PERSPECTIVES

Bridges for regional and

national development

* Oppose those relying on external elements, acting as stooges, holding negative views* Oppose those trying to jeopardize stability of the State and progress of the nation* Oppose foreign nations interfering in internal affairs of the State* Crush all internal and external destructive elements as the common enemy

People’s Desire

Ayeyawady Division is a region where there

are many rivers and creeks. Therefore, in the

past, the people there had to rely on the waterway

as a means of transport. Now, the government is

building river-crossing bridges and up to now it

has built 48 bridges more than 180 feet long.

The Head of State has given guidance on

construction of a network of 10 highways in the

storm-hit areas in Ayeyawady Division. On 9

January, Yazudaing Birdge (2) on the Maubin-

Yaylegalay-Shwetaunghmaw-Kyaikpi-

Mawlamyinegyun section of No (1) highway was

opened.

As Mawlamyinegyun is situated on an island,

it had to depend on the waterway for

transportation. Now, with the opening of

Yazudaing Bridge (2), the people there can travel

easily to Shwetaunghmaw, Kyaikpi and

Mawlamyinegyun.

In addition to motor roads, railways are

being built in Ayeyawady Division. One is an 87-

mile-long railroad that will link Pathein, Darka,

Einme, Pantanaw, Nyaungdon, Hlinethaya and

Yangon and another one is a 48-mile-long

railroad that will link Hinthada, Zalun, Danubyu

and Nyaungdon. Therefore, the people in

Ayeyawady Division will be able to travel to

other regions by boat or by car or by train.

The government is building the transport

infrastructure necessary for development of the

economic, social, education and health sectors.

Therefore, we would like to call on the people in

Ayeyawady Division as well as in the entire

Union to work in concert with the government

for regional and national development.

LONDON, 11 Jan — An Australian World War II hos-pital ship, the Centaur, has been seen for the first timesince it sank more than 60 years ago with a loss of268 lives.

Images of the wreck, more than 2km (1.3 miles)below the sea, were captured by a remote-controlledunderwater camera.

The ship’s location was discovered last month fol-lowing a hi-tech search.

Australia says the ship, which went down in May1943, was torpedoed by the Japanese. Japan says thecircumstances surrounding its sinking are unclear.

The search team found the ship on 20 Decemberoff the Queensland coast, about 30 miles due east ofthe southern tip of Moreton Island.

Favourable conditions allowed the crew to senddown a camera on a remotely-operated submersiblevehicle over the weekend. Further dives are planned.

ANCHORAGE, 11 Jan —A 27-year study of polarbears in the southernBeaufort Sea showedthem spending more timeon land and open water asice disappeared, officialssaid.

Between 1979 and1987, 12 percent of bearsightings were associatedwith no ice. Between 1997

As sea ice disappeared, more bears were seen nearshore in the southernBeaufort Sea, Rode said in

LOS ANGELES, 11 Jan—Researchers have found asnowballing effect in theAlzheimer’s disease andare proposing early pre-ventive treatment for ef-fectiveness.

The findings of thestudy, conducted by theNew York University’sLangone Medical Centre, was published in the Janu-ary issue of the Alzheim-er’s & Dementia journal.

The study, involving213 adults with and with-

out subjective cognitiveimpairment (SCI) over anaverage of seven years, found that 54 percent ofthe SCI adults had aggra-vated into mild cognitiveimpairment (MCI) andeven full-blown dementia,or long-term memory loss.

The study also foundthat only 15 percent of thenon-SCI adultshad devel-oped MCI or dementia.

“The findings indicatethat a significant percent-age of people with earlysubjective symptoms mayexperience further cogni-tive decline, whereas fewpersons without thesesymptoms decline.

“If decline does occurin those without SCIsymptoms, it takes consid-erably longer than forthose with subjective cog-

nitive symptoms,” saidBarry Reisberg, lead re-searcher at the LangoneMedical Centre.

“This is the first studyto use mild cognitive im-pairment as well as de-mentia as an outcome cri-terion to demonstrate theoutcome of SCI as a pos-sible forerunner of even-tual Alzheimer’s disease,”the lead researcher added.

Researchers can nowhopefully work out poten-tial preventive therapy ofthe eventual Alzheimer’sdisease, popularly knownas the senile dementia, as“these intriguing resultsmore fully describe thepossible relationship be-tween early signs ofmemory loss and develop-ment of more serious im-pairment.” —Xinhua

“I can’t imagine a betterway to reuse the facility,”Bill Ford said during hisvisit to the former WixomAssembly plant in Septem-ber. Several months later, aplan that exists only on pa-

per is still awaiting final ap-proval. The plant is still va-cant, just like scores of othercavernous auto factoriesacross the nation that havenever been redeveloped.

An Associated Pressanalysis illustrates thescope of the problem: Of128 manufacturing plantsin North America closedsince 1980 by the DetroitThree automakers andtheir largest suppliers, three of every five now sitidle. At their peak, theseroaring engines of eco-nomic activity employed

hundreds of thousands ofpeople, mostly well-paidunion members on the as-sembly line and white-col-lar engineers in windowedoffices above the factoryfloor. Those 128 plants hada payroll of 196,000 work-ers at the time they closed.Today, only 36,500 peoplework at those sites thathave been redeveloped, and at only three of the re-vived plants does thenumber of employeesmatch or exceed thenumber in their carmakingpast.—Internet

CHICAGO, 11 Jan—Anew study has found thatfive times as many highschool and college stu-dents are dealing withanxiety and other mentalhealth issues than youth ofthe same age who werestudied in the Great De-pression era.

The findings, culledfrom responses to a popu-lar psychological question-naire used as far back as1938, confirm whatcounselors on campuses

nationwide have long sus-pected as more studentsstruggle with the stresses ofschool and life in general.“It’s another piece of thepuzzle — that yes, this doesseem to be a problem, thatthere are more young peo-ple who report anxiety anddepression,” says JeanTwenge, a San Diego StateUniversity psychology pro-fessor and the study’s leadauthor. “The next questionis: what do we do about it?”

Though the study, re-

leased on Monday, doesnot provide a definitivecorrelation, Twenge andmental health profession-als speculate that a popu-lar culture increasingly fo-cused on the external —from wealth to looks andstatus — has contributedto the uptick in mentalhealth issues. Pulling to-gether the data for thestudy was no small task.Led by Twenge, research-ers at five universitiesanalyzed the responses of77,576 high school or col-lege students who, from1938 through 2007, tookthe Minnesota MultiphasicPersonality Inventory, orMMPI. — Internet

Chemical fears over plastic productsCANBERRA,11 Jan — The consumer group Choice on Monday urged the

Australian food industry to phase out plastics containing potentially harmfulchemicals.

It said there is an urgent need to label products such as cling wrap and babyproducts that may contain the chemical bisphenol A.

“PVC (an amorphous plastic) is used to make the gaskets that seal glass jarsused for foods such as pasta sauces,” Choice spokesman Christopher Zinn said.

“There are safer alternatives, which should be used instead.”“There is vigorous debate about the various risks.”“Choice believes the evidence, while far from conclusive, can no longer

beignored.”Many retailers still use PVC cling wrap to package meat and other produce,
