THE COLLECT - Proper 17 (Page 177 BCP) Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the first reading Jeremiah complains to the Lord

about the pain and difficulties of his mission. He then receives God’s answer.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Mavis Kellman 9:15a.m. - Gay Griffith

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Jeremiah 15:15-21

O LORD, thou knowest; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In thy forbearance take me not away; know that for thy sake I bear reproach. Thy words were found, and I ate them, and thy words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I am called by thy name, O LORD, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of merrymakers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because thy hand was upon me, for thou hadst filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Wilt thou be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail? Therefore thus says the LORD: "If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, says the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless."

REFLECTION THE PSALM: A plea for justice by one who serves the Lord well.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 26 (7:30a.m. - Page 498 BCP)

1. BE THOU my judge, O Lord, for I have walked innocently : my trust hath been also in the Lord, therefore shall I not fall. 2. Examine me, O Lord, and prove me : try out my reins and my heart. 3. For thy loving-kindness is ever before mine eyes : and I will walk in thy truth. 4. I have not dwelt with vain persons : neither will I have fellowship with the deceitful. 5. I have hated the congregation of the wicked : and will not sit among the ungodly. 6. I will wash my hands in innocency, O Lord : and so will I go to thine altar. 7. That I may shew the voice of thanksgiving : and tell of all thy wondrous works. 8. Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house : and the place where thine honour dwelleth. 9. O shut not up my soul with the sinners : nor my life with the blood-thirsty. 10. In whose hands is wickedness : and their right hand is full of gifts.

Page 3: The new fisherman august 31st, 2014

11. But as for me, I will walk innocently : O deliver me, and be merciful unto me. 12. My foot standeth right : I will praise the Lord in the congregations.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this lesson Paul urges the Christians in Rome

to devote themselves to God’s service and to recognize that, with different functions,

they are all members of one body.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - David Yearwood 9:15a.m. - Violet Griffith

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: Romans 12:1-8

I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I bid every one among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith which God has assigned him. For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

GRADUAL HYMN - 509

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel reading Jesus teaches Peter and the

other disciples that the way of his ministry and theirs is the way of the cross. Peter had

just confessed Jesus to be the Christ, but now he cannot accept the idea of the Christ

being put to death. Jesus calls Peter Satan because his words represent a temptation to

him. Jesus’ way cost no less than everything and leads to the discovery of that which is

priceless. In the end the Son of Man will come as judge to repay all people for what they

have done.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21-27

From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, "God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you." But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men." Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man, if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay every man for what he has done.

Bidding Prayer

For the suffering in the Church and in the world, let us pray to the Lord.

Give grace to the Church to show forth the death of our Lord, to follow where he leads and proclaim his salvation…Give courage and strength to all ministers of the gospel when

their burdens are heavy.

Forgive the greed for the material wealth that damages many lives in the world…Have pity on all who are in misery through their own selfishness or by the indifference of those who rule them…Bring them into the way of service and salvation.

In our daily pilgrimage may we bear with gladness both the troubles that come to us and the little things which tempt us to impatience…As we see Christ in all things, may we bring his light to all whose way through this world is joined with ours.

Have mercy on those who bear the heavy crosses of sickness or poverty, of loneliness or bereavement…Bless and relieve all who suffer contempt and persecution for the faith they profess.

We pray for those who having laid aside their burdens have seen the son of Man in his glory as Son of God and are with him for ever…Give us grace so to follow his Cross in this world that we may at last enter into eternal life.

We pray in the name of Christ who has bourne our sins and our sorrows. Amen.

ANNIVERSARY

Smile: Bernard, who is noted for his gracious manners, was awakened one morning at four forty four a.m. by his ringing telephone. . . "Your dog's barking, and it's keeping me awake," said an angry voice. Bernard thanked the caller and politely asked his name and number before hanging up. The next morning at precisely four forty four a.m., Bernard called his neighbor back. "Good morning, Mr. Williams.... Just called to say that I don't have a dog."
