PRESIDENT'S C O R N E R

ZONC has made charity contributions to different organizations over the past five years. We have made donations to the Wheel Chair Foundation and the Susan B Komen Foundation. This year the Executive Board has decided that a contribution to a “Red Cross Japan Relief Fund” would be appropriate. We all drive a Japanese sports car, one of which changed the world of sport cars in the early 1970s.

On March 11, 2011, the north coast of Japan was hit by a horrible tsunami after a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred 80 miles offshore. This fund is supporting the Red Cross, which is providing relief and aid to victims.

I had the honor of being a dependant of a United States Air Force service member who was stationed at Misawa Air Force Base, Misawa, Japan and at Kadena Air Force Base, Kadena, Okinawa during 1968 to 1972, When we were stationed at Misawa, I was able to see the beautiful country side of Japan and experience the benefits of Japanese culture. I am greatly saddened by the destruction and the lost of life that occurred during this disaster,

One of our ZONC members, has committed to a donation of $600 for this fund. We are asking all members to participate in this relief fund if you can. We will use our Annual Car Show at Brisbane to finalize collection for this relief contribution. Please give if you can. Please see: zonc.org for further details!

We like to hear from our members about the events that they have either planned or participated in and would like to share with our membership. In order to submit an article, pictures, or flyers to the Z News, please contact our Z News Editor, Bob Jenkins, at: [email protected]. Please be advised that there is a deadline of the 15th of each month for the submission of your contribution to the Z News.

Please see: zonc.org for the latest updates!

It's Not to Late. . . .

to plan to attend our Annual Car Show! So, mark your calendar for Saturday, July 9th!This year the Annual Car Show is held at the Brisbane Marina. So, wash and shine your favorite Nissan or Datsun sports car, G35 or G37 and find your way to the Bris-bane Marina. You might win an award in one of the 26 classes. This year each of the 13 classes will also have a modified class. There is also a Best of Show award. You, the participants, will be the judges.

Once again there will be numerous raffle prizes. Imagine winning a day on the track at Thunderhill from Hooked on Driving or a $100.00 gift certificate from Z Car Garage for parts and labor, or a Nissan Polo shirt?

And you will have the opportunity to make a tax de-ductable donation to the American Red Cross for the "Red Cross Japan Relief Fund".

And if you missed the chance to order a T-Shirt., you'll have the opportunity to buy one at the Show, as this year's awesome event T-Shirt will be for sale in L and XL sizes and in limited quanities.

There will be a choice of food vendors on site, with coffee available in the morning.

So, plan to spend the day with lots of great people, old and new friends, see lots of great cars - don't forget your camera! - and enjoy the lovely green setting on the Marina and a wonderful view of the bay! All this for only $40.00, includes one raffle ticket. Extra raffle tickets are on sale along with the limited number of event T-Shirts.

Karen and Pete Iozzia drove up in their 350Z roadster, brave souls. They were followed by David Jaffe. By now, it was lunch time and Karen and Pete took off for the food and wine tent, though it was still pouring outside. More people returned to their cars and left. There were only four cars left. Paul and I were soaked, and my rain coat was wadded up in a wet ball on the floor. We decided to go, leaving Dale and Chris in the paddock with two other empty Zs.

Dale and Chris toughed it out as did Karen and Pete. Pete reports that the food tent was fantastic and they met a lot of interesting people while everyone waited out the storm. The sun came out in the afternoon and the track dried up. Best of all, Dale, Chris, Karen and Pete got to go on the parade lap later on in the afternoon, a just reward for their patience and perseverance. All is well that ends well and there’s no way it’s going to rain again next year.

Turn Z at Infineon RacewayBy Ann Devor

It was a dark and stormy morning at Turn Z at the Sonoma Historics on Saturday, June 4th. Paul and I arrived at Infineon Raceway’s Turn 7 early – the paved lot was nearly empty except for a couple of British cars on the side. Soon we had the company of Alex Cote in his vintage Datsun 1600 when it started to rain again. Dwight Ferguson and Craig Koloske arrived at the corral and the weather showed promise of clearing. Rob Fuller in his green 240Z led a line of Z’s along with drier weather. Following Rob were lovely Meghan Brady in her 350Z, Josh Corwin, Steve Bickford and Alvin Gogineni. After checking out the corral, Rob and friends took off for the pits. The weather was clearing and race cars were taking practice laps on the track.

Doug Dawe showed up in his stunning red 240Z. About that time, Yolanda called to say that South San Francisco was in the midst of a downpour. Sure enough, we looked south into a stiff wind and a black sky. Then the rain started up again. Trevor Meads drove in, followed by Dale and Chris Kusaba in their amazing 350Z. Despite the weather, Dale lifted the hood for all to see. Then it really started raining. Wade Warren and his daughter arrived in the ZCar Garage badged red 370Z, but didn’t stay long. Rob and company returned to report that the practice laps were rain delayed, the race cars were all under covers, the pits were soaked, they were soaked and the beer line was ridiculous. They took off.

The weather was perfect, the turnout was good and the drive was great. Participants in the Brunch Run gathered at 10 a.m. in the Putah Creek Café for a lei-surely meal. It gave us all time to renew acquaintanc-es and meet new ones. After brunch we met in the park across from the restaurant for a driver’s meeting. We had 24 cars, with our largest turnout of 370Zs (8).

We left Winters at 12:15, heading up Highway 128 to the Putah Creek Dam Overlook for some pictures of the cars and the river and Lake Berryessa. The cars left the Overlook in groups of 6, five minutes apart and drove to the Lake Hennessey boat launch area, where we waited for all the cars to catch up for some more pictures and to use the facilities.

Leaving Lake Hennessey, the ride took us to the Silverado Trail and then to Highway 121, with a substantial number of challenging curves

and finally the short, but challenging drive down Wooden Valley Road to Highway 80.

This run was a good tune up for both drivers and cars for the longer runs later this summer. Kudos to Cur-tis Lewis for the planning and managing of this run.

Don’t forget the Brunch Casino Run, on Saturday, July 16, 2011.
