December 25, 2016 The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) “And the Word became flesh” JOHN 1:14 Jesus is God’s ultimate gift of love to us. The countless other blessings that God showers upon us are nothing compared to the gift of His only Son. The only appropriate way for us to respond to such generous love is with our own generous love. When we dedicate our lives to sharing all the gifts God has placed in our hands, the peace of Christ truly will control our hearts and we will know Christmas joy every day.
Please note: The rectory office will close at noon on Friday, December 23 and will also be closed on Monday, December 26th the day after Christmas Day.
The Priests and Staff at Our Lady of Sor-rows would like to wish everyone a blessed and Joyous Christmas.
Our Lady of Sorrows is looking for people interested in becoming Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers. The more people willing to participate, the less often each person would be called upon to serve. Please do not take the stance that someone else will volunteer—more often than not, that attitude produces zero results. Won’t you please consider volunteering now. Anyone interested should con-tact the office at 201-998-4616.
Away In A Manger
From birth, children try very hard to communicate. We find their efforts endearing and, if we think honestly, the trust and confidence they express soon humbles us. We know and love our children deeply and imperfectly; God, who gave them life, knows and loves them perfectly. Love and awareness of our human limits impel us to help chil-dren learn about prayer, about communicating with God. We ask that you and your family stop by our manger and have your child share in the true meaning of Christmas.
In the midst of your celebration of Christ’s birth, pray for peace throughout the world and that all nations will come to respect life from conception to natural death.
TODAY CHRIST IS BORN! WELCOME
We welcome all who have come to join us in jubilant prayer and glorious song at this celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. If you are a newcomer, a visitor, a relative or parishioner: Welcome! If you are a face familiar here, or someone we will soon know better: Welcome! As
we celebrate the Word of God made flesh in Jesus, we also celebrate the way in which every person here makes Him present again, as we gather in thanks and praise, sing-ing “Glory to God!” May the joy and peace of this season and its celebrations be yours today and every day! The entire parish ministry staff wishes you a Blessed Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2017!!!
A Christmas Blessing Lord, bless us who look upon the manger;
May it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, And raise up our thoughts to Him
Who is God with us and savior to all, And who lives and reigns For ever and ever, Amen.
Christmas Candle
In old Ireland, Catholics could not practice their faith in the open. On Christmas Eve, a lit candle in the window was a signal to any priest that he was welcome to celebrate Mass there. When questioned Irish Catholics told
the soldiers that the candles were to light the way for Mary & Joseph, who were looking for a place to stay.
Why Did The Magi Give Gifts to Jesus?
The Magi knew that they were traveling to greet a new king and brought gifts that were appropriate at the time for a king. Over the years, the church has reinterpret-ed the gifts in terms of Jesus’ life. They gave him gold to recognize his royalty.
The expensive gift of Frankincense, often burned to carry prayers to Heaven, was a symbol of Jesus’ priesthood. His last gift of Myrrh, was used in burial preparations, a sign that Jesus would suffer and die for us.
2017 RELIGIOUS ART CALENDARS—are now avail-able. These beautiful religious calendars were made possi-ble through the courtesy of “Shaw Buyus Home for Ser-vices.” We thank them for their continued generosity.
