Foundation Day 2017Foundation Day Mon 6 March 2017 dawned a
beautiful day and great sea conditions in Emily Bay for the
Re-enactment.
Large crowds of people gathered to watch actors portraying the
23 souls who landed that day in March 1788; 229 years ago. They had
first arrived in Port Jackson with the First Fleet on January 26th
1788 after a gruelling voyage from the other side of the world.
They had barely lost their sea legs before on the 15th February,
the six women convicts and nine male convicts along with three
seamen, two marines, a surgeon and surgeon’s mate and their
appointed Commandant, Lieutenant Phillip Gidley King, were sent on
board the “Supply” to establish a settlement on small, remote
Norfolk Island.

3 March. Two surveyors Gary Smith and Dr Furio Virant, performed
the assessment. Feedback from the surveyors was very positive and
the clinic has been recommended for accreditation. This confirms
that the clinic is a high quality practice and meets all the
standards as required by the Royal Australian College of General

Norfolk Island Foundation Day - Let’s Keep It In Context!
The following is an extract from our edition of 5th March, 1983
that begins with the following words:- “Although the Public Holiday
this year is on Monday, Sunday March 6th, is actually the 195th
Anniversary of the landing of Lieut. Philip Gidley King and his
small party of 22 persons who formed the First Settlement on
Norfolk Island in 1788”.
The nearest thing to a Foundation Day celebration back in 1983
was the visit of a group of the Fellowship of First Fleeters and
their spouses. They came to Norfolk with the express purpose of
placing a plaque on the grave of First Fleeter Thomas Headington
and had asked the Administrator, Mr. Peter Coleman to do the
unveiling.
President of the Fellowship of First Fleeters, Mrs. Beryl Lewis,
said that as far as they have been able to find out, there are 14
First Fleeters buried at Kingston but Thomas Headington’s grave is
the only one traced so far.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FOUNDATION DAY
The article continued - “After many years of letting this
historical day lapse, it is good to know that an effort is being
made to re-establish Foundation Day as an occasion for young people
to remember. To this end, there is to be a picnic at the Youth
Centre on Monday for families.
There will be a treasure hunt, sand modelling, relay races -
altogether, a fun day for the kids - something by which they will
remember Foundation Day and as they grow older, realise the meaning
of his historical day of the island.
And here is the article in the Edition of 12th March 1983, under
the heading Foundation Day Perpetuation Committee formed - from
Alice (Buffett):- “Brilliant sunshine, gentle sea breezes, clear
blue Pacific waters and glistening golden sands welcomed a happy
throng of revellers who filled the beaches and foreshores of Sydney
Cove from Kingston Pier to Point Hunter last Monday, the public
holiday given to commemorate the possession of Norfolk Island for
the British Crown by Lieut. Philip Gidley King on 6th March, 195
years ago.
That may sound a long time ago, but to one of the junior members
of the Foundation Day Perpetuation Committee, Jason Richards, 1788
is not so far away from 1983 at all, because his grandfather’s
mother who married Brancker Nobbs I, was the great grand-daughter
of Lieut. Philip King himself, who had raised the Union Jack at
Kingston and toasted “Success to ye Colony” on 6th March 1788.
Aunt Sybil King married Brancker Nobbs I and no doubt Brancker
Nobbs II will be participating in the Bi-Centennial Foundation Day
celebrations in 1988.
What a great occasion for a pageant! Such plans, and many
others, can be encouraged and developed by the excellent embryo
committee now formed, who
seek participation from all interested members of the community.
The committee comprises both junior and senior members,
representing a broad spectrum of the community who wish to
re-establish an organised Foundation Day activities which were once
amongst the traditional annual highlights, but inactive over recent
years. Jeremy Watson, Natalie Steer, Vanita and Dwain Buffett,
Alison Christian, Desire Boudan, Joel Christian and many more
showed their organising ability and keenness to co-operate with
others. In all, Foundation Day 1983 was a great success!
Thanks were extended to all who participated in any way to the
success of the 1985 Foundation Day celebrations. “For three years
now there has been an effort to rekindle community interest in
commemorating Foundation Day in a meaningful way: and each year has
been an improvement on the other.
“The excellently organised re-enactment of Lieutenant Gidley
King establishing the first European Settlement on 6th March 1788
deserves special commendation. It is gratifying to know that Mike
Prentice has accepted a request to organise another performance for
Foundation Day 1986 which he confidently says will be bigger and
better than the one just finished.
1788 - Foundation Day - 1988 -The programme commenced with the
arrival of His honour the Administrator Commodore John Matthew and
Mrs. Matthew who were met by John Brown, MLA, President of the
Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly. His Excellency the
Governor-General and Lady Stephen arrive at 8.55 a.m. and a
Vice-Regal Salute, first 4 bars and last 4 bars of “Advance
Australia Fair” were rendered by the 1st Military District
Band.
The re-enactment of the landing by representatives of the
original settlers, took place. Mr. Brancker Nobbs II played the
part of his forebear Phillip Gidley King and as a mark of respect
to the visiting First Fleeters/Convicts/Historical groups here for
the occasion, representatives of these groups took part.
At the conclusion of the “Foundation”, Brancker read the
Proclamation claiming the island for King George III and everyone
nearly jumped out of their shoes as the Adelaide Royal Marines
fired off a single volley from their muskets!

No Royalties Collected For Norfolk Island Fishing
In December last year I visited Norfolk Island (at my own
expense) and met with a number of people in official and
non-official capacities.
A comment was made to me that the Commonwealth Government was
collecting millions of dollars in royalties from fishing activities
around Norfolk Island, and I undertook to find out whether that is
true and if so, what the money is used for.
At Senate Estimates in February I questioned representatives
from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) and they
confirmed no royalties are collected. AFMA said Australian fishers
are given access to some waters around Norfolk Island although
there is an exclusive zone where only fishers from Norfolk Island
can operate.
AFMA said the gross value of production from Commonwealth
fishers operating in waters outside the exclusion zone around
Norfolk Island varies but could reach $2 million a year. AFMA
collects about $15 million a year from the entire Commonwealth
fishing industry on a cost-recovery basis and says a very small
percentage of that would be for effort undertaken in waters
adjacent to Norfolk Island.
So the rumour that the Commonwealth Government collects millions
of dollars in royalties and permit fees for fishing in the vicinity
of Norfolk Island is incorrect,

Appointment of Child Welfare Officer
I’m pleased to inform the community the Department of
Infrastructure and Regional Development, the Norfolk Island
Regional Council, and the Norfolk Island Health and Residential
Aged Care Service (NIHRACS) have together selected and appointed a
new Child Welfare Officer, Mr Stuart Moakes.
Stuart commences in the role on Island on Friday 10 March 2017
and comes with a wealth of experience in working with children and
their families, both in the United Kingdom and Australia.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Kate Lemerle
for her hard work and dedication to the role since September last
year and her contribution to the wellbeing of children in the
Norfolk Island community.
As a part of a process to improve child wellbeing services on
Norfolk Island, the Child Welfare Officer will be employed by
NIHRACS on a full time basis so more time can be dedicated to
working with the community to improve the wellbeing of children and
families.
These new arrangements will help to support better integration
with health professionals and associated service providers.
Stuart is keen to build his understanding of the different types
of support children and their families need on Norfolk Island and
is looking forward to working with the community. As always, if you
would like to discuss anything with the Child Welfare Officer,
Stuart can be contacted on 51115.

First Fleet Celebrations The Norfolk Island Travel Centre was
delighted
to welcome 34 people travelling to the Island this week to
participate in First Fleet Celebrations, centred on Foundation Day.
With many in the group descended from First and Second Fleeters who
also lived on Norfolk Island, the week presented a moving
opportunity to stand on the very land where their ancestors lived
and worked over 200 years ago.
Foundation Day itself offered the chance to be immersed in the
arrival of the first group of 23 to Norfolk Island in 1788, and
then be happily entertained over a sumptuous lunch with Pinetree
Tours. Focusing on family stories occurred during a Norfolk Island
Museum presentation on Researching Family Histories via the records
and materials on-hand at the KAVHA Information Centre at No. 9
Quality Row.
A customised First Settlement Tour by Janelle Blucher provided
an opportunity to get thoroughly immersed in the island’s history
from 1788 to 1814. For some in the group their ancestors arrived on
Norfolk on the last voyage of the Sirius before she was wrecked
here in 1790, so a visit to the Sirius Museum was especially
poignant. An exclusive Farewell Luncheon at Forrester’s Court
provided not only a stunning backdrop, but the First Settlement
story of some of the group’s common ancestor Robert Forrester. In
between the group have chosen a number of tours, activities and
dinners.
From Maria and the Norfolk Island Travel Centre Team we hope
that your week on the Island where your ancestors lived has been a
very special and happy one. We wish you a safe return home and look
forward to welcoming you back to Norfolk Island one day soon.
Senior’s Holiday Travel VisitIt has been wonderful to welcome
this week 25
visitors travelling to Norfolk Island with Seniors Holiday
Travel in conjunction with the Norfolk Island Travel Centre.
Travelling from Sydney and Brisbane and staying at the Paradise
Hotel the group led by tour leader Shelley Rylance has headed out
each day to enjoy a range of tours that have taken them right
across the island.
A definite highlight of the week was being here for Foundation
Day. After enjoying the re-enactment at Emily Bay everyone feasted
on a sumptuous lunch and were entertained not only by the
musicians, but also being served lunch as a convict, by the
Commandants.
Tours during the day have included Pitcairn Settlers Village,
Culla & Co Horse and Carriage ride, Behind the Hedges and
Convict Settlement Tour. In the evenings they’ve enjoyed Drinks
with Paradise Manager and dinner at Hilli’s Restaurant, Fletchers
Fate Mystery Dinner, A Night as a Convict, Progressive Dinner,
Mutiny on the Bounty Show and an Island Fish Fry.
As you travel back home we hope you’ll take many wonderful
memories of your holiday on Norfolk Island – especially including a
wonderful Foundation Day. We wish you a safe journey and hope to
welcome you back one day again.

‘Keeping The Community Informed’
MAYOR UPDATE
Meeting With Air New Zealand In Sydney
’On Monday 6 January, at the invitation of Air New Zealand, the
General Manager and I, accompanied by Ms Jonica Paramor (Unique
Tourism/Norfolk Island Tourism), met in Sydney with representatives
from Air New Zealand – Mr. Richard Thomson, (Group General Manager,
Commercial), Ms Cath O’Brien (Manager Regulatory Affairs), Ms
Kathryn Robertson (Regional General Manager) and Ms Amanda Swallow
(Product and Pricing Manager). Mr. Thomson and Ms O’Brien joined us
from New Zealand,’ Mayor Adams said.
The following matters were placed on the table by ‘the Norfolk
team’ for discussion:• Withdrawal of the Auckland service;•
Re-instatement of the Brisbane Tuesday service in
the low season;• Look at adding a third Brisbane service in the
high
season;• Permanently lock in the Sydney Sunday service in
2018; and• The Norfolk Island Tourism Strategy which
includes the following objectives:o Increase visitor arrivals by
8% in 2017;o Achieve 8% annual growth for the next five
years;o Reach a target of 35,000 visitors by 2020;o Promote the
destination to new audiences in
Australia and New Zealand; ando Improve visitor arrivals in the
low season. The following restructure of Norfolk Island Tourism
was discussed including:• The role of the Norfolk Island
Regional Council;• The increased scope of services to be
provided
by UTC (Unique Tourism Collection) with the marketing function
for both Australia and New Zealand now based in Australia.
Outcomes From DiscussionsAuckland/Norfolk ServiceAir New Zealand
provided background to their
decision to withdraw from the Auckland service. It was made
clear that Air New Zealand would not be reconsidering the decision
to exit this service at this time. Air New Zealand was hopeful that
another carrier, such as Norfolk Island Airlines, would be able to
make a commercial success of the route.
Brisbane Reduced ServicesAir New Zealand acknowledged and
would
continue discussion with us on achieving Norfolk Island’s
tourism priorities and recommendations to continue to grow tourism
at a conservative rate of 8% growth annually, including –a.
Re-instating the Tuesday service ex-BRISBANE
year round; b. Considering current Sunday service – ex-
SYDNEY - year round rather than seasonal.
It was noted that these service options would be subject to
consideration and support of the Department of Infrastructure and
Regional Development.
Freight Air New Zealand would review the issue of the
backlog of freight which continues to be held up in both Sydney
and Brisbane, causing delays of up to 6 weeks or more.
Commonwealth And Air New Zealand Discussions While Air New
Zealand is willing to engage in
future dialogue on achieving the stated priorities; it cannot
commit the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development
(DIRD). That commitment will need to be sought.
Air New ZealandWhile Air New Zealand is not limited from
increasing frequency of services on any of the Australia to
Norfolk Island sectors, it will require consultation and agreement
with DIRD which ultimately has an economic exposure to the
performance of any additional service.
StatisticsAir New Zealand to confirm that they have no
difficulty with releasing to the public the monthly passengers’
numbers provided to Council by Australian Immigration and Border
Protection. A sample copy was provided.
‘The Norfolk team left the meeting feeling positive and
optimistic,’ the Mayor said. ‘I am also confident that Air New
Zealand left the meeting with a clear view of Norfolk’s tourism
priorities and that I speak on behalf of Councillors when I say
that we are committed to building a closer working relationship
with Air New Zealand and other stakeholders moving forward in order
to achieve our objective – namely, to grow Norfolk Island visitor
numbers to 35,000 by 2020.’
‘The General Manager and I thank Air New Zealand for
facilitating what we hope will be regular face to face meetings
with senior management’, the Mayor said, ‘and if the next one can
happen on the Island so much the better’.

Stop Press Letter To Editor Dear Sir, At a community
consultation meeting yesterday
afternoon, delegates from the NSW Department of Family and
Community Services made the announcement that a new Child Welfare
Officer will be arriving on island today to start a 6-month
placement with NIHRACS. This gentleman will be employed full-time
and is receiving a number of attractive incentives to make his stay
with us comfortable.
Now, this could be good news, if we didn’t already have a Child
Welfare Officer appointed in August last year by the Regional
Council through to 25 March. But here’s where it gets
interesting!
I was appointed to the position for 6 months part-time, with no
added incentives at all. On commencement I was given a contract to
sign, setting out terms and conditions of the appointment. This
contract specified that my employer was Lotta Jackson, the General
Manager of Norfolk Island Regional Council. I did not sign that
contract as various clauses were not consistent with the agreements
made prior to me relocating to Norfolk Island, or were ambiguous
and needed to be corrected. Throughout October and November I made
attempts to have Bruce Taylor advise me on the progress of
correcting the contract, to no avail. Nothing was ever corrected
and the contract remained unsigned.
Various other issues arose after that and on 21 February I
received communication from the General Manager advising me that
she had never “sighted” the contract and that it “seems to be an
amended version of a contract for Senior Staff appointed under the
Local Government Act and not applicable to other staff”. I also
received a copy of documentation sent to Payroll, and signed by the
General Manager, that set out the employment conditions that again
didn’t match the agreements made before I commenced or information
given to me at the start of my term by Bruce Taylor.
Efforts over the past seven weeks to get these matters (and
others) sorted by negotiation and mediation – the processes
described in the Regional Council’s Code of Conduct Policy – have
been fruitless. In fact, attempts to have the matter investigated
by the Mayor have been returned to the General Manager to
investigate. This is an interesting response – from now on, we can
turn over investigations of criminal matters to the perpetrators of
the crime. This should save everybody a great deal of time and
expense, and get matters sorted very quickly!
So now I don’t know whether I am employed as Child Welfare
Officer or not since I’ve received no correspondence about this
from the General Manager and she has refused to engage in any
mediation process. But behind the scenes, a new appointment has
been made quietly by NSW, and one wonders with what other
colluders. Certainly representatives of DIRD who have been on
island this week have advised me that anew appointment was made and
indicated that I should have been informed by the General Manager
about arrangements regarding my appointment. The expectation has
also bene made clear that I will happily hand over the reins, and
apparently quietly disappear into the mist as far as my claims with
the Regional Council are concerned (not DIRD’s problem, it seems).
And of course we’ll all be very good Norfolk Islanders and welcome
this person warmly…or is it time to take a stand as a community and
bring corruption out into the open and stop it. Enough is
enough!

Out And About With Artist Jenny Macnaughton
This week we have watercolour artist Jenny MacNaughton from
Dorrigo in NSW, back for her third visit, this time with a group
from Dalby in QLD, Repton, Coff’s Harbour, Nambucca and Moonee
Beach in NSW, and Canberra, in the ACT. The group has been out
painting at Ball Bay Reserve, BedRock, Kingston and in the gardens
at Government House.
Jenny is an exhibiting member of the Royal Art Society of NSW,
The City of Ryde Art Society, The Dorrigo Art Group and Watercolour
Society of Victoria. She conducts adult workshops from her home
studio in Megan and her gallery in Dorrigo. A popular demonstrator
for art societies, she has tutored for the Mitchell School of Arts
at Bathurst, Murrumbidgee School of Creative Arts in Wagga Wagga,
Camp Creative in Bellingen & at the Grafton Artsfest. Jenny has
released two books: “Capturing the Australian Light in Watercolour”
and “Watercolor Flowers Fast Fresh & Free”, and three DVD’s.
Jenny has held many exhibitions in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle,
Rockhampton, Inverell and Dorrigo.
The painting trips, now in their fifth year, are a joint venture
between local resident Barb Kelly and the Norfolk Island Travel
Centre aimed at promoting the island as a land and sea-scape
painting destination They provide a rewarding opportunity for
beginners as well as more advanced painters to capture the beauty
of our island. Painting “en plein air” imbues each work with sun,
salt, and sea breezes. The programme allows ample time for morning
or afternoon sessions and tries to provide a wide range of scenic
locations, favourites being Emily Bay and the Lion’s Club. However,
each group seems to find a previously undiscovered treasure which
we add to our list. It is such a privilege to see the creative
juices flow and artistic talent emerge during the week on the
island.
The painters on location at Ball Bay Reserve. Jenny is front of
easel.

Volunteers ExtraordinaireDon and Sue Brian returned to our
shores,
once again, to offer their time and expertise to the Norfolk
Island Museum. This visit was specifically to undertake the
accessioning process of the objects recovered from the
infrastructure services upgrade of the Double Boatshed,
Blacksmiths’ Compound and areas of Quality Row during 2015 by the
then Commonwealth Heritage Manager, Matt Alexander, archaeologist
Douglas Hobbs and the KAVHA works team.
Our volunteers, Sue and Don, began with the artefacts collected
from excavations at the Double Boatshed and the Blacksmith’s
Compound. Firstly they needed to correlate the data attached to the
objects with the reports to confirm each objects provenance, then
each object or grouping of objects were allocated a Norfolk Island
Museum catalogue number, these numbers were physically recorded
onto the objects, their condition assessed and recorded,
photographs taken and the collection rehoused according to material
types. The details were entered into a spreadsheet and then
uploaded into the museum’s Inmagic Database. A total of 1,150
objects for this project were documented, assessed and entered into
the KAVHA Collection in the
care of the Norfolk Island Museum. A huge task, but this was not
all.
The second stage of their volunteer project was to carry out the
same process for the objects recovered from the 2015 upgrade of the
infrastructure services along the rear of the Quality Row
buildings. Some of these objects may relate to “Irish Town” the
former soldiers garden hut area on the hill above the Old Military
Barracks Compound, the others from a midden that appears to be
dating to the early Pitcairner period, these objects are comprised
mainly of glass and ceramics with some stone, metal and animal
remains.
Two items of particular interest were identified in the bags of
materials which had not been previously noted, one was a worked
flint of the same shape and size as that used on a Short Land
Pattern Musket and the other was a small hallmarked silver piece
which
(continued overleaf)
-
Volunteers Extraordinaire - continuedmay be a button back
provisionally dating to 1792.
This project amounted to 2,829 items being identified,
described, recorded, and accessioned into the Norfolk Island Museum
database as part of the KAVHA collection. All but 900 of these were
individually, physically numbered
prior to being rehoused. Those which were not numbered were bags
of broken bottle glass dating back to the 1920s.
Also, whilst they were on island they kept themselves ‘extra’
busy by tidying up at our museum store, undertaking conservation of
a community owned artefact and installing our precious scrimshaw
and whaling gun into the new Norfolk Pine cabinets within the Pier
Store Museum. We received two new cabinets costing $1,000; they
were donated to the museum by Sue and Don. They also, funded their
own way to Norfolk, however we were able to provide them with
$1,000 as contribution towards their airfares, this $1,000 came
from funds they had donated back to the Museum Trust in 2015 when
they undertook an Audit and Condition Assessment of the Trust’s
collection.
Absolute dynamos to say the least! Thanks must also be offered
to Chris Ciantar and Sorrel Wilby for their support of the Norfolk
Island Museum by providing accommodation, to Lou and Jimbo Tavener
for the car and to Brian Prince the Commonwealth Heritage Manager
for providing the workspace. Thanks to you all from the Norfolk
Island Museum.

Jill, adored wife of Gary (Chooma), beloved mum of Allan and Sam
and mother-in-law of Melanie and Cindy and grannie of Alexandra,
Cody, Zak, Connor, Brooklyn and Emmett, daughter, sister, auntie,
sister-in-law and friend, was laid to rest on Thursday 18 February
2017 in a beautiful plot on the family farm at Kilcoy,
Queensland.
Jill wrote her own eulogy which was read by daughter-in-law
Melanie.
“There are many of you who will find this message and location
very strange, but this is my final wish. I have stood at enough
funerals in the stinking heat and listening to people trying to
struggle their way through eulogies to know that that is not what I
wanted for my final farewell. What is the point in someone standing
up here telling you all about who I am and what I have done in life
when all of you here have known me and been some part of my life’s
journey. In short, I was born Jillian Margaret Tones on 21 March
1956, second daughter of two of the most amazing people I have ever
known – Norman and Valerie Tones. I was blessed to have three
siblings, Dianne, Daniel and Timothy. In June 1977 I married the
love of my life Gary Cooper and we were blessed with two beautiful
sons – sorry boys – handsome sons, Allan and Samuel, two amazing
daughters-in-law, Melanie and Cindy and six special little
grandbabies, Cody, Alexandra, Connor, Zak, Brooklyn and Emmett and
add to that my huge new Norfolk Island family. Family to me has
always been absolutely everything – the most important thing in the
world in fact. It was always my aim to spend as much time as
possible with family, but life never seems to go quite to plan.
What would we do without family? They are such a huge part of our
lives, always there for you in good times and bad.

Jillian Margaret Cooper - continuedI look at my darling mum who
has had to ensure so
much in her, more than I know I could have ever borne, with the
loss of
Tim, watching her dearly beloved husband die one of the cruelest
deaths and then being there and being the most amazing support to
us during my journey.
We unfortunately decided to go into business for ourselves in an
effort to maybe help our family out in the future. In hindsight,
our time would have been better spent with the family as I am sure
they are all capable of doing better things in life than we have
ever managed. We have missed out on so much with firstly our boys
and more recently our grandchildren, but I truly hope that they all
know just how much I love them and have treasured each and every
moment spent with them. My biggest fear when I first started my
chemo treatment was that they would all be “freaked out” by my bald
head but they are truly resilient little creatures. They always
knew when Grannie was feeling too sick to deal with their mischief
and would come and sit or lie beside me, give me a cuddle and pat
my bald head. Money could never buy memories like that. I may not
still be here with you physically but want you to know that I will
always be looking over you and hopefully protecting you from
harm.
As for Choom and my boys and girls, what could I have ever done
without you? Choom, you have been my rock. There have been lots of
times when I would have walked away from it all but you have been
there with me on each and every step of this dreadful journey and
kept encouraging me. You have probably suffered through it all more
than I have as I have always known exactly how I have felt where
you have had to sit there and just watch what is happening and
feeling helpless. I want you to get out there now and spend lots of
time with our grandbabies, play plenty of golf and go on that Barra
fishing trip that we never got to do. Boys, I know I was a “tough
old bird” as you often told me, but I want you to know that this
“tough old bird” absolutely worshipped the ground her two boys
walked on and has always been so very proud of the men you have
become and of your beautiful families. I love you all so very very
much, try to remember my better side – not the cranky old”B” I
could sometimes be. Look after Dad for me and girls please don’t
leave him at the first bus stop, he really is a big softy at
heart.
My Norfolk family, what can I say. So big, so loving, so
special. We might not have had as much time at home on the Island
with you all as we should have but I hope you all realise just how
much you all meant to me – to all of us and what a hugely special
place you have all held in my heart.
I could never in a lifetime be able to thank my circle of
friends, more like extended family really, who have been with me on
my life’s journey and through this last battle. Some of you I have
known most of my life but some have been more recent additions to
my wonderful family. I will not even attempt to name you all but
you know who you are and I hope you know how important you have
been in my life. Thank you for the phone calls, test messages and
emails of
support and of course the hugs and kisses. I am truly blessed to
have been part of your lives and I hope that you will all remain
part of my family’s lives long into the future.
I don’t want anyone to be sad today. For me, life was the joy of
living and spending time with my family and friends. Have a few
drinks, a lot of laughs and continue to all be there for one
another to help one another through. I will be watching over you
and the first one to shed a tear gets a tap on the shoulder or a
boot on the butt. I have loved you all so very much and treasured
every moment I have spent with you all.
I just want to say my final farewell with a little poem my
darling Chooma gave me shortly after we were married as he was sent
off to Malaysia for three months. It goes like this:
Memories keep those we love close to us foreverAlthough words
seem to say so littleI hope they help in some small wayTo ease the
sense of lossThat you’re experiencing todayHold fast to your
memoriesTo all of the cherished moments of the pastThey all add up
to a treasureOf fond yesterdaysAnd keep the one you loveClose to
your heartToday and forevermore”.
Jill’s close friend Janis Morgan gave the following tribute to
Jill:
“As I go through life, I try to learn from people I meet that I
admire. I could of known Jilly for 100 years and not learned
everything she had to teach me. These are some of her many
wonderful qualities that I am in awe of: her kindness; her
generosity; her complete and unwavering devotion to her family; her
humility; her self-effacing attitude; her delight in other
peoples

Jillian Margaret Cooper - continuedsuccess; her sadness when
others suffered, but above
all else, her amazing courage and determination; her always
positive attitude and her fierce will do defy the odds. Like so
many others, I will miss her dreadfully. I could never hope to be a
quarter of a person that she was, but hope to honour her by trying
to emulate some of these wonderful characteristics as I go through
life. I felt so very honoured to have shared Jill’s love, warmth
and friendship and I will always treasure the wonderful memories we
have created over the years. I will carry Jilly in my heart always
and know that she will always be around her beloved family-

The Eulogy was then read by grand daughter Nicola Reeves;-
“Aileen Mavoura Kelly was born in Nightcaps, Otago New Zealand in
1929. She was very premature and fitted into a shoe box, so the
story goes, and placed on the side of the stove to keep her warm.
Her father Jack was a race horse trainer and market gardener,
growing strawberries and tomatoes commercially. Aileen was brought
up in Invercargill and
