The Museum at The Creamery The purpose of the Skaneateles Historical Society is to conduct and encourage historical research and to collect, preserve, and exhibit historical material in connection with the Town of Skaneateles. THE SKANEATELES HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER May-June 2013 Vol. 28, No. 3 Laurie Winship, Editor MAY PROGRAM Our May 28 program will be the Story of the Interactive Lake Model. We will talk about how the initial idea came about and each of the steps involved, from a search for a model builder, the design of the cabinetry, the design of the interactive interface, the wiring and the building of the software/hardware platform, and the development of the interactive content for the visitor. We will show some of the model's point- of-interest stories, and a couple of the ancillary stories that are available on the model's trackpad. One of these tales recalls the glory days of the Skaneateles steamboats and how they brought the entire lake community together by linking the cottages and landings with public transportation, freight and mail, in addition to bringing tourists to the Glen Haven Water Cure and other attractions. This will be a fun and enlightening program, guided by Dave Miller, our Board Member who has played a key role in the implementation of our newest and quite popular display. Please join us at 7:30 at The Museum at The Creamery. WE’RE EXPANDING AGAIN! Work has started on an addition to the Boat Building--this was included on the original plans but we’ve been waiting to raise more money. Thanks to some generous donations, we now have the money to start this addition. Additional contributions are welcome. WEBMASTER NEEDED Kenneth Wooster, our loyal webmaster for many years, is stepping down. If you are interested in volunteering, and have the skills to help us create a new web site, please call us at 685-1360.

CREAMERY HOURS, MAY-JUNE Fridays, 1-4 p.m.

Saturdays, 1-4 p.m.or by appointment

JUNE PROGRAMEric Pitman, a life-long resident of Skaneateles, will discuss and share the history of antique decoy collecting and his passion for following that path, with emphasis on decoys from the Finger Lakes region. He will bring examples that were made in the late 1880's all the way through the 1970's with many different species that can be seen throughout the region at various times of the year. Eric has been pursuing his passion for over 40 years. Please join us on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. We will also have a short annual meeting, including election of Board members. And a big thank you to Julie DiBagio and Pat Elkovitch for coming on the Board earlier in the year.

Volunteers Needed

We need you! If you are interested in being a docent, (we will train you--it’s

fun!) or working in the gift shop, or helping with maintenance jobs, please

contact us at 685-1360.

UPDATES

A gas leak was detected on Saturday, April 6. Our thanks to the Skaneateles Fire Department for their prompt response. The original gas line to the new buildings, where the leaks were, was underground; we had to replace it with an above-ground line.

Window film is being installed in the new buildings to eliminate UV rays that are harmful to our artifacts and to help cut down on glare and heat from the sun. Updated window coverings will also be considered for the original building as time and funding permit.

This is one of Eric’s oldest decoys, from the late 1800s.

ARCHIVES

Archives are basically collections of historical records. The ones at our Museum all relate to the history of Skaneateles, since that’s our mission. We have a special room that our archives are kept in, usually called the Cooler. It is the most secure room in the building, the most fire-resistant, and we work hard to keep it climate-controlled to conditions that are best for items being stored there. Museums try to keep the temperature between 68-70 degrees and the relative humidity between 45-50%.

We have a number of types of files in the archives: Subject Files, which contain articles about businesses, industries, organizations, and other topics related to Skaneateles; Biographical Files, which contain information about families in Skaneateles; Photo Files; and House Files, which contain abstracts, deeds, or other pertinent information that we’ve been given about houses mainly in the village. We’re always happy to add to these files when people bring us new information that is useful to us.

In addition to files the archives include books; maps; various paper artifacts such as posters; scrapbooks; diaries; and genealogies.

Because we want these materials to stay in good condition, only researchers are allowed in the archives collection so there is a minimum of handling these various collections. The public is welcome to use the public research rooms which contain a good collection of books, duplicates of the Subject and House files, and Farm Files. Researchers are happy to help them and can bring them materials that may be only in the archives. One of the most frequent requests we get is for genealogical research. Due to the excellent indexing of our local papers and census records that have been done by volunteers for many years, we have one of the best collections of accessible information needed for genealogies. Often, people plan their summer vacations to come here to use our materials.

We charge only .15 cents per page for copying. People who request basic material via email, postal mail, or over the phone are asked to contribute a $5.00 research and copying fee; more involved research results in a higher fee.

Our current researchers are Barbara Spain; Beth Batlle; Sally Holben; Ted Prindle; and Pat Blackler. One of them is always here on Fridays from 1-4 p.m., or you can make an appointment to come in at another time by calling 685-1360.

Griffin Lengyel, for stuffing and mailing our Annual Fund Drive letter as part of his school community service requirement. Watch for it in your mailbox, and please continue to support us.

Julie DiBagio, for volunteering to coordinate our landscaping and garden maintenance this year. If you would like to help, please call her at 415-1809.

Anyone who can supply us with myrtle to plant on the Kelley St. side of the Creamery, so we don’t have grass to mow!
