Education and the Fully Alive Human Being by Father Thomas N. Smith The human being, the image of God, shares in the intelligence of the Creator. This means, among other things, that we are capable of creative thought, emotion, and action. While intelligence in individuals varies greatly, all of us, except for the severely challenged, enjoy a measure of this divine gift. The role of education is the formation of this gift. This formation takes the form of information, correction, and the making of correspondences and contrasts between that information and correction. This, in turn, leads to a revision of our thoughts and convictions. For example, at an early age we learn that cows and sheep are animals, but that cows are not sheep. But, as our formation grows, we learn of bison and big horned sheep and we discern a likeness between the bison and the cow and the sheep and the big horn, while recognizing distinctive differences. Education and the Fully Alive Human Beingby Father Thomas N. Smith

The human being, the image of God, shares in the intelligence of the Creator.

And, on and on….

There are seven basic areas where this formation/education takes place:

Analytical IntelligenceThe formation of the analytical mind begins in infancy with such things as "mama/papa," "up/down," "hot/cold," "yes/no," etc. We move from that to such things as counting to ten, saying or singing our ABCs, naming things, and other skills.continued on page 2

continued from page 1 These are decidedly left brain skills. On these foundations, simple arithmetic, spelling, memorization of dates and poems, and other things can be built.  This leads to the Grammar Stage of the ancient trivium. Math, vocabulary, grammar, syntax, scientific data and formulae- all are developed and formed here. This is a part of the formation of intelligence into analytical intelligence. We could add a list of activities under this head: the use and care of firearms, learning to play a musical instrument, playing board games and putting together jigsaw puzzles, learning tennis or golf- even learning to ride a bike. Each of these things teaches a host of analytical skills. This becomes the foundation of higher and more complex analytical skills.

Aesthetic IntelligenceThe earliest aesthetic experience may be a warm bath, nursing at the breast, or a mother's lullaby. From there, the child is surrounded by a world "infused with the grandeur of God." All five senses are engaged and must be informed and directed by the parent and teachers. Underlying that instruction is another trivium: the good, the true, and the beautiful. The young human is instructed in good/bad, true/false, and beautiful/ugly. This is where the information/correction/revision process spoken of earlier comes into play. (Perhaps the most basic aesthetic experiences come in tastes and smells- basic and memorable.) So the child is formed by the good, true, and beautiful and learns to compare these realities with their opposites. I am not talking simply and exclusively about what are called "the Arts" (though they are included), but about the whole experience of the sensuous world. As we develop and are formed aesthetically, we become capable of enjoying all things, from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Moral IntelligenceThe human critter is a moral critter. From his earliest development he manifests a moral self capable of judgments, guilt, shame, and moral superiority. No one who has raised or taught small children will question this. What is the basis of the moral formation of the child. The Christian answer is: the Law of God. Thus, we are keen to teach the child the Ten Commandments from the earliest stage of his development. This is the duty of parents and god-parents in our baptismal vows. As the child grows the Commandments can be "unpacked" of their other moral

implications. In adolescence, the Seven Virtues and the Seven Deadly Sins are marshalled to aid in this moral development. Counsel, direction, encouragement, correction, and example- all given in love and commitment to the child-are the glue that helps to secure this formation.

Spiritual IntelligenceThe formation of the spiritual intelligence of the human person is summarized in the Ministration of Holy Baptism in the Book of Common Prayer.  The vow is taken to teach the baptized child the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. This is an exquisite summary of the requirements of the spiritual life. It teaches us what we are to believe about God: the Creed. It teaches us to worship and depend upon God: The lord’s Prayer. It teaches us what God requires of us in our duty to him and to others: the Ten Commandments. In a nutshell: Faith, Worship, Obedience. Now, these with time can be fleshed out with an emphasis  on the Seven Cardinal and Theological Virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Temperance, Faith, Hope, and Love). A human being aware of and practicing these things will be alive to the Triune God and to those around him. He will also be fully alive to himself.

Emotional IntelligenceEmotional intelligence involves  self awareness and self control. These are especially essential in dealing with the corrosive effects of morbid guilt, shame, and fear. That there is a healthy guilt, shame, and fear is incontestable (despite the consensus of certain secular therapies). But a morbid guilt, shame, and fear alienates the self from the self and produces obsessions, deception, and animosity. The formation of healthy attitudes of guilt, shame, and fear and their concomitants: forgiveness, affirmation, and trust are essential to a full and happy life and the formation of the human soul. The role of proper parenting and teaching in the context of warm personal relationships is essential here. Trust, acceptance, and affirmation lead to personal emotional intelligence and mental health.

Social IntelligenceSocial intelligence is learned in society. And that means, first and foremost, within the family. It is in the family that the basic rules, manners, and mores of social interaction are learned. When this fails, they must be learned in school andcontinued on page 7

continued from page 2and Church. In these contexts, we learn such  things as "Share with your sister," "You don't  say that," "Say "Please" and "Thank you," and other basic social norms. These translate and transfer to other social requirements.  We become civil and civilized. In a culture that is more and more self-centered, self-expressive, and self-absorbed-and brutalized, the need for social intelligence and education is obvious. The challenge we face in this matter is great but the rewards are inestimable.

Material IntelligenceBy this I mean an informed awareness of the material world as God has made it and as man has improved it. It is an intelligence that prizes materiality. "God likes stuff, He invented it." C.S.Lewis. Material intelligence also involves the valuing of work. This may be artistic labor or common, every-day, house-hold and garden  labor, factory labor, or intellectual labor. Material intelligence involves an understanding of materials, the materials of the earth: stone, wood, metal, etc, It also involves an appreciation of tools: what they are and how they work.  Finally, material intelligence enriches the human person by enabling him to see and appreciate the achievements of the skilled man or woman who uses tools on material things to transform and improve human life and enjoyment. When the child is taught to do these things, the satisfaction and self esteem experienced knows no bounds.

These are constituent elements of education, the formation of human intelligence, as I see it. This is what we are about at the St Timothy School.  And, may I say, this is what we should all be about in our ongoing lives.  This is the way to be fully human. To be fully alive. For as Saint Irenaeus reminds us, "The human being fully alive is the glory of God."

Those who navigate a ship must watch all the more carefully the farther they move from shore. Then they can see signs of coming storms. When small storms come, the ship can ride over them in a straight path. If storms swell up violently, navigators must avoid them by steering sideways. They often watch alone when everyone else not in charge of the ship is resting. . . . But if the power of the Holy Spirit breathes on an afflicted mind, what was done physically for the Israelites takes place spiritually

in us. For it is written, “But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea.” And the prophet of the Lord promises, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee.” The rivers flood on those whose minds are shaken up by the world’s activity. But those whose minds are persistent by the Holy Spirit’s grace pass through the water and aren’t flooded by the

rivers. This is because such people move along in the midst of crowds but don’t sink the head of their minds beneath the activity of the world.
