you, and a benefit to kids – it’s a win/win. Show time is 9:00 a.m., Sunday, June 14th. Contact Herman at (916)572-3775 or email [email protected] to register. Cost $25.00.
ZONC’s offering more outdoor fun on Saturday, June 20th, at the club’s 43rd Birthday Party PiCNiC. We’re returning to the popular Warm Spring Recreation Area at Lake Sonoma. I’ll be wrangling chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill. (Any cooking help would be appreciated.) We’ll have drinks and snacks and sweets. Members are asked to bring a side dish to share. Check out the flyer on page 3. The fun starts at 11: 00 a.m. with lunch served at 12:15 p.m.. Marci Jenkins would appreciate an RSVP by June 17th. E-mail her at thebeard@
sonic.net. Members and associate members are free. Guests are $5.00 each.
July is a great time to get away from California’s hot, dry weather. A nice option would be the warm, moist climate of Memphis Tennessee. Oh, there’s also the 28th AnnuAl ZCCA Z CAr Convention, July 14-18. Go celebrate the 45th birthday of the Z car in the birthplace of rock and roll. Organizers are promising a Texas Chili and Margarita Party, car shows, a riverboat dinner cruise down the Mississippi, Z Night on Beale Street, and two days at Memphis International Raceway for autocross, drag racing and high performance driving classes! (I sound like a tour guide.) But, don’t just take my word. Ask a few ZONC members who attended last year’s convention in San Diego and came home with trophies from the Judged Car Show and People’s Choice Show. They were all featured in the SePteMBer 2014 Z NewS.
Speaking of memorable events… ZONC has a big one coming up in September. It’s our aNNual Car ShOw at the BriSBaNe MariNa Sept. 26th, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.. Preparation is underway thanks to Marci and Bob Jenkins. But, there’s still so much to do to make this show a success. Head car wrangler, Jason Green, still needs volunteers to help direct competitors’ cars to the judging area. Mary Rozmajzl is looking for raffle booth volunteers and prize procurers. (I’ll start if off by donating a dozen jars of my homemade jam again this year.) How about helping stuff goodie bags? It comes with a free lunch and good fun. Contact Marci Jenkins if you want to help there.
And most importantly, we need friendly ZONC ambassadors who can procure event sponsors. There are expenses to a quality show – location rental, permits, trophies, to name just a few. Your help in finding sponsor underwriters (who can get their business name printed on the show t-shirt and in the newsletter) would be greatly appreciated. If everyone pitches in, it makes the work so much easier for each of us. And it makes it more fun! E-mail me at [email protected] if you’re willing to pitch in.
For this month’s safety tip I want to concentrate on the glove compartment. Mine’s usually stuffed with plastic forks, dead batteries and maps of places I will probably never travel to again. But, occasionally I clean it out and stock it with what really counts. I’m talking about proof of insurance, registration, the owner’s manual and a card with the recommended maintenance schedule.

Z-Car West Coast Nationals / Z-Bash 2015
By Ken Dorsey & Mary RozmajzlMotorsport Auto thinks it’s important to thank loyal
customers. They’ve been doing it 20 years now with their Z Car West Coast Nationals weekend party in Orange, CA. This year, to mark the 20th anniversary, and better describe the festive atmosphere, they’ve renamed it Z-Bash.And that’s what ZONCers Ken Clark and Mary Rozmajzl found when they drove down April 25th.
Z’s everywhere… every model, every color, every modification. Every parking lot and side street for several blocks around Motorsports storefront there was nothing but Z’s. (And a few Orange, CA motorcycle cops on duty to keep the streets reasonably clear for other traffic in the neighborhood.)
The three-day event began Friday night with a Z Grand Prix at the Dallas Karting Complex. Ken and Mary didn’t compete as they saved their energy for walking the rows and rows of Z most of Saturday. (Free food and drinks kept them
In case of emergency, I’d also suggest emergency contact numbers. And while you’re at it, add them to your cell phone and put them in your wallet, too. Another good idea is writing down any medical conditions, medications and allergies for each family member (in case you’re involved in an accident and can’t communicate these important facts yourself.)
With the space left, stash a flashlight, a pen and paper to exchange information after an accident, and maybe a few high-energy snacks so you can last through an extra-long rush hour or “interstate as parking lot” afternoons.

going.) One group of owners started their Saturday with a tour by the Pacific Ocean and then onto Z Bash.
Ken didn’t plan to stay Saturday night until closing as he and Mary wanted to get back to Vacaville before dawn Sunday morning. So, he opted to park his 240Z in an outlying parking lot rather than the main show area. Turns out Ken still had a steady stream of “lookers.” Questions back and forth on how Ken modified his radiator cooling fan cowling, where he had the headers chrome plated, how he painted the engine’s interior. He conducted a personal clinic for over 7 hours. And he passed out jam and cookies to his admirers.
Mary watched Dyno tests, smiled knowingly as owners detailed renovation adventures and learned how to retrofit the luggage area of a 350 Z for a family of cute Shih Tzu’s.
Sadly, Ken and Mary missed Sunday’s Fairlady Generation’s Meet & Cruise, going from the city of Orange to Lake Elsinore on some wonderful Orange and Riverside County Roads. Maybe next year.
If you're not listed - it's because the Data Base Manager does not have your month of birth.
And you're wished a Happy Birthday!

370Z Podium Finish at Continental Tire Monterey Grand PrixBy Ann DevorPhotos by Paul Gommel and Ann Devor
Doran Racing’s #14 370Z ran a close race, falling out of second place and finishing third in the final minutes of the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix on Saturday, May 2 at Laguna Seca Raceway. Running in the 18-car Grand Sport class, Doran Racing fielded two 370Zs against Camaro, Mustang, Porsche, BMW, Aston Martin and Mazda. In a very impressive driving performance, the #14 370Z driven by Brad Jaeger fought its way forward from a seventh place start and was running in second place and pressing for first place when the third place #15 Ford Boss Mustang on fresher tires came up and caught Jaeger, putting Doran Racing’s #14 in third place for a final finish 0.836 of a second behind the first place Camaro and only 0.284 of a second behind the Mustang after 84 laps.
This was the first podium finish of the racing season for Doran Racing. The #14 370Z left a Porsche 911 in fourth-place-dust nearly 6 seconds behind. And to keep it
interesting, the larger Street Tuner class of 28 cars (MX-5 Miata, Honda Civic, Porsche Cayman, Mini, BMW and Subaru) also raced on the track at the same time creating some difficult traffic situations that sometimes did not go well. Doran Racing’s other 370Z, #41 had its share of troubles, the worst when it failed to start after pitting. After replacing the alternator, #41 was able to complete only 61 laps.
Four classes of race cars competed in Sunday’s race, the Tudor United Sports Car Championship that was largely ruled by Corvettes that finished first, second, fourth and fifth in the Prototype class. Winners of the other classes were an ORECA FLM09 in the Prototype Challenge class, a BMW Z4 GTE in the GTLM class, and a Porsche 911 GT in the GTD class. With 35 race cars in different classes on the track at the same time, it was a whirlwind of crazy driving as race cars in one class lapped cars in another. For example, the winning Prototype #90 Corvette ran 112 laps, while the winning GTLM #24 BMW Z4 ran 108 laps. Our most
A May Tour Review article talked about the 43 Z car turn-out, plus a Corvette and a Toyota 2000GT, with a route that covered 125 miles. The tour went to Carmel and did the Great Seventeen Mile Drive.
In a Racing Column there was talk of ZONC going to the races at Laguna Seca and Sears Point to watch ZONC's Honorary President Walt Maas, who was the '74 National C Production Champion in a Z, race.
A Club Autocross Review talked about an April event at Pleasanton, put on by ZONC, with 44 ZONCer running and TTOD going to Tim Berry in his very modified Z, who was also the event chairman for ZONC.
There was a picture of a letter send to two ZONC members from the Cannonball Entrance Committee, stating that the committee could not accept their entry for the 1975 Cannonball.
On a full page calendar there were all kinds of events including a membership Tune-up Clinic at Concord Datsun, a autocross at Candlestick Park, a Intra-Club Rallye at the Duck Pond, Lake Merritt, Oakland, an autocross in Vallejo, and one by ESCA in Santa Rosa at Coddingtown.
The membership was listed as 382 in the Bay Area Region. (There were two regions, the other being Sacramento)
The PreSideNt was Mike Lawrence, ViCe-PreSideNt Jack Kane, SeCretary Paula Laskelle, treaSurer Juris Dundurs, aCtiVitieS ChairMaN Jim Warych, MariN area COOrdiNatOr Frank & Sloane Glasser, SONOMa area COOrdiNatOr Bob Jenkins. (My phone number was the same one as I have today).
exciting moment of Sunday afternoon was when a Dodge Viper SRT went wide right in front of us on Turn 5 and hit a Tudor sign anchored to the ground by sandbags, sending Tudor sign and car parts flying in the dust.
Enjoying the cool but beautiful day at Saturday’s Continental race were Z friends John LeBlanc, Jack and Yolanda Atkinson and Bill Roth. Bill Roth’s supercharged 350Z attracted a small crowd of admirers. We also had a very nice right-hand drive Fairlady Z join us in the corral on Saturday along with a couple of other Nissans. Sunday’s Z corral was a little light on Z cars, but with John LeBlanc and his beautiful 370Z joining us again, we had a nice line-up of Zs along with an Infiniti and Pathfinder.
All in all, it was another wonderful time at one of the happiest places on the planet with plenty of entertainment both on and off the track.
