Teaching and Learning
Much more responsibility on you for your learning – for instance personalised timetables.
Always ask questions Seek help Come and see me!
7
Module Choice
Interest in the subject, you have to pass, be careful about your selection
Prerequisites, corequisites, excluded combinations, tied, capped, is it available, where is it running
Timetable compatibility – all modules must be timetable compatible every year
Keeping options open – you should be able to progress in at least two subjects – remember that the timetable could make your ideal choice infeasible – have more than one ‘ideal’ choice

Plan B: Changing your modules after completing registration
You can change your mind about your modules in the Science Faculty until the end of the 3rd week of term – Friday 25th October 2013.
Auditing one other module where you are undecided is a good plan.
You have to catch up on any missed work in the new modules
Procedure is on the Nat Sci web site – look under Current Students
9
Transferring out of Natural Sciences at the end of Year 1
You need to take the modules listed on the web page within the Nat Sci Freshers area in order to keep open a possible transfer out of Natural Sciences at the end of the first year. Such transfers are not always guaranteed to be possible.
You may need to do sufficiently well at the end of Year 1 and/or undertake additional work over the summer vacation.
Registration/Induction
You need to pick and choose the activities. Typically for Science Departments there are preliminary/registration sessions on Monday/Tuesday and Induction sessions on Thursday/Friday.– There may be multiple sessions.
Some departments need see you to register others don’t, see– www.dur.ac.uk/welcome/
One or better both of– Human Origins and Diversity (ANTH1071)– People and Cultures (ANTH1061)
Welcome: Monday 2.00 pm – 2.30 pm or repeated on Tuesday 9.00 am- 9.30 am both in CG85

Key Modules - Archaeology
If planning lots of Archaeology– Scientific Methods in Archaeology (ARCH1041)– One of
Introduction to Archaeology (ARCH1071), Discovering World Prehistory (ARCH1121) and Ancient Civilisations of the East (ARCH1111)
Otherwise– ARCH1071 has best progression
Induction: Monday at 2.00 pm - 3.30 pm in Room W309 and repeated on Tuesday at 9.30 am - 11.00 am, in Room PH30.
13
Key Modules – Biology (2 modules) Ecological - needs either Biology or Chemistry A-level
Organism and Environment (BIOL1161), Genetics (BIOL1171)
Cell Biology - needs Chemistry A-level or Chemistry for Biologists
Genetics (BIOL1111), Molecules and Cells (BIOL1281)
Biomedical – needs Chemistry A-level or Chemistry for Biologists
Molecules and Cells (BIOL1281) Physiology (BIOL1151)
Induction: Tuesday 9 -10, E005
14
Key Modules - Business
People Management and Organisations BUSI1141
Induction: 9.00 until 12.30 on Tuesday in W103
15
Key Modules - Chemistry Core Chemistry 1A (CHEM1078) If you want to keep open the possibility of
specialising in the Physical side of Chemistry in later years do Core Chemistry 1B (CHEM1098) or one of: Linear Algebra (MATH1061);Single Maths A (MATH1561);Maths for Engineers and Scientists (MATH1551)
Principles of Earth Sciences (GEOL1091)Earth Materials (GEOL1021)Field Studies (GEOL1051) for availability of double dissertation @ level 3
Induction: Tuesday 9:00-10:00, ES231 followed by module approval until 5pm (go to Biology if there is a clash and visit ES today for details)
Those taking Field Studies go on a Field trip on Friday!
18
Key Modules - Economics
Elements of Economics (ECON1011)
If you study a level 1 Maths module takeThe World Economy (ECON1071) elseEconomic Methods (ECON1021)
Induction: 9.00 until 12.30 on Tuesday in W103
19
Key Modules - Geography
Ideally at least one of– Physical Geography (GEOG1081)– Human Geography (GEOG1071)– Environment and Society (GEOG1061)– Introduction To Geographical Research (
GEOG1232) for a Dissertation @ Level 3. Induction: Thursday: 9:00-12:00, W309
Linear Algebra (MATH1061)/Calculus and Probability (MATH1071), this is the only way to progress to Level 2 Maths modules. Take MATH1051 Analysis as well if you can. You need at least an AS-level in Further Maths.– Welcome: Monday 2-3pm, E005
Note that if you take Single Maths A (MATH1561) or Maths for Engineers and Scientists (MATH1551) you will not be allowed to follow MATH1061!

Key Modules - Philosophy
Any one module, but
Knowledge and Reality (PHIL1021), Ethics and Values (PHIL1011), Reading Philosophy (PHIL1041)
It is possible to take modules from subjects outside the programme e.g. Languages, Theology, Sociology…..
42
Options at the end of Year 1
Take no more than 2 Level 1 modules in your second year within a Natural Sciences degree or a ‘triple Honours’ – a Natural Sciences degree
Take a Joint Honours degree within the Natural Sciences programme
Transfer to a Single Honours degree provided you have taken the appropriate modules
43
Natural Sciences
No choice has to be made until
the end of the first year. You need to set yourself up for a dissertation (follow at least one Year 1 joint-honours path – ideally two)
44

4+2 4+1+1
3+3 3+1+1+1
3+2+1
45
M.Sci. degrees
M.Sci. (Joint) Honours in
– Biology and Chemistry– Biology and Physics – Chemistry and Mathematics– Chemistry and Physics– Mathematics and Physics
M.Sci. in Natural Sciences
46
Joint Honours
You must follow descriptions of the route precisely to get the JH title, both for BSc and MSci
47
M.Sci. in Natural Sciences
Only available with modules in Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Maths and Physics
It is possible to take all year 4 modules in just one subject, but you will have to take a substantial number of modules in earlier years in that subject
48
Transfers between M.Sci. and B.Sc. within Nat Sci
You can transfer at any time up until some point in the third year from an M.Sci. to a B.Sc.
You can transfer at any time up to the start of the third year from a B.Sc. to an M.Sci. provided you have taken the right modules
