Dear Friends, In mid-September I had a long-anticipated operation on my right foot. I wasn’t looking forward to it, but it had to

be done. I’m very grateful for the gift of medical science that allowed for a new procedure—and I’m equally grateful to many of you who prayed, sent cards and checked in with me by email. Thank you to the “Flower Power” ministry who on the day of the surgery brought flowers to my front door—reminding me of the warm and wonderful Christian community of which I am a part. My foot is healing well so far, and I look forward to getting back into regular shoes again in a few months—but more than that, I look forward to running around the yard with my kids and just playing.

On other news—the ocean front clergy representing the different de-nominations, have decided once again to hold an ecumenical Thanks-giving service. It will be held this year on Tuesday, November 21st at 7 pm, at First Presbyterian on 35th and Pacific. Additionally, we will have a short Eucharist at Galilee (in Saint Andrew’s chapel) at 11 am on Thanksgiving Day.

For years Galilee has enjoyed a beautiful rose garden, just outside our north main doors. The garden was the result of many weekly hours of dedicated from a local rose expert, Mr. How-

ard Jones. Although I never had a hand in pruning, fertilizing or watering the roses, I often stopped and talked with Howard about what he was doing—and I learned a fair amount just by listening. Howard re-cently died, and is in the nearer presence of our Lord. We already miss his expert touch on the rose garden, but I thank God for Howard’s witness here on earth—and his love for God’s creation.

medals, etc. Folks on active duty please wear your uniforms with decorations, etc. I'm sure we have a lot more military in our congregation than we think. Re-member our children are in church with us. We want them to check things out. Ask questions of mom and dad. "What are they wearing on their coats? What do those bits of color represent?" For people who live on the streets without homes or hope, we pray to the Lord.

For people with mental illness who are confined in jails and prisons, we pray to the Lord.

In thanksgiving for the compassion and dedication of mental professionals and those providing care, we pray to the Lord.

For our elected officials to come to an understanding of the need for increase funding for mental health care, we pray to the Lord.

That the darkness of stigma, labels, exclusion and mar-ginalization might be dispelled by the light of greater understanding, acceptance and respect for the dignity of every person, we pray to the Lord.

For each of us to reach out with support as we form a caring community, we pray to the Lord.

EVALUATING THE PRAYER BOOK, AGAIN

By direction of the 2015 General Convention, next year begins a period of evaluation of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. Your friends in the Library thought it might be useful to offer

this very short review of the Prayer Book history as we in the Protestant Episcopal Church of the USA begin another reflection. Apologies to Prayer Book experts who will find this notation woefully inadequate. All the works mentioned and many others on the subject are available in your Library…

For many Anglicans the BCP is the guidebook of our worship. Historically, as followed in the rubrics of the Prayer Book, the Eucharist and our “common prayer” are the main focus of our communal worship.

In the classic work of 1917, The Episcopal Church by George Atwater, the BCP is described as a “manual of religion. It contains the fundamentals of the Christian Faith. It is a summary of the teachings of the Bible and an exposition of the doctrines of Christianity. It con-tains all that a Christian needs to believe to his soul’s health.” What became (and to many remains) the stan-dard study of the Episcopal Church asserted the five elements of “common worship:” repentance, prayer, praise, faith and instruction.

The Episcopal Church Teaching Series was published in the 1970s and updated every twenty years thereafter. In The New CTS (1999), Volume Six is entitled “Opening the Prayer Book.” In it we come to realize many things that are new to some of us. For example, the heart ache and soul searching that accompanied the 1979 revision, also accompanied the 1928 revision. Moreover, the 1979 version went back beyond the 1928, engaging prayers, text and practice from earlier Prayer Book versions.

The American Prayer Book was first revised in 1785 (Northern), 1786 (Southern), combined later into the 1789 BCP. There was great controversy, as many thought the existing ‘Anglican’ version from 1662 was just fine and needed no revision. The disputes centered on the “descended into Hell” phrase in the Apostles Creed and whether or not to include the Trinity, as opposed to fo-cus on the “Father.” The 1892 version succeeded the for-

mer as the North and South decided at last to bury the War. It was itself replaced by the 1928, which was rife with controversy as many thought it went too far to-ward Roman Catholicism. As most parishioners know, the 1979 was most notable for establishing two forms of worship; Rite 1 & 2.

In the discussions that began in 1985, the issues abound. Among them are the review of paternal language, and whether the emphasis in the 1979 on Creation should be emphasized even more as the apparent resources God has given us may be running out. Only two col-lects address God a creator. And of course, how shall we deal with tmarriage. Most laity would be unaware that the Church from time to time publishes supplemental material to be used for certain occasions along with the Prayer Book. Shall we have one Book or more than one? Undoubtedly we may read in the press that another dis-cussion is under way. Be not alarmed. There have been eight revisions dating to 1549, all accompanied by con-siderable discussion and always with “we always did it that way.” The current review is planned to last at least three years and Galilee will have a voice at diocesan Council and at the general convention if we choose to offer anyone as a delegate, and through our clergy of course. To the extent that it may become relevant to us here at Galilee, Father Andy+ will of course guide us.

What Happened here in October?

October flew by as we are in full swing with our programs. We had both our high school and middle school fall re-treats in October, which were amazing. Our high school went to the mountains, while our middle school headed to the outer banks. For both of our retreats, we had some great discussions about community.

Our Uganda missions team has begun to fundraise for our trip. I believe this will be an incredibly impactful trip for our students as well as to the people we are going to serve. Thank you for your support!
