Housing and Transportation
• This movement is caused by uneven patterns of housing affordability, housing type and employment.
• These are all indicators of uneven regional economic development.
• South Sound jurisdictions need to use housingas a starting point for economic development.
• By itself, housing will not support our local and regional economy sustainably.
Economy
A Regional Perspective• Between the first quarter of 2010 and fourth
quarter of 2016, the State of Washington witnessed employment growth of 530,000 (from 2.6 to 3.2 million).
• Nearly half of these jobs (or 250,000) went to King County, where employment grew from 1.08 to 1.33 million.
• Pierce County’s employment grew by less than 44,000 from 247,000 to 291,000

A Regional Perspective• The five counties of Snohomish, King, Kitsap, Pierce,
and Thurston employed 2,076,000 people as of last quarter of 2016.
• King County’s share was 64.1% of total employment in all five counties.
• Pierce County’s share was 14%• Snohomish = 13.3%• Kitsap = 3.2%• Thurston = 5.4%
