BEST PRACTICE THROUGH REGULATIONSOCFS Category: 8We all understand the regulations but what do we mean when we talk about best practice? APPRECIATE THE ORDINARY AS EXTRAORDINARY: ROUTINESOCFS Category: 1, 3Children under age three do not distinguish routine chores from play or work or adventure the way adults do. For children every event is as sensually rich and important as the next. But ordinary routines quickly become special to children because they are repeated over and over. Daily routines are the heart of the infant/toddler curriculum, for learning, and for deepening relationships. Susan DeCarlo will talk about how through their participation in everyday activities, children begin to develop ideas about past and future, beginning, middle, and end, space and time, cause and effect, pattern and meaning, self and other, friend and stranger that will help them one day sort out their experiences the way adults do.

Date: Tuesday, May 15Time: 6:30 PM- 8:30PMLocation: Syracuse

BETWEEN THE PAGES – EXPLORING STORIES WITH CHILDREN OCFS Category: 3, 8This workshop focuses on interactive reading techniques that engage and actively involve children of all ages in reading. THE GREAT OUTDOORS! OCFS Category: 1, 2, 3, 4Children have a natural connection with the outdoors. Both adults and children are happier and healthier when they spend time outside. Coming in July DANCE KIDS!

We are bringing back this popular workshop because you asked for it. Look for it in our next training catalog.

With childhood obesity on the rise and the well documented benefi ts of movement, dance kids is a fun, interactive way to bring this important component to your program. Special guest presenter, Erain Wilcox, will give you strategies and dance steps to pro-vide fun and health benefi ts to the children you care for. Bring your enthusiasm and dress to get your groove on!

YOU’VE GOT BITING: TODDLERS, PARENTS AND YOU!!OCFS Category: 1, 3, 4If you’ve got toddlers in groups—whether in a center or in your family child care home – you have probably experienced biting. Working with toddlers who are biting can be very frus-trating because they bite so quickly and for so many reasons. In this session we will look at what you need to know to understand why toddlers bite – and more important – how to deal with biting effectively and appropriate-ly. We’ll also look at how to respond to par-ents who are understandably worried, upset or even furious and still “do the right thing” by toddlers. Join presenter, Gretchen Kinnell for this session full of practical ideas based on her book, No Biting! Policy and Practice for Toddler Programs. Date: Tuesday, June 5Time: 6:30 PM- 8:30PMLocation: Auburn

Evening Workshops

SAFE SLEEP FOR BABIES: WHAT EVERYONE WHO CARES FOR BABIES MUST KNOW OCFS Category: 3, 4, 8Thanks to research, we are learning more and more about sudden infant death. While we still don’t know all the causes, we do know what puts babies at risk, and we know practic-es that reduce this risk. Join Gretchen Kinnell to examine the latest research on this topic. You’ll learn the practices that are known to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death and how to share that information with others who care for or about babies.

Date: Wednesday, June 6 Time: 6:30 PM- 8:30PMLocation: Syracuse Fee: $5.00Thanks to funding from the Syracuse

SIDS Prevention Fund, the fee for this workshop is only $5.00 for both members and non-members.

WEEKEND WORKSHOPS

One of the ways that children communicate is through their behavior. Often hitting, scream-ing or defi ance is not seen as communication but rather as misbehavior. In this series of work-shops we will try to understand what they are trying to say to us. We will also discuss approach-es and techniques that can help the children communicate in ways that are more preferred. You can bring more peace into your program by helping children learn how to self-regulate their behavior and be more successful later in life.
