The Westgate School hosted our first ever Slough
Young Ambassador Conference to around 50 budding
young leaders from across the borough.
Young people from eight different schools in
Slough attended from Year 10 to Year
12 (Schools included: Arbour Vale,
Herschel Grammar, Langley Grammar,
Long Close, St Bernards, St Josephs,
Westgate and Wexham).
The day was delivered in
partnership with our awesome
partners Mars in the Community and
Create Development providing a
great afternoon of skill development,
character building and also
developing those vital personal skills
to get yourself ‘above the rest’ when
applying to university or the
workplace.
The day was opened by the truly
inspiring Rion Pierre a current GB sprinter who
took our young people on a journey of
overcoming adversity, making the most of
any opportunity that comes your way and
knowing what success really means to
you...some vital life lessons to be heard!
The day then kicked into a whole
group work-shop
with Create
Development
Director, Tim
Dancer who took
the young people
through the principles of real Coaching, supporting
them to gain a deeper understanding of developing
the child and to align coaching habits in order to
develop a truly child centred approach.
Our leaders were then
separated into two groups and went
off to explore 'developing your
communication, the power of
language' delivered by real Coaching
tutor Jason Elwell and also 'setting
yourself above the rest' delivered by
the SSSN and Lorna Catling from
MARS.
Lorna took the young people
through sample CV's, covering letters
and what to do and not do in terms of

them through opportunities out there to work in
the world of sport being it in marketing, PR, event

England arrived at Twickenham on Saturday 19th
November on an unbeaten run stretching back to the
last game of the World Cup against Uraguay. This was
as well as an unbeaten 6 Nations tournament this year,
when they completed the ‘Grand Slam’ to be crowned
Kings of the northern hemisphere.
Since then England had gone on to beat
Australia three times in Australia and ran in 37 points
while beating a South African team the previous week.
15 Ditton Park Academy students arrived at
Twickenham on the same day with very little
experience of watching professional sport, let alone an
82,000 sell out at Twickenham, the expectations were
very high from the boys. With Fiji causing Australia,
Wales and England some trouble in the World Cup, a
close game could be expected.
The first experience was seeing the Fiji team up
close as they got off their team bus, to say some of the
players were big would be an understatement, they
Ditton Park take on TwickenhamDitton Park take on Twickenham
looked like man mountains, one student commented:
“Oh My God, they are enormous,
they’re even bigger than you sir”
(Referring to the teacher who happens to be an ex
professional rugby player!)
After a few trips to the various food retailers,
we took our seats only 20 or so rows back from the
field of play. The game started quickly and England had
scored five tries within the first 26 minutes. Fiji rallied
in the run up to half time scoring two tries and another
came shortly after half time to make it 34-15, another
score from Fiji and it could be game on. The big come
back was not to be however, with England going on to
secure a 37-21 victory and looking comfortable in doing
so .
We headed back to Slough after a very
enjoyable day, with some newly engaged England
Rugby fans, hopefully a trip we can do a few more
times next year.
The timeline for School Games Mark for the 2016/17 academic year, is as
follows:
Wednesday 04 January – 2016/17 School Games Mark Criteria Launched
Easter 2017 – Guidance document published for both SGOs and Schools
Wednesday 31 May – Application Window Opens
Friday 28 July – Application Window Closes
Friday 15 September – SGO Verifications to be completed
Please note that all SIRC external validation visits - either face to face or remote - must be completed prior to

There will be some slight amends to the criteria for 2016/17 as there have been in previous years to make the

Being part of the Berkshire Young
Coaches Academy involves learning
to be a holistic coach, who puts
control into the hands of the child
while having a growth mind-set in
relation to both my own and the
child's development.
After attending two
modules so far, myself and four
other Young Coaches from Sough
have been introduced to the
influence and importance of a
coach, the key values of a 'real
coach', the development of
fundamental skills and the need to
challenge and support the whole
child, not just their physical aspects.
During the modules we
have been shown why it is
important to focus on general
fundamental skills at a young age
rather than sport specific activities
and have been given access to
resources from 'real Coaching' to
take into our own coaching
sessions.
These resources include
warm-up games, activity cards for
coaches and the participating
children and posters for each of the
6 cogs – physical, creative, cognitive,
health and fitness, personal and
social, explaining how we can
develop each element of the child
to improve them as a rounded
individual.
I am enjoying this
programme as it has opened my
eyes to the impact of a coach and
the significance of learning basic
fundamental skills – agility, balance
and coordination, in order to create
opportunities to participate and
compete in a range of sports.

This term, we at Priory School welcomed Hannah
Macleod, Olympic Gold Medallist, to officially open our
new running track. Hannah spent time inspiring our
children at our official Daily Mile Launch. She captured
the imagination of the children by talking about her
experiences and proudly showing her Olympic gold
medal. She also told the children of the importance of
trying to be the best you can be both in and out of the
classroom.
As a school we have invested in the health and
wellbeing of our children by building a purpose built
