Hello compatriots,I am glad to be writing

this dispatch as your ArizonaDivision Commander.

It has been a very busysummer for the SCV. First wehad our Arizona Reunion inJune. We elected new officersand thanks again to PVT NathanT. Wanslee Camp 2096 for host-ing the event and to the localOCR ladies for the fine decora-tion and desert.

We had a great turn outfor the National Reunion. Thecamps that were in attendancewere 1202, 1710, and 2096 (seethe article on page 2) .

We are getting ready fora busy Fall. In August, the flagceremony commemorating Tuc-son’s 237th Birthday on Mon-day, August 20, 2012, at 6:30p.m., in the courtyard of the Pre-sidio San Augustin del Tucsónin downtown Tucson. There isgoing to be a SCV National

Leader Workshop in ColoradoSprings on August 25th. Markyour calendar for the 15th ofSeptember for the DEC meetinghosted by the Texas JohnSlaughter Camp 2074 in Tuc-son. October brings us the Gra-ham County Fair Parade on the12th and on the 21st is the Hell-dorado Days Parade in Tomb-stone. Come and represent theSCV at these events.

I want to get on a seriousnote. I want us all to make it agoal this year to recruit at leastone new member to the SCV.There are millions of Americanwith Southern and Confederatelinage. We need to recruit andretain these people into our or-ganization. A good way to dothis is to utilize a speaker fromthe Arizona Division’s SpeakersBureau list to come and give aninformational talk at your campmeetings, to the community

The Sons of Confeder-ate Veterans held its 117th An-nual Reunion & Convention atthe Embassy Suites Confer-ence Center in Murfreesboro,Tennessee. The MurfreesboroCamp 33 hosted the event.

After the opening cere-monies, the Adjutant-in-Chiefcalled the roll and determineda quorum was present. Therules of order were adopted aswere the orders of theday. Editor-in-Chief FrankPowell was appointed to serveas Parliamentarian.

The Executive DirectorBen Sewell gave his re-port. As of today, the SCVhas 25, 338 members includ-ing 19 Real Sons and 3475Life Members. He presentedthe budget for the next fiscalyear which was adopted. Cop-ies are available from the Divi-sion Adjutant.

The Adjutant-in-Chiefpresented the minutes of the2011 convention. A minormisspelling error was cor-rected. The minutes were ap-proved as corrected.

The Judge Advocate-in-Chief gave his report. Henoted that an explanation ofthe Disciplinary Procedures isnow available online atwww.scv.org. He reviewedthe IRS regulations affectingthe SCV’s 501(c)(3) status andstated that lawsuits involvingheritage violations would beconsidered on a case-by-casebasis.

The Chief of Staff reit-erated the importance ofCamps establishing a Campspecific email address andsubmitting reports in a timelyfashion. He noted that only 16Divisions submitted a reportfor this year’s convention.

The Chaplain-in-Chiefgave his report, noting that anemail list for SCV Chaplainsand others with an interest isavailable. It is titled TheChaplains Corps Chroni-cles. I will find the link so in-terested Camp and DivisionChaplains may subscribe.

The Adjutant of theEurope Camp who lives inBerlin, FRG, gave a report onthe overseas Camps and theiractivities.

The H.L. HunleyJROTC Awards Chairmangave a report. He noted thatthe Mechanized Cavalry hasoffered to sponsor any awardthat does not have a Camp orDivision sponsor.

Lt, CinC Barrow re-ported on the Leadershipworkshops and encouraged asmany as possible to attend theupcoming workshop on 25August in Colorado Springs.

Lee Miller, Chairmanof the Shiloh 150th Anniver-sary reenactment, presented acheck to the N.B. Forrest Boy-hood Home fund for$1,000.00. This was frommoney raised at the Shiloh re-enactment.

Lee Miller, Chairmanof the Convention Committee,(same Lee Miller) reportedthat next year’s conventionwill be held in Vicksburg, MS;the 2014 Convention will beheld in Charleston, SC andthat the committee recom-mends that the 2015 conven-tion be held in Richmond,VA. A counter proposal wasmade by the Texas Division tohold the 2015 convention inDallas. A vote was taken byvoice whether or not to acceptRichmond (the vote did NOTstipulated that if Richmondwas rejected that Dallas wouldbe the location—only that thevote was to accept or rejectRichmond). The chair statedthat the NAY vote was the ma-jority. A motion was made fora Division of the House. Afterconsultation with the Parlia-mentarian, the chair deter-mined that a written ballotwould be taken on Fridaymorning. If the YEA vote is

the majority, Richmond willbe the site of the 2015 conven-tion. If the NAY vote is themajority, then a motion to ac-cept the Texas Division’s pro-posal will have to be made,seconded and passed. Morefun yet to come!

The business sessionwas recessed at 12:30PM. Compatriots Payne,Bowman, Montgomery, Tip-ton and Mrs. Tipton took thetour to Elm Springs, Forrest’sBoyhood Home and partici-pated in the dedication of aConfederate Memorial inEagleville. Much progress hasbeen made on the Forresthome and Elm Springs is al-ways a treat to visit. Con-gratulations to those responsi-ble for the wonderful Memo-rial in Eagleville!

Second Business SessionThe Forrest Cavalry

Corps breakfast was held be-fore the business session. Thespeaker, Rev. Shane Miller,spoke on Forrest’s Christianconversion.

The vote on whether ornot to accept Richmond as thesite of the 2015 convention hasbeen postponed until tomor-row when all the other votes(election of officers and ap-proval of amendments) willtake place.

Past CinC McMichaelspoke about this year’s sesqui-centennial event in Richmond(the celebration of the estab-lishment of the Confederategovernment in February1862). The next event will be

held on 16 March 2013 atBeauvoir in Biloxi, MS.

ANV CouncilmanGene Hogan spoke about theSCV Commemorative silvercoin project and how Divi-sions can make money whenpeople from their state (do nothave to be SCV members) buythe coins.

The representative ofthe Pemberton Camp in Vicks-burg spoke about the 2013convention!

Bragg Bowling of theVA Division spoke about thenext Stephen D. Lee Instituteto be held in Augustine, FL.

Divisions soon. By 21 Dec,the Divisions will send theirplans to the Camps. Vision2016 will also include a book-let entitled “WhatWorks”. This will be distrib-uted throughout the Confed-eration. A national speakersbureau was established and theDivision broke into individualcaucuses to name members tothis bureau. Commander Eng-land named several compatri-ots to be part of the bureau.They have been notified.Commander England also ap-pointed Adjutant Tipton as theAZ Division’s Vision 2016Point of Contact.

Lt. CinC Barrow gavehis report, emphasizing re-cruiting, retention and the up-coming leadership work-shops. He also highlighted theCommanders/Adjutant onlinetraining available now atwww.scv.org.

CinC Givens gave hisreport. His emphasis was ondefending our heritage, prepar-ing for growth and reempha-sizing the programs alreadymentioned.

Third Business Session &Voting

In the Army of Trans-Mississippi meeting, CharlesLauret of Louisiana waselected as Executive Council-man. Todd Owens of Louisi-ana was elected as ATM Com-mander. In the main businesssession, CinC Michael Givens

was reelected by acclama-tion. No one ran against him.

In the race for Lt.CiC: Past CiC ChuckMcMichael nominated PaulGramling of Louisiana. AOTCommander Tom Strain sec-onded the nomination. Heri-tage Defense Chairman TomHiter nominated Lt. CiC KellyBarrow. CiC Michael Givensseconded the nomina-tion. Both candidates gaveelection speeches.

The Louisiana Divisiondonated $1000.00 to the Con-federate Museum at ElmSprings fund. Executive Di-rector Ben Sewell presentedthem with a gavel. Any Campor Division donating $1000.00or more will receive this com-memorative gavel.

Jack Marlar explainedthe Sesquicentennial Societyand asked for donations.

Credentials CommitteeChairman Jim Barr explainedthe voting procedures for vot-ing on the election for Lt. CiCand for voting on the measureto accept or reject Richmondfor the site of the 2015 na-tional convention. The delega-tion chairmen then went tovote.

The rest of the dele-gates voted on the proposedconstitutional amend-ments. The results are:

Amendments 1 and 2to the constitution were com-bined. These amendments al-lowed a Camp to “secede”from its division. It was de-feated.

A resolution to directGHQ to undertake a study of aless expensive MRS systemfor smaller divisions waspassed.

A resolution to endorseand support the remembranceand memorial of the CSSShenandoah in Liverpool,England, was passed.

A resolution of appre-ciation to the convention hostCamp was passed.

A resolution of appre-ciation to the Chief of Staffand the Chairman of HeritageDefense was passed.

A resolution with pro-visions condemning the CityCouncil and officials of Reids-ville, NC for their actions re-garding the Confederatemonument and appealing tothe NC Division of the UDCto stop collaboration with thecity and the forces of politicalcorrectness was passed.

A resolution condemn-ing the Museum of the Con-federacy for not flying a Con-federate flag at the new MOCin Appomattox was passed.

A resolution condemn-ing the Executive Director ofthe Museum of the Confeder-acy, S. Waite Rawls, for hisrefusal to fly a Confederateflag and for his other actionsdetrimental to our heritage waspassed.

It’s interesting that the Union wasfighting a war to “free the slaves” but werewilling to buy them from “loyal” slaveholders.Just suppose the Federal Government, had theyreally wanted to “free the slaves” ,offered

compensated emancipation, perhaps this cruelwar would have been avoided. Brazil, theUnited Kingdom and even Russia freed slaveswithout an illegal invasion and a bloody war!

am reflecting on the recentlyconcluded 117th Annual SCVReunion and Convention. Tenof our Arizona Compatriotsattended the convention. Allof us thoroughly enjoyed theexperience and I hope to seemore of our Camps repre-sented at future conventions.A report of the convention’sproceedings is on page 2.

Our pro-jected expenses include theJROTC awards, expenses formaintaining Confederate vet-erans’ graves, the cost of pre-paring and mailing MRS duesstatements, payments to GHQfor dues for Division HQCamp members and donationsto other organizations andcharities.

The fiscal health of theDivision depends upon yourtimely payment of dues andyour continued membershipand support in your Camp.

Dr. Robert Massey,Sesquicentennial Committee

Chairman, gave a report on thecommittee’s activities sincethe last convention.

The Time & PlaceCommittee selected Camp1708 to host the 2013 DivisionConvention. It will be held onor about the first Saturday inJune 2013 in the East Valley,metro Phoenix area.

The Brigade Com-manders gave their reports.Commander Brown waived hisreport in lieu of the CampCommanders’ reports. Com-mander Meek provided a writ-ten copy.

The Division GravesRegistrar gave his report.

The Camp Command-

ers gave their reports.

The acquisition of theflag pole at Picacho Peak nearthe old Nickerson Restaurantwas tabled until further infor-mation has been gathered.

The status of Camp1647 was discussed. Compa-triot Jason Cook, a recenttransfer from another divisionhas expressed interest in bring-ing the Camp back to fullstatus. The Division Com-mander directed that these ef-

forts continue.The proposed amend-

ment to the Division constitu-tion that would create a Divi-sion Life Membership pro-gram was discussed. Themeasure died for lack of a mo-tion and second.

Commander Montgom-ery proposed that the Divisionestablish a list of “All Handson Deck” events where asmany members as possiblewould be encouraged to at-tend/participate. After muchdiscussion, the measure wastabled. Commander Mont-gomery directed the Adjutantto survey the membership forsuggestions of events to in-clude on such a list.

Compatriot MikeAgnew moved that the Divi-sion stop printing and mailinghard copies of The Rebel Yell.Further he proposed that eachCamp be responsible fordownloading, printing andtransmitting hard copies totheir Camp members who donot have email. CommanderGlenn Meek seconded the mo-tion. The motion carried. Ef-fective with the Summer 2012issue of The Rebel Yell, nohard copies will be printed andmailed. This will save the Di-vision $200.00-$300.00 peryear.

Camp 1708 reportedthat they had expelled PastCommander Marc Fentress forcause in that he had misappro-priated Camp funds. GHQ hastransferred him to Camp 584pending resolution of the mat-ter. He has until 1 July 2012to appeal the decision to theDEC. If he does not, the mat-ter is considered adjudicated.Camp 1708 can then requestthat the GEC expel him fromthe SCV or let the matter standas it is.

Compatriot DarrenMullen of Camp 1202 is work-ing on a searchable graves database that can be linked directlyto the national website, theDivision website and all Ari-zona Camp websites. He isalso working to establish a Di-vision domain name and amore workable and appealingDivision website. A motionwas made, seconded andpassed to allow him to go for-ward with this project and topresent a completed workabledata base and website to the

DEC.Camp 1708 announced

that they would be installing aVA grave marker on the graveof Isom J. Nichols in Globe.A dedication ceremony will bescheduled for a later date.

The SCV NationalLeadership conference to beheld in Colorado Springs, COand hosted by the ColoradoDivision was discussed. PastDivision Commander Mont-gomery and Adjutant Tiptonwill attend. Other Divisionand Camp officers as well asall Compatriots were invited toattend as well. The Adjutantwill provide further informa-tion. Also, information isavailable on the SCV Websiteat www.scv.org.

Commander Montgom-ery adjourned the business ses-sion and, after a short break,reconvened the Reunion.Lunch was served.

Mrs. Pat Crawford ofthe General Joe WheelerChapter 966, UDC, presentedgreetings on behalf of herchapter and the UDC. Mrs.Paula England of the ArizonaCavalry Chapter 2683, UDC,presented greetings on behalfof her chapter, the ArizonaDivision UDC and the SaffordChapter of the Order of theConfederate Rose.

Eagle ScoutProposal!Mr. Chris Harper, an

Eagle Scout candidate, pre-sented his proposal for his Ea-gle Scout project to Camp1710 at the Camp’s 21 Junemeeting.

Chris proposes to con-duct a major clean-up of theConfederate cemetery andstage station ruins at DragoonSprings. He offers to cutdown the mesquite trees grow-ing in and around the ruins andthe graves, clear the trail fromthe parking area to the gravesite and ruins, repair the signin the parking area and con-struct a ‘bridge” over the washallowing easier access to thesite. This ‘bridge” will alsoallow us to bring the artillerypieces to the site for the cere-monies. Lowe’s home im-provement store is donatingthe materials and other Scoutsand SCV members will assist.The Camp voted to accept theproposal and will coordinatewith the US Forest Service forany necessary permits. TheCamp will provide other assis-tance as necessary.

An encounter at Gettysburg involved Anson Miller, a 40-year-old Northern private, who was wounded four times on McPherson'sRidge, an advanced position west of the Union's main line on Ceme-tery Ridge. He was unable to retreat with the rest of the Federals asthe Confederates overran their position. Some ragged rebels had be-gun to take his clothing, food, and equipment, when he uttered someparticular words which are easily recognized by every Mason as ameans of identify. A Tennessee Mason by the name of Menturnstepped forward and demanded Miller's possessions be returned tohim, which they were. The wounded Yankee was then given food,water, and protection. At the first practical time he was removed to ahospital where several of his Confederate Masonic brothers visitedhim, but his wounds proved mortal and he died on 1 August 1863 af-ter being returned to his own lines before the Southern army retreated.

Another Gettysburg incident relative to members of the Ma-sonic Lodge involved Confederate Colonel Joseph Wasden, a memberof Franklin Lodge #11, Warrenton, Georgia, and the commander ofthe 22nd Georgia Infantry. He was killed on the Emmetsburg Road on3 July 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg. While the bulletswere still flying, a private belonging to the 2nd Rhode Island foundColonel Wasden's body, and upon examination discovered a docu-ment that identified him as a Master Mason. The private promptlydelivered the paper to Captain Foy, of his Regiment, whom he knewto be a Mason.

Considering it his duty as a Brother Mason, Captain Foyenlisted the aid of Brother Corporal Stalker, and three other MasonicBrethren, all of whom proceeded to the place Colonel Wasden hadfallen. They carefully wrapped the body in a blanket, dug a gravenearby, still under sharp Confederate fire, and tenderly, reverently laidtheir departed brother to rest. A green leaf of corn served in place ofthe customary sprig of acacia used at Masonic funerals, and the soulof their brother was thus committed to "the Supreme Architect of theUniverse.
