~ A Return to Grandeur ~
A fascinating look at the story of The Casa Monica,
a 124 year old, elegant, historic building in St. Augustine.
Built in the Gilded Age by Henry Flagler,
The Casa Monica fell into disrepair.
But in 1997 Richard Kessler, a man from Orlando
with a vision and a dream, purchased the building,
embraced its history, restored its original elegance
and kept it on the National Historic Registry.
Geri Ann Evans of the Kessler Collection
carried out extensive historical research
on the building for the owner,
the architects and the interior designers.
Through slides and short stories,
Geri will now share with us the fascinating story
of The Casa Monica.
Gerri Ann Evans
Thank you, thank you, thank you …
to the ladies of the Heathrow Women’s Club
for coming out in full force to support our
Purse Silent and Live Auctions at our February Luncheon Meeting!
Your generosity helped us raise almost $2,500. and didn’t we have fun doing it!
A special thank you to Marie Dayton and Fran Carr for chairing the event, Gayle Jones our outstanding auctioneer, Madelyn Faillaci, Christine Gillen,
Claris Koglin and Clety Gomez for their overall assistance.
This edition of The Newz contains some very important information, so be
sure to read it thoroughly. You will find the slate of proposed officers –
the Board of Directors and the Standing Committee Chairs. We will vote on the slate of officers,
as well as the charities that we will support for 2013-2014, at the April meeting.
The information about our charities for the upcoming year will be in the April edition of The Newz.
~ Dust off your favorite tropical attire for our upcoming benefit, An Evening in Paradise ~ The Ways & Means Committee has been working harder than ever on this year’s event and I can guarantee that
you won’t be disappointed! We have received many fabulous items for our Silent Auction – from dine-around
packages, hotel stays and some fantastic fine jewelry just to name a few! In addition, those attending will enjoy
a fabulous dinner buffet, live entertainment, dancing and the company of good friends. There’s no better way
to experience a great evening while being a part of raising the much needed funds for our deserving charities.
I look forward to celebrating with you at our
“Evening in Paradise” Benefit on April 13th!
My Best, Ellen

Somebody’s Hungry
Non-perishable food will be collected at each monthly meeting … for distribution to local Food Banks.
If you are interested in signing up to deliver the food we collect to a food bank ...
We will assign a specific month to those interested.
If there was one reason that stood out among all the rest in the answers
received to the question of why we love the Heathrow Women’s Club, it was this one. Our members describe moving here, or retiring, or just looking for a new way to meet people, joining the Club, and falling in love: that is the
best way to describe it. Our women friends in HWC have become an essential part of our lives. They are our fami-
lies away from home. They are our social life, either with each other or with our significant others who join us in
activities. They are our support and strength, in good times and bad. Indeed they, we, all of us, are the strength of
the Club. It is not a static group. One member put it succinctly: “I meet a new friend every month.” What a lovely thought! And at the rate we are now growing, that will not be difficult. Or, we may even learn something new about
an old friend!
There were many other reasons expressed, but so many tend to be variations on a theme:
Doing good while having fun. The fundraising and hands-on charitable work are a major reason for loving the Club. And again, doing it all with the women we love to work and play with. As another member explained, “It provides a
worthwhile reason to spend time with my friends.” Doing good while having fun. Socializing with a purpose.
And many other reasons …
Pay it forward: being part of a larger effort to aid others.
Get to know the local community through our charitable efforts.
Give back to the community by supporting our charities.
Showcase the skills we have acquired over a lifetime to benefit others.
Enjoy our great luncheon meetings, social groups, volunteer efforts, day trips, or just lunch with the girls.
Win the raffle basket at the luncheon (perhaps more than once!)
Win the bid on that great purse.
Learn to play bridge, or canasta, or mah jongg, or salsa dancing.
Show off your new clothes, or new purse, at an HWC event.
Enjoy the fruits of others labors at the annual Bake Sale.
Gain notoriety in the community when your picture appears in a publication.
Socialize in many forms, Friday night get-togethers, dine around, or socials at members’ homes.
Benefit from the experiences of others in finding doctors, hairdressers, handymen (or women).
Dance and eat at the annual gala fundraising event.
Run into lots of friends, old and new, while grocery shopping.
And did we mention, the wonderful women of Heathrow Women’s Club?!
As one member put it, quoting that great poet Anonymous,
“A life without friends is like a flower without sun.”
Thanks to the many suggestions of why they love HWC as received from the following: Ellen Yeaser, Madelyn Faillaci,
Lynn Edwards, Eleanor Ziegler, Paula Rubin, Sally Beisler, Toni Curlin, Jo Ann Bloom, Pat Karakoosh, Marie Dayton,

HWC 2013 - 2014 SLATE OF CANDIDATES FOR THE BOARD
The HWC Bylaws require that a Nominating Committee chaired by the Parliamentarian,
select a slate of Candidates for the following year’s Board.
This year’s Nominating Committee consisted of: Martha Halcrow, Gayle Jones, Ellen Yeaser and Sally Beisler.
The selection process for this Committee is defined in the HWC Bylaws.
According to our Bylaws, this Slate is to be introduced to the General Membership in March.
An election will be held at the April General Meeting.
At that time additional nominations may be made from the floor.
Installation of the New Board is conducted at the May General Meeting and a transition Board meeting is held in June.
This January a request for volunteers for the New Board was made at the
January General Meeting and in the February NEWZ. An unprecedented number of qualified volunteers
responded to a member of the Nominating Committee following the announcements.
On behalf of the Board and Membership, I would like to thank all of the volunteers.
The Nominating Committee considered all of the potential Candidates
and presented their proposed Slate to the existing Board. It was unanimously approved.
I am privileged to announce the following Slate of Candidates for the 2013 - 2014 HWC Board.
To all of the Members on this Slate, thank you for your past and future service to the Heathrow Women’s Club.
Sally Beisler , Parliamentarian

On February 5th, a number of ladies from … The Heathrow Women's Club
attended the annual meeting of the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida at the Grand Bohemian Hotel,
where they were honored with the “BE GREAT” award.
This award is given on a very selective basis to organizations, that work over the long term
to inspire children to reach their full potential and to BE GREAT!
The Heathrow Women's Club was one of three organizations in Central Florida to receive this award
– the others being Northern Star Generation and the Celebration Foundation.
This is a wonderful and prestigious honor for The Heathrow Women’s Club!
Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida “BE GREAT” Award

Once again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your generosity
in donating food items to be included in the Bags of Hope.
Moreover, your contributions of books, crayons, games, etc.
for the Children’s Waiting Room is so appreciated.
We are so blessed to have so many giving women in our Club.
BAGS OF HOPE
All is going well with the volunteer program at English Estates.
The children are given fresh fruit in addition to their “bags” each Thursday.
Along those lines, Michelle Du Vall-Rubin has taken it upon herself to be
at the Winn Dixie parking lot every Wednesday morning between 11a.m. to 12 p.m.
She has a white truck and will be in front of the liquor store
if you care to drop off apples, oranges or tangerines.
FRIENDS OF ABUSED CHILDREN
The “Children’s Waiting Room” is up and running as of February 25th.
Volunteers who have been fingerprinted will be chaperoning the young children who are testifying in court on Mondays and Tuesdays between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Volunteer opportunities are open for this Program. It is not necessary for you to come each week.
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
Once again we held a “Cooking Class” for about 36 children on Valentine’s Day.
The children were overjoyed with the menu of heart-shaped grilled cheese sandwiches,
tomato soup, strawberry and chocolate milk and chocolate pudding.
They especially enjoyed decorating their individual pudding cups
and dipping marshmallows in warm melted chocolate.
A big thank you to Joyce Moreno for organizing these classes. Our Club was honored at a Boys and Girls Club regional dinner
at the Grand Bohemian on February 5th for all that we do.
SAFEHOUSE OF SEMINOLE
The ladies were treated to manicures and haircuts in January …
again courtesy of the efforts of Michelle Du Vall-Rubin.
She would like to continue doing this on a monthly basis on the last Monday of each month.
Two or three ladies are needed to assist in this event each month.
Jeanne Gold has put out a request for donations of the following items: Towels, wash cloths, regular size shampoo and conditioner, knitting supplies, headphones (ear-bud size),
baby wipes, adult socks, dress socks and sweat socks, paper products such as plates,
cups and paper towels, plastic utensils, pillows, gas cards in $10 increments, permanent markers,
As all of you know, our major fundraiser this year will be held on April 13th!
The Ways and Means Committee has been busy planning this fabulous event …
An Evening in Paradise
Local celebrity Amy Sweezey has agreed to be our emcee this year and we are so excited to have her!
In addition, we will have a …
Delicious Buffet Dinner, Fire Dancing Show, Music and Dancing,
and an exciting Silent Auction.
Our members and the local business community have really
stepped it up this year, by donating some great items!
There is really something for everyone to bid on.
Please make sure to buy your tickets early as you don’t want to miss this event!
If you would like to sit with someone in particular,
please let Pat Darrah or Judie Rosenbluth know when you purchase your tickets.
They will do their best to accommodate all requests.
“An Evening in
Paradise”
We will be resume our
Basket Raffle in March.
Christina Culbertson
and Eleanor Ziegler

Christine (pictured with her dog, Trouble), is a native Ohioan, born in Akron. She moved
with her parents, as a child to Barberton, Ohio.
There she attended high school, where she met and married her high
school sweetheart. They had one son, Jake, who is 22 and they divorced in 1998. She subsequently met and married her present husband, Jon, in
1999. Christine and Jon lived in Long Beach, N.Y. for nine years before
moving to Florida four years ago and live in Lakeside in Heathrow.
She has a B.A. in Philosophy and Pre-Law from Molloy and a Masters
degree in Accounting and Finance. Christine was a banker for almost 20
years, although she took some time off when her son was in junior high
and high school. She started in banking as a teller in a small community bank and worked her way up through the ranks. All the while she was
working full time she also was going to school at night. At the end of her
banking career she was senior vice president in charge of branch opera-
tions, risk management and mortgage lending. While Christine and Jon
lived in New York she was head of consumer lending at a local bank.
After a few years, Christine decided to leave the bank and concentrate on finishing her education, which she did, and also became interested in going to law school. At that point, fate stepped in with a diagnosis of an auto-
immune disease, for which stress is an enemy, so the law school idea had to be discarded. She had already been
accepted to a law school on Long Island, but after losing a kidney and spending a month in and out of the hospital
she began to take life easier. Christine diagnoses herself as a type A personality and knows how unusual people
who know her now find that idea. She learned some valuable life lessons when this disease appeared. The things she once thought were important, she now realizes are not. The important things in life are not one’s career and
all the accomplishments. She has learned to slow down and not take life so seriously.
Christine sold real estate for a short time, but then Jon was transferred to Florida. Their house in New York sold
in three weeks and they found their house in Heathrow very quickly. Things just fell into place. She was in the
process of sitting for her CPA license when she was offered the opportunity to open her own travel agency,
Lake Mary Cruise Planners – cruise and land specialist. She and Jon love to travel so she thought, “why not?” and the rest is history. They have traveled over much of the world, swimming with sharks in Bora Bora and other
adventures. She says she tells people she is the best educated travel agent they’ll ever meet.
Becoming a member of HWC is one of the best things Christine has done since moving here. She says she gets
much more out of being a member of Women’s Club than she could ever put into it. Christine has put herself in
the middle of the activities, learning as she goes and is passing on that knowledge to others in turn. Christine cur-
rently serves as Co-Chair of the HWC Ways & Means Committee.
