Luke 2:21-24“And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord’) and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said …’”

Three Aspects of Purification•The Law required all male children to be

circumcised on the 8th day after birth.• “He who is eight days old among you shall

be circumcised.” (Gen 17:12, ESV)

Three Aspects of Purification• The Law required all male children to be

circumcised.

•The Law required women to wait 40 days after the birth of a son before presenting them at the temple for purification.

(Leviticus 12)

Three Aspects of Purification• The Law required all male children to be circumcised.

• The Law required waiting 40 days for purification.

• The Law required the mother to present the firstborn son before the Lord to be “redeemed” by an offering of a sacrifice.• “When the days of … purifying are complete,

she shall bring to the priest … a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtle dove for a sin offering … And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons.” (Lev 12:6-8, ESV)
