the 40 plus years Ive lived in Mount Baker, Ive see n major changesthe neighborhood. Mount Baker Community Club too has gone

rough ups and downs and has emerged as the vibrant neighbor-od center it is today. We offer a range of activities for children, resi-nts interested in civic issues and community improvement, andople who want to meet and hang out with neighbors.

e hope you know that you are already a member of the Mountker Community Club. Everyone who lives, works or goes to

hool in Mount Baker has automatic membership. But what doesmeans to be a member? It means you can:

Day inTe Park in the fall

development in Mount Baker (for example, near the light rail

station), ballot initiatives, emergency preparedness, and more

Tis is your club. Your participation and support keep it relevantand growing. Consider attending a monthly meeting, joining acommittee, becoming a board member or volunteering at events. And if the Community Club is important to you, please considerdonating to the annual fund or the capital campaign.

I want to share with you why I participate in the Annual GivingFund for the Community Clubhouse: I want a brick and mortar

venue, a real place, where I can gather with my community. I valuehaving a neighborhood spot where we can share ideas. Te MBCCis a convenient and beautiful venue for all kinds of civic, social, andcommunity activity.

Earlier this year aferTe New Yorkermagazine published an ar-ticle describing in terrifying detail what Seattleites will experi-ence when the next big earthquake hits, cries of We need moreinformation quickly spread through our Mount Baker commu-nity. Neighbors posted their concerns on www.NextDoor.comwondering, How do we protect ourselves? and What concretesteps do I need to take? Several online posts urged MBCC tohold a meeting.

We agreed, and one month later the Club hosted a meeting on emer-gency preparedness with the Seattle Office of Emergency Manage-

ment. More than 60 community members attended. In times of trou-ble, there is comfort in numbers. I am grateful that MBCC provided

an outstanding venue on shortnotice and free of charge.

Tis community venue requiresdonations to keep it going: fundsto keep the lights on, to pay forthe part-time staffmembers andthe ability to host free neighbor-hood events. For example, therecent Day in the Park broughtalmost 500 people to our MountBaker playground, and it was100% free!

Local Seattle developer, Ron Sher, has spoken about the importanceof a third place - a place that is not your work place or ybut simply community space. Community is why I am

why I donate. I hope you will join me in donating to M

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: CRAIG NORBERGy Erin Bruce

aig Norberg has been pounding the pavement and knocking on

ors in our neighborhood asking home owners to be a part of the

ount Baker Home Tour, an historic and beloved event. Craig has

rved as the lead organizer for the 2013 and 2015 Home Tours and

    ts & Crafs Fair.

native of Seattles north end, Craig grew up in Laurelhurst. (I)

ways recognized Mount Baker as one of the most sophisticated

ighborhoods in Seattle.Tis is Olmstead design! Craig exclaimed.

ood design contributes to an extraordinary experience, and in our

se, a beautiful neighb orhood. Mount Baker is a really sp ecial place.hen Craig attended his rst Home Tour in 2011 he was happily

rprised to nd Norberry Tile jobs in several of the homes. He

ok that as a sign and decided to help organize the next Home Tour.

e 2013 Home Tour coincided with the centennial of the Mount

ker Community Clubhouse. Craig wanted homes that year to re-

ct turn of the century architecture, so he chose only homes builte same year as the Clubhouse. Funny lesson learned, said Craig,

ost hundred year old homes have the same oor plan!

is years Home Tour will include homes built throughout ourighborhoods history, from turn of the century to the 2000s.

k Craig what his ideal tour of Mount Baker homes would be, and

cant stop listing one glorious home afer another. Hes an archi-

ctural history buffand knows many of the neighborhoo ds gems by

art. Craig was actually planning to step down as Co-Chair for the

ome Tour, but got so excited listing offhis dream homes that he

as hooked for another year. Lucky us!

aigs appreciation for good design carries over into his professionnd passion - as owner of Norberry Tile & Plumbing located on the

st Avenue ridge in Mount Baker. Step into Craigs studio and you

ll be blown away by the artistry and beauty Craig displays in his

e work and selection of plumbing xtures. Tere are many truly

nique pieces. No more white tile, says Craig of his efforts to gently

udge customers toward more artistic tile choices. Although if you

ant white tile, he has some stunning choices.

l of us at the Mount Baker Community Club are so grateful that

aig has helped organize the Home Tour - making it one of theost anticipated events of the year! Te Mount Baker Home Tour

d Arts & CrafFair is a giant undertaking. As Programs Director

MBCC, I am personally thankful to Craig for working with home

wners to create an interesting tour of homes and celebrating the f ull

0 year history of architecture in Mount Baker.

sides the neighborhoods architecture and design, when asked if

ere was anything else he loved about Mount Baker, Craig revealed,

ount Baker happens to have the perfect incline for my rollerblad-

    g style.

This is Olmstead design!Craig exclaimed. Good designcontributes to an extraordinaryexperience, and in our case, abeautiful neighborhood.

Our one-hundred-year-old Clubhouse is in dire need of manyrepairs and upgrades, most importantly replacement of the roof andthe oil-red boiler. We must literally raise the roof for the Clubhouse!

Fundraising for this project began with an incredible $100,000large project grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Now we must match the grant with monetary and labor donations.

Please visit our website at www.renewingthelegacy.org to learnhow you can contribute. If you are able to make a donation ofstocks you do not have to pay capital gains on the stocks increasein value, plus youll receive a charitable deduction. To learn more,

Can you give the gif of time? We have many short- and longer-term volunteer opportunities as a part of our grant match. Do youhave development experience, or would you like to get some? Ourfundraising committee is looking for members.

Many Mount Baker residents may be unaware of our neighbor-

hoods rich history. As part of the Seattle Design Festival this past

fall, Mount Baker resident and designer, Noah Jeppson temporarily

transformed the pedestrian overpass (at Martin Luther King Way

South and Rainier Avenue South) into an outdoor gallery of inspi-

    rational neighborhood stories.

For two weeks Noahs installation, entitled Mind the Gap,

explored a literal bridge connecting historic Mount Baker to theurban development around the light rail station. Te installation

also addressed equity gaps in accessibility, infrastructure, and cul-

ture that frequently follow transit-oriented development in historic

    neighborhoods.

Colorful signage and paint welcomed pedestrians and cyclists

onto the bridge, reinforcing the Olmsted Plan for interconnected

parks and boulevards. Stories included that of Brice Taylor, Afri-

can American/Native American football star from Franklin HighSchool who later became the University of Southern Californiasrst All-American football player in 1925, and rst African-Amer-

ican head coach at any Los Angeles high school. Taylor achieved

all his success despite being an orphan born without a lefhand!

Tis design installation was partially funded by grants frSafe Routes to School and the Seattle Office of Arts an
