The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 14, 2020

A Note from Fr, Dale, “A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi Summer is my favorite season. I love summer. I love the warmth, the long days, and the slower pace. I most of all love the sunshine. It seems we all need summer and sunshine after a long, dreary spring of confinement and quarantine. Still, this will not be a typical summer.

There are many things making this summer like non-other. First, we have the ongoing pandemic. While we are beginning to reopen Masses, confessions and other Sacraments, the pandemic is far from over. Society is loosening the restrictions but precautions continue to be recommended and necessary to protect people who are vulnerable. This changes many of our summer plans, even here at the parish. In less than three weeks, we will celebrate our nation’s independence. Independence Day in Cicero has come to mean the Lights Over Morse celebration and related activities. Lights Over Morse is currently scheduled but limited to two days – Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. In recent years, our parish has participated in the parade with a parish float. We have also hosted a parish picnic prior to the fireworks. The parade and fireworks will go on this year, but the parish will not have a float in the parade or host a picnic. You are certainly welcome to come by the church to watch the parade, but the building will not be open. This is due to limited time to plan for a float, managing the disinfecting or sanitizing restrooms, and concerns of what hosting a safe picnic would require. Our local Knights of Columbus Council will be in the parade and will be parking cars in our parking lot and property (weather permitting) as a fundraiser. We will also not have a 5K walk / run this year. Summer is also a time for vacation. I am taking vacation to visit family in Minnesota from June 24 through July 10. It won’t be a typical visit due to all the pandemic precautions. My mother, who is in assisted living with the Little Sisters of the Poor in St. Paul, is only allowed visitors through a window. I’m not sure how that will work but we will at least be able to see each other. I do hope to have some down time at a lake or in the woods where “social distancing” is just part of the experience. Certainly one of the most significant events of the summer is my reassignment and move to Lafayette. In case you missed it, I am being reassigned as Pastor of the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Ann Church in downtown Lafayette. The effective date was delayed due to the pandemic. I now begin my new assignment on August 19, 2020. My last weekend here will be August 15 and 16. There is a sendoff party scheduled for Sunday, August 16. It will probably be outside. More on that later. My reassignment is a change and transition for all of us. On June 3 the priests of our diocese took part in a video presentation by Fr. Ron Knott about change and transition. One key point he made was that change happens, but transition is what we choose to do with change. It is a process, and the best way to enter into transition is with a spiritual approach. He suggested the image of the Israelite people and their experience of the exodus from Egypt. We all need to trust God leading us. We will naturally want to go back to what was familiar, even if it was slavery, like the old Irish proverb “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.” Before you suggest I am implying anything about your next pastor, remember you do know him! My point is that change can be hard. There is a temptation to cling to the present or return to the past. We need to let God lead us so we can all make a good transition. What is most helpful is prayer, so God can change us. We are always called to let God lead us, change us to help us to be who He has created us to be—both as individuals and as a faith community. He promises that. His dream (vision) for us is our destination, where we want to head. This is will not be a typical summer, but it is summer nonetheless. As we go through this unusual summer of change together as a parish, let’s turn to God, listen to Him and let Him provide us what we need, just like the Israelites in the desert. Remember, if we let Him lead us, He will take us to a better place – the Promised Land. “One needs a vision of the promised land in order to have the strength to move.” ~ Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

Efficacious Novena to the Sacred Heart of Jesus I. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you." Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of...... (here name your request) Our Father....Hail Mary....Glory Be to the Father....Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. II. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you." Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of.......(here name your request) Our Father...Hail Mary....Glory Be To the Father....Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. III. O my Jesus, you have said: "Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away." Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of.....(here name your request) Our Father....Hail Mary....Glory Be to the Father...Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender Mother and ours. Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.
