15 SP-240—2 The Nature of Wind Loads and Dynamic Response by D. Boggs and J. Dragovich Synopsis: The elements of dynamic response are presented. Using the model of a single degree of freedom oscillator, the nature of wind loads and their effect on dynamic response are discussed. The results of the response of a single degree of freedom oscillator are used to describe the current building code procedures. The measured damping in structures is presented and conclusions regarding the appropriate level of damping to use as a function of drift are presented. Finally, issues related to the use of load factors are highlighted. Keywords: background; damping; dynamic response; resonance; wind loads
