In pursuit of the goal of building apeaceful, modern and developed nation, thegovernment focuses special attention on thedrive for improving the living status of thepeople.

In the process, the government is tryingits best for extensive reclamation of fallowlands and speeding up utilization offarmlands by harnessing the naturalresources in the most efficient way.Furthermore, it has placed greateremphasis on boosting agriculturalproduction for food security, one of thebasic needs of the people.

From 1988 to 2008-2009, the nation’stotal sown acreage rose from 19.9 millionto 29.32 million; utilization of farmlands,to 56.9 million acres; and the output ofpaddy, the staple food, from 631 million to1561 million baskets.

The dams, river pumping stations andunderground water tapping stations thegovernment has constructed across thenation for supply of irrigation water benefitmore than 3.6 million acres of farmlands.

With development in the agriculturalsector, the government is boosting productionof agricultural machinery and tools totransform the nation from conventional tomechanized farming. In order to expeditethe drive, it not only manufactures tractors, combine harvesters, and winnowers but alsoprovides agricultural equipment that can beused in combination with tractors, along withploughs, harrows, paddy reapers and trailers.

Therefore, agricultural machineryshould be operated at full capacity in orderthat farmers can save time and energy andboost agricultural production all the more.

Oil rises above $80 as regional stocks gain

Car makers emerge from gloom intoGeneva glitz

WASHINGTON, 1 March—Snowstorms have re-peatedly battered parts ofthe United States this win-ter, making it more diffi-cult to discern returningweakness in the economyfrom seasonal distortions.

That means key USdata on jobs and manufac-turing for February, whichhold big implications forglobal financial markets, could lead to a befuddledreaction from investors.

Confusion will alsolikely reign in Europewhere fears aboutGreece’s financial situa-tion, potentially exacer-bated by speculative ac-tivity in bond markets, have kept the euro zone’ssingle currency underpressure.

China, a growing con-tributor to the global eco-nomic outlook, will re-lease a business sentimentsurvey, which analystsexpect to slip for a second

month as the countrytightens credit.

But the major indica-tor to watch is employ-ment since it has a directeffect on the consumerspending that powers two-thirds of the world’s larg-est economy.

The forecasting rangeis unusually wide, but me-dian projections point toa loss of 50,000 jobs inFebruary. The jobless rateis seen ticking back up to9.8 percent after a Janu-ary decline.

“Everybody who’sthinking the economy isheading for a double dip(recession) is going to saythis is evidence of that, and every one saying theeconomy is doing finewill dismiss it because ofthe weather,” said BobBarbera, chief economistat the Investment Tech-nology Group in NewYork.

SINGAPORE, 1 March— Oil pricesrose above $80 a barrel Monday in Asiaas crude traders followed regional stockmarkets higher.

Benchmark crude for April deliverywas up 56 cents to $80.22 a barrel atmidday Singapore time in electronictrading on the New York Mercantile Ex-change.

The contract added $1.49 to settle at$79.66.

Oil traders, who often look to equi-ties as a measure of overall investor sen-timent, were cheered by a jump in allthe major Asian stock indexes Monday

amid recent signs that Asian manufac-turing is recovering from last year’sslump.

This week, investors will be eyeingUS jobs data to get a better sense of therecovery in the world’s largest economy.

The Labour Department is scheduledto announce February’s unemploymentrate on Friday. Joblessness was 9.7 per-cent in January.

Oil prices have touched the low $80level several times in the last six months, but fallen back into the $70s when UScrude inventory data failed to justify in-vestor optimism.—Internet

GENEVA, 1 March —Car makers will emergefrom the gloom of 2009by presenting about 100new models at the Genevamotor show over the com-ing week, hoping to coun-ter uncertainty by wooingdrivers with dreams,“downsizing” anddiscounts.“The mood ismuch better than last year;in 2009 it was the end ofthe world,” explainedFrank Schwope, an ana-lyst at German bank

NordLB.“Now there’s hope of

a recovery in the industry, not in Europe but in Chinaand the United States,” hetold AFP.

Despite this, the Euro-pean market risks a slumpparticularly in the secondhalf of the year, whentrade-in schemes whichpropped up the market in2009, end or are cut back.

This year’s show istaking place in the back-drop of the troubles en-

gulfing the world’s big-gest auto maker Toyota, which was forced to recallsome nine million carsworld-wide.

In this uncertainty, carmakers are churning outnew models and conceptsin a bid to entice buyers.

The Risk of BPA in Pregnant MomsTEXAS, 1 March—

Studies done at the Uni-versity of Texas MedicalBranch at Galvestonshow that Bisphenol A(BPA), a chemical oftenfound in baby bottles andthe lining of aluminumcans, may lead to allergyrelated asthma. Produc-tion of the chemicalstarted about 40 yearsago, a timing that scien-tists note coincides withincreasing asthma rates.

Tests on BPA havebeen done on lab mice. The researchers found themice born to mothers ex-posed to 10 micrograms

of BPA developed airwayproblems while mice bornto mothers exposed to lowor no BPA did not developthe problem. These testsshow a significant enoughincrease in allergy relatedasthma that some stateshave begun banning thechemical in containersthat could be used by chil-dren under the age of four.Scientist believe that thisstudy is a good exampleof what could happen tohumans, but they admitthat mice studies are notalways accurate in peo-ple.

The next step in this

study will be to determinehow much BPA and howoften it is given beforethese problems are preva-lent. Since there are othercontributing factors inwhat causes asthma, sci-entist are planning on ex-tracting cord blood in hu-mans for their research. These subjects will bewatched for a period oftime to see if they developAsthma. Groups will bebased on their level ofBPA exposure. This typeof study will take years, but will certainly be moreconclusive than the miceexperiment.—Internet

Obese children showsigns of heart disease

Gene test aid tocancer treatment

LONDON, 1 March —Developed a gene test whichpredicts how well chemotherapy will work in cancerpatients. Starting with 829 genes in breast cancer cells, the team whittled down the possibilities to six geneswhich had an impact on whether a drug worked. Theythen showed that these genes could be used to predictthe effectiveness of a drug called paclitaxel in patients.

It is hoped the approach, reported in The Lancet On-cology, can be replicated for other cancers and treat-ments. The international project, including researchersfrom Cancer Research UK’s London Research Insti-tute, opens the way for breast cancer treatment to betargeted to those who will benefit the most.—Internet

CHICAGO, 1 March—The odds of obesity appearstacked against black andHispanic children startingeven before birth, pro-vocative new research sug-gests. The findings helpexplain disproportionatelyhigh obesity rates in mi-nority children. Family in-come is often a factor, butso are cultural customs andbeliefs, the study authors

said. They examined morethan a dozen circum-stances that can increasechances of obesity, and al-most every one was morecommon in black and His-panic children than inwhites. Factors includedeating and sleeping habitsin infancy and early child-hood and mothers smok-ing during pregnancy

In a separate, equally

troubling study, research-ers found signs of inflam-mation in obese childrenas young as 3 years old.High levels were morecommon in blacks andHispanics. These inflam-matory markers have beenlinked with obesity inadults and are thought toincrease chances for devel-oping heart disease.

Internet

LONDON , 1 March —Young as three years oldshow signs of future heartdisease, say US research-ers. study of 16,000 chil-dren and teenagersshowed the most obesehad signs of an inflamma-tory marker which canpredict future heart dis-ease. 40% of obese three-to-five-year olds hadraised levels ofC-reactive proteincompared with 17% ofhealthy weight children,Pediatrics reported.

But more work isneeded to prove the linkwith heart disease in laterlife. The study, carried outby a team at the Universityof North Carolina (UNC),looked at children agedone to 17. Overall, nearly70% were a healthyweight, 15% were over-weight, 11% were obeseand 3.5% were very obese. In the older age groups, theproportion of those in thevery obese category withhigh levels of C-reactiveprotein (CRP) increasedeven further. By age 15-17, 83% of the very obesehad increased CRP com-pared with 18% of thehealthy weight children.CRP is found in the blood, and high levels are a signof inflammation in thebody. Because the damageseen in heart disease iscaused by inflammationin artery walls, CRP canbe used as a generalmarker for the risk ofheart disease.—Internet

CHICAGO, 1 March —One in four US parentsbelieves some vaccinescause autism in healthychildren, but even manyof those worried aboutvaccine risks think theirchildren should be vacci-nated. Most parents con-tinue to follow the adviceof their children’s doctors, according to a studybased on a survey of1,552 parents. Extensiveresearch has found noconnection between au-tism and vaccines.

“Nine out of 10 par-ents believe that vaccina-tion is a good way to pre-vent diseases for theirchildren,” said lead au-thor Dr. Gary Freed of theUniversity of Michigan.“Luckily their concerns

don’t outweigh their deci-sion to get vaccines sotheir children can be pro-tected from life-threaten-ing illnesses.”

In 2008, unvaccinatedschool-age children con-tributed to measles out-breaks in California, Illi-nois, Washington, Ari-zona and New York, saidDr Melinda Wharton ofthe US Centers for Dis-ease Control and Preven-tion. Thirteen percent ofthe 140 who got sick thatyear were hospitalized.“It’s fortunate thateverybody recovered,”Wharton said, noting thatmeasles can be deadly.“If we don’t vaccinate, these diseases will comeback.”
