HISTORY Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi was born on 15th August, 1898.
He is regarded as the father of 20th century India's hotel business. He started his hotel career as a clerk in the Cecil hotel in Shimla &
soon became an assistant to the manager.
After his retirement in 1934 with the help of family resources he purchased the hotel
This is how the first Oberoi Hotel came up in Shimla which he named as ‘The Oberoi Cecil Hotel.
HISTORY
In the year 1938, Mr. Oberoi acquired The Grand in Kolkata.
The hotel, had been empty for years, due to death of over a hundred foreigners who were guests during the cholera outbreak.
The hotel was refurbished and the following year, 1939, at the start of World War II, 1500 beds were made available to the British Army, as thousands of troops filled Kolkata.
By 1941, M. S. Oberoi was becoming well known in the hotel business and, in recognition of his services to the industry in time of war, Indian authorities bestowed on him the title of Rai Bahadur.
This was the start of what we today know as the Oberoi Empire.
