And steam can power a locomotive… Just think about it…raising the temperature of water by one extra degree means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine. This natural law reminds us that seemingly small things can make tremendous differences. This law holds true in so much of what we do as members of Niles Rotary. Over the last nine months, I have written about some great examples of what our committees and you as individuals are doing to “Foster Our Passion” this year. Individually, the initiatives may seem small…but what a difference they are making as a whole. Our organization is making great strides this year in the community and globally – you all should be very proud! It is the belief in what we do and how we do it that makes us successful as a group. Belief fuels enthusiasm and enthusiasm fosters passion. This was very evident at our 17 th Annual Reverse Raffle that took place on March 31 st . Under the guidance of President-Elect, Sandra Young, and her hardworking committee the event was an unbelievable success. The tickets for the event sold out early and John Dutra’s team, the Blitz, sold the most tickets at 51. Also, if any of you missed the political buttons that Brian Hughes made for Dick McKay and Bruce Prescott for one of the “friendly” ticket selling competitions, be sure to ask them about the oversized buttons. (See photo on page 5). I would have never believed that Bruce would be joining the Tea Party Movement side by side with Sarah Palin… The event itself was memorable, there were over 400 people in attendance (the second highest attendance ever) and strongly sought after silent and live auction items that often resulted in bidding wars between tables (and between auction spotters Daren and Bubba). Overall the night was a great success. (I have banned my husband from purchasing any more wine…).

April 2012 212 DEGREES

At 211 degrees, water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive… Just think about it…raising the temperature of water by one extra degree means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine. This natural law reminds us that seemingly small things can make tremendous differences. This law holds true in so much of what

we do as members of Niles Rotary. This was very evident at our 17th Annual Reverse Raffle that took place on March 31st. Under the guidance of President-Elect, Sandra Young, and her hardworking committee the event was an unbelievable success. The tickets for the event sold out early and John Dutra’s team, the Blitz, sold the most tickets at 51. From President Kimberly (continued): The funds raised from the event will be given back to the community through the Niles Rotary Club’s annual grant process which will be meeting this month to evaluate the numerous grant applications. If you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact Gary Charland. I also want to thank Steve Landon and Bruce Prescott for all of their hard work this year with the annual Richard King Speech Contest. Not only did we get to listen to some great speeches by students in our area but we also hosted the Area 3 speech contest that went smoothly and many thought the best to date. I was very impressed by how well some of the young people can speak at the podium! Unfortunately, we also said goodbye to a Niles Rotarian and one of our board members, Bob

Highbaugh, who recently moved to Florida. He will be greatly missed along with his tasty home brew. The Board appointed Almos Adjoran to complete Bob’s term and serve as International Chair. Almos will make a great addition to the Board especially given his passion for International projects. I am continually inspired by the work Niles Rotarians are doing on a daily basis. So remember…one degree…one small degree can power the locomotive. Think what you can achieve with one additional degree of effort!

YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING

Did You Know? Our District has a new online training program for all Rotarians who have not already had the Youth Protection Awareness Training. The Awareness Training was last done as a Niles Rotary program several years ago, so we have lots of new members plus some who were not at the May 3, 2007 club meeting when we did the Youth Protection Awareness program (don’t worry, we have a list of who has and has not had the training). We have many youth programs in Rotary, including active involvement in Interact, RYLA, Speech Contest, etc. It is important that we protect our youth from abuse and harrassment. Our District and RI have policies that guide clubs, Rotarians, and all adult volunteers involved with youth in any of our programs. The Youth Protection training is designed to ensure that all adult volunteers are aware of potential problems and how to handle them. Niles Rotarians who have not had the Awareness Training need to complete the Online Youth Protection Awareness Training course, which takes 30-45 minutes. How to complete: Go to the District website (there is a link from our website) and in the Youth Protection Box, after reading the instrructions, click the Online Youth Protection Awareness Training link, which takes you to Youth Protection Awareness for Rotary District 5170. Select our club name, and then click your name to have the course link sent to you, and you are into the course. Complete the training and exam, and then be sure to click Finish or Submit to be sure you get credit for the course. Please let me know if you have any questions. Sandi Pantages, Youth Protection Officer, Niles Rotary
