The Moon. For Wiccans, it is far more than a heavenly body that might catch oureye as we drive home late at night, its fullness shining through trees or brightlyoverhead. For many Wiccan, she is the embodiment of the Goddess, she isMaiden, Mother and Crone. It is also an important source of natural energy that isessential in magick, if you preform your spells and rituals at the right lunar phase.Preforming spells during the wrong phase of the moon can seriously debilitate thespell, producing no result or possibly the wrong result. The Wheel of the Moon, isapproximately 28 1/2 days long, waxing to Full Moon and waning to New Moon.

Waxing Moon means the moon is getting larger in the sky, moving from the NewMoon towards the Full Moon. This is a time for spells that attract, that bringpositive change, spells for love, good luck, growth. This is a time for newbeginnings, to conceptualize ideas, to invoke. Full Moon is when the moon has reached its zenith, it forms a perfect silverysphere in the sky. This is a time for spells that transform, increase pyschic ability, for fertility spells and invocation to lunar goddesses. This is a time of strength, love and power. At this time the moon represents the Goddess in her Motheraspect, give praise to Cerridwen, Isis or one of the other Mother Goddesses. Theperiod of the Full Moon lasts from about 3 days before to 3 days after the actualfull moon.

Waning Moon means the moon is decreasing in size, moving from the Full Moontowards the New Moon. This is a time for spells that banish, release, reverse. Thisis a time to break bad habits or bad addictions, to end bad relationships. This is atime of deep intuition and a time for divination. At this time the moon representsthe Goddess in her Crone Aspect, give praise to Hecate, Morrigan or one of theother Crone Goddesses. The period of the waning moon lasts about 14 days.

As the Wheel of the Moon continues on its never ending course, the moon alsotravels through the different astrological signs, just as the sun does, only morerapidly. When the moon resides within the various signs, the sign influences themagickal aspect of the moon.

EARTH spells should be preformed when the moon is in one of the astrologicalsigns governed by that element: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn.AIR spells should bepreformed when the moon is in one of the astrological signs governed by thatelement: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.FIRE spells should be performed when themoon is in one of the astrological signs governed by that element: Aries, Leo,Sagittarius.WATER spells should be preformed when the moon is in one of theastrological signs governed by that element: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

In magick, timing is very important. In the calendar are listed the times of theNew Moon, Full Moon and when it enters a new quarter, as well as the timeswhen the moon enters the various astrological signs, but these times are generalEastern Standard Times. For those residing in the United States, an accuratelisting of the Full and New Moon, Sun and Moon rises and sets, as well as timesof Planet rises and sets, I highly recommend checking outThe Old Farmer'sAlmanac Home Page. What To Do With The Moon

By Professor D.

Fellow Pagans: There was an article in Discover Magazine recently and thelead article was entitled "What should we do with the moon?" Apparently, space engineers are busy trying to decide what to do with the moon.

The big candidates are:1) mine it,2) put factories on it, and3)send tourists there.Preferably, all three.

The arrogance of this question "What should we do with the moon?" is soincredible that it leaves me speechless (well, nearly -- then I found my voice). The Moon is our Goddess -- beautiful and real, ruling the night. Imagine afactory on one corner, a large mine on another, and tourists golfing on it on athird. Would we lose our Goddess then? For me, I wouldn't lose the Goddess, because she is everywhere, but I wouldlose a profound symbol of her presence.

Furthermore, the Moon and Sun would no longer be symmetrical, celestialorbs ruling their respective skies. And in an important sense when thishappens to the moon, I will lose a part of the Goddess because if she iseverywhere, then she is in the Moon and when we spoil it like we've spoiledYellowstone, Denali, the Himalayas, the Rockies, Antarctica, the rain forests, then we will be spoiling her and losing her to human greed. We will have to find Her elsewhere. Assuming She wants to be found by us.The irony in all this is that though paganism is so human, being in manyways the first human religion, mining the moon is also so human. It is whatwe do. We would mine the universe if we could.

Page 14: The Moon - History, Ritual and moregypsey.mavericsa.co.za/pdf/general/mystical_things/moon.pdf · The Moon - History, Ritual and more The Moon. For Wiccans, ... essential in magick,

With our science and technology we are like gods and goddesses, yet we useour powers to make air conditioned strip malls the size of small countries. We are so beautiful and ugly at the same time. How can we be pagans andnot cry at what we are about to do to the Moon (in the next 100 years)? Howcan we be pagans and not weep at our travesties. Yet, how can we be pagansand not human?

It's the other part of being human that makes us pagans: being reverentialtowards all life and Nature, loving our fellow flora and fauna, gasping at thebeauty of the stars. Humans are both entrepreneurs and spiritual seekers -- alaughable combination until you see it played out in front of your own eyes.We will lose the Moon. It is going to be forever changed. Somehow knowingthat Alan Shepard hit a golf ball on the moon and astronauts rode around ina dune buggy on it hasn't changed it for me -- those first astronauts weexplores -- they symbolized the best the human race had to offer.

But putting a MacDonald's on the Moon is very different. We will lose a partof our night sky, our sacred sky. The human race is going to do its best tobuy and sell Nature -- a goal that is completely antithetical to being pagan --at least for me. Will we lose our Goddess?

This is the question "Which part of our humanity will win out, theentrepreneur selling the heavens, or the spiritual wanderer who is not lost, but only seeking?"

Blue Moon

About Blue Moons

Blue moon?

When you ask someone: "what is a blue moon?" the chances are ten to onethat you'll get the answer: "When you have two full moons in one month". Ifwe use this definition, then we have a blue moon approximately ever 2.7years. Having two blue moons per year is extremely rare, the full moon thenskips a month. This happens only three to four times per century. Two bluemoons per year always fall in January and March, as Febuary with its 28days is the only months short enough to not contain a full moon. This year1999, we have two blue moons.

Definitions

The second full moon in a month has just the same color as always. It doesnot turn blue at all. So why do people call this a blue moon? Can the moonreally turn blue? There are several definitions of 'blue moon'.

Two of them are currently still in use,1. Four hundred years ago, if someone said, "He would argue the moon wasblue," it would be understood as, "He'd argue that black is white."2. Also long ago, 'blue moon' was synonym for 'absurd'. "When the moonturns blue", would be similar to the expression "when pigs fly". It was soabsurd that it would never happen.3. In astronomy, we have a blue moon when certain types of dust and smokefrom volcanoes or forest fires absorb red light. When this happens, the moonand the sun get a blue tint. This however is a very rare phenomenon. Ithappened in 1883 when the Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded, in 1927when a late monsoon in India set up conditions for a blue moon and in 1951when huge forest fires in Alberta threw smoke particles up into the sky.4. The phrase "once in a blue moon" means, that an event is fairlyinfrequent, but not quite regular enough to pinpoint.

5. There are popular songs in which "blue moon" is a symbol of sadness andloneliness.6. In recent years, the less scientific, but more popular definition of the bluemoon has become widespread, namely that it is the second full moon withinone month. This new meaning has mainly become popular through theTrivial Pursuit game in 1986. Ever since this definition has been the mostwidely used.

So which version is correct?

Officially, the third definition, the astronomical one, is correct. The sixthdefinition, the two full moons in one month variety, may appeal to manypeople, but has no roots in folklore. But as this popular definition is now sowidely used, it doesn't make sense to ignore it in favour of the astronomicaldescription. When people claim that the 'second full moon' definition iswrong, then they are technically correct. Language is a dynamic mediumhowever. So when enough people use a false expression, it will in timebecome correct. Therefore, at this moment, it is not more than logical to statethat a 'blue moon' is a rare astronomical phenomenon, but also an occurenceof two full moons within one month.

This article was based on:"The rising of the bogus blue moon" - Terence Dickinson"Folklore of the 'Blue Moon'" - Philip Hiscock

Healing By The Moon

There are many different ways to give and receive healing. A laugh, a hug, even a pat on the back or soothing tone can provide healing to someone inneed. In today's environment of high medical bills, expensive prescriptionsand invasive procedures, many people are looking to 'alternative medicines'.But you might take note at just how many of these 'new alternatives' areactually ancient healing methods or simple 'home remedies' your grandmother used to provide. No matter what you chose to believe, nothing shouldtake the place of a visit to your doctor when problems arise. Holistic healingmethods are designed to assist in treating the 'whole' person and not just thephysical ailment most medical treatments deal with.

Those who carry Raven Medicine also carry a heavy responsibility toSpirit.Raven is the messenger of magic from the great void where allknowledge waits for us. He is also the symbol of changes in consciousness, oflevels of awareness and of perception. He carries the mark of theshape-shifter. He is the carrier of healing energy from distances. Those ofyou who have asked for messages of light and healing and prayer on this listhave asked for raven medicine. What all of this means to us in themodern-day world is that raven medicine gives you the ability to get insideanother's head and heart, and to understand them from the inside out, so tospeak. You can "become" that other person because of the depth of yourunderstanding of them, and it is not necessary to be in their physicalpresence for that to happen. Spiritual healers and counsellors who areskilled in their abilities are using raven power for they have a depth ofunderstanding and empathy not shared by all. Because of this power, theyhave the ability to actually alter another's perception and behavior. They areable to work real magic in bringing peace, healing and understanding toothers. Here is the heavy responsibility, and the dangers, in raven medicine. As with all things, these powers can be used for dark purposes. It enables thecarrier to manipulate and coerce others into doing their will to the detrimentof the other. This medicine can be used for selfish and self-serving purposesfor the ego and greed of the carrier. Because of the power of the levels in

understanding others, a practitioner of the black arts can use raven fordestructive purposes. If you carry raven medicine, you must always use it inthe light for the highest and best interests of others. You must use it for thegood and well being of others, and never for your own selfish motives eventhough you may be tempted when times are bad. Raven medicine demandsthat you walk in the light in all things. That's heavy with responsibility foryour own thoughts and deeds.

Work your magic in the light -- you are Raven.

HEALING...??

The most common ~ understanding~ of healing is to havediscomfort....diminish so it does not .. interfere with...... day to day living. This leads us to think that healing is just about the physical body andconclude that if our bodies are giving us less trouble we might think ofourselves as healed.

How many of us have had friends or acquaintances that although they maybe physically fit but they are unhappy, frustrated, and many times even feelhelpless about an event ... or situation .... or relationhip. Sometimes they evencollapse with heart attacks or unexpected illnesses.

Consider then......healing is about more........ than just .......relievingsymptoms...... in the....physical.....body....Looking at the picture to the right.... allow your imagination to open to the possibility .... that the moon showsyour emotions ... and it is impacting and touching the other 3 parts of you ....your soul (spirit - light blue center star) ..... and becomes solidified in yourmind (1 solid dark blue star)your body (2nd dark blue star). TO WHAT WE ARE T H I N K I N G !!!!!Once you know what you are thinking and you discover it is not fair ornurturing or someone elses thought and not yours and is not in agreementwith what you think...Y O U C A N C H A N G E I T ! ! !

THOUGHTS

Thoughts seem to run rampant though your mind, IT IS ONLY IDEASINITIALLY YOU HAVE A CHOICE ABOUT WHAT THOUGHT YOUMAKE SOLID.

Soul - the living forever part of each of us that speaks to us all day BUT ..very softly, very kindly, very gently .... the Goddess/God force part of us wewere born with THIS PART OF US ONLY COMES WHEN WE INVITE ITTO HELP US IN MOMENT TO MOMENT EXPERIENCES.

WHAT COMES FIRST???

Where do we begin to create heath, happiness and healing?BY IDENTIFYING THE BELIEF OR THOUGHT that brings the upset andUSING OUR POWER OF CHOICE ... right then.....to replace that thoughtwith one THAT IS FAIR AND IN ALIGNMENT WITH the unconditionalloving and accepting part of us.

Moon Cord

Moon Cords

The idea behind moon cords is to embrace and preserve specific attributes ofmoon power which are available during a specific moon phase. Theseattributes are directed into a length of cord and held there byknots; thus theattributes are available to the witch at any time. For example: you may wishto perform some magick which is appropriate to the waxing moon.

Ideally, you would be wisest to wait until after the moon is new to utilize themost compatible energies for your work. But what if you have good reasonnot to wait, and what if in linear time the moon is actually waning? Noproblem, if you have prepared a new moon cord, you can draw upon the newmoon power at any time of any month. You can prepare a cord during eachphase of the moon, and thus, have available to you the power of each phase. However I strongly suggest that you use the cords only when absolutelynecessary, and try to work with the phases of the moon in the sky wheneveryou can.

TO PREPARE A MOON CORD:Use a length of colored wool, or embroidery thread about two feet long. Youcan have five different colors if you prefer and prepare five cords: new, waxing, full, waning and dark. Or you can simplify matters and use threecolors for three cords: new and waxing combined, full ( alone ),waning anddark combined. I find it sufficient to work with three.

To prepare a cord during the appropriate Moon phase, Light your goddesscandle and sit at your altar or work table- or go outside. State alignments, and call on that aspect of the goddess who rules the phase you wish to putinto the cord. This is called charging the cord. Thus for the new and waxingcall upon Diana; for the full call upon Selene, for the waning call uponHecate. It's a good idea to use your athame for this, as the process is relatedto drawing down the moon. In a sense, you are drawing her down for each

phase to enter your cord, so you may draw a pentagram over the face of themoon, or over the candle flame which represents her, and trace a line ofpower from the moon or flame into your cord, stating words of power.

"By the one power.Working for and through meI hereby call upon you, Diana,

To enter this cord with your powerto charge this cord

enter this cordfor the good of all

and according to free willfor the work of positive magic only

To aid me in my workat the appropriate times,According to your will

as these knots are tied."

Then tie nine knots in the cord, placing them equidistant from one anotherand use the ninth knot to tie the cord into a circle. then add:" So mote it be"

Place this circle on the altar encircling your Goddess candle, and leave itthere for awhile, meditating if you wish on the phase of the moon with whichyou have charged the cord. When you feel your work is complete, wind thecord into a compact little entity and enclose it in a tiny pouch or box. This iskept on the altar. It is best kept near your own tools.

When you work with a moon cord either hold it in your hand or placearound your goddess candle, as you do specific magic for which you need it'said. When you are finished, put it back in it's holder. You may take it outand hold it under the moon during it's name phase, to recharge it, but this isnot absolutely essential. There is no drain on moon power, such as with abattery. The power is in the moon cord to stay.

WOLF MOON

The fearsome nocturnal animal represents the "night" of the year.Wolves were rarely seen in England after the 12th century. To each Lunarmonth the ancients assigned a name in accordance with the nature of theactivity that took place at that time. The Moon of deepest Winter is the Wolf Moon, and its name recalls a timewhen our ancestors gathered close around the hearth fire as the silence of thefalling snow was pierced by the howling of wolves.Driven by hunger, wolves came closer to villages than at any other time ofthe year, and may have occasionally killed a human being in order tosurvive. The wolf in northern countries was at one time so feared that it became theimage of Fenris, the creature of destruction that supposedly will devour theworld at the end of time. The Christian version of the myth would leave it atthat, but the myth continues.Like the wolf in the fairy tale of Little Red Ridinghood, which preserves thefull idea of the myth but is used only to frighten children, the wolf is slain;and the grandmother, like the world, is brought forth once more.As the light of the new-born year slowly increases and the Wolf Moon waxesfull, it is a good time to look back upon that which has just ended and learnfrom our experiences. Bid the past farewell and let it go in order to receivethe year that has just been born.Learning to let go of that which we would cling to is one of the greatestsecrets of magick.

STORM MOON

A storm is said to rage most fiercely just before it ends, and the year usuallyfollows suit. The Moon following the Wolf Moon is the Storm Moon.Whether you meet with a coven on the night of the Full Moon, salute Her in

a solitary ritual, or simply blow Her a kiss, bear in mind the magick of thisnight and the nature of the storms of February.Unlike the boisterous storms of the light half of the year, which areaccompanied by the clashing of thunder and the flinging of lightning bolts, the storms of February come in silence. They blanket the world in coldness in keeping with the nature of the darkhalf of the Wheel of the Year. But beneath the blanket of cold and silent snow, Nature rests, as we do whenin the realm of the Spirit that is called death; and like those in the world ofSpirit, Nature prepares for life anew.

CHASTE MOON or SEED MOON

The Antiquated word for pure reflects the custom of greeting the new yearwith a clear soul. The Moon following the Storm Moon is the Chaste Moon.Like Diana, chaste Goddess of the Moon, all of Nature at this moment is purepotential waiting to be fulfilled.

The Goddess has many forms:The maiden pure and lovely as the snow of February, the seductiveenchantress of the night, or the Crone ancient and wise.

As the Goddess can change Her form according to the Moon or according toHer will, ever renewing Herself, ever beginning again, se can we, Herchildren, always begin again by discovering new potential within ourselves.

When you cast the Circle of the Chaste Moon, when the candles have been litand the incense burned, look deep within yourself to discover what potentiallies there waiting, like the Maiden, to be fulfilled. As it is the time for the planting of seeds on the material plane, so may it betime to do so on the psychic planes as well. On the night that the Seed Moon(another name for the Chaste Moon) of March is full, cast your magickCircle. Then before the rite has ended, select the spiritual seeds you would like toplant. They may be seeds of wisdom, seeds of understanding, or seeds of certainmagickal skills.

Then by an act of will, plant these seeds in the fertile soil of yoursubconscious mind with the firm commitment that they will be nurtured andcultivated in the months that lie ahead, so that they will grow and flower andbear fruit.

HARE MOON

The sacred animal was associated in Roman legends with springtime andfertility. As the Hare Moon of April waxes full, observe the rabbits leaping andplaying, carefree in their mating and joyful in their games, and as you castyour Esbat Circle and joyfully dance the round, feel within your heart thecarefree nature of the wild creatures that are also children of the Old Gods.

DYAD MOON

The Latin word for a pair refers to the twin stars of the constellation Castorand pollux. This time of the Sacred Marriage of the God and Goddess is the Dyad Moon, the time when the two become one, when all things meet their opposites inperfect balance and in perfect harmony. As you cast your Circle this night of the Dyad Moon, adorn it with appleblossoms, and light candles of white. When the sacred round has been danced, sit a moment and reflect. Seekharmony in all things. As the dark half of the Wheel of the Year balances the light, as heat balancescold, recall the words of the Goddess, "Let there be beauty and strength, power and compassion, honor and humility, mirth and reverence, withinyou."And then before the rite is ended, if it is appropriate, become one with yourworking partner, physically as well as spiritually.

MEAD MOON

During late June and most of July the meadows, or meads, were mowed forhay. After the spectacular flowers of May have passed and the bees have gatheredtheir pollen and nectar, the hives are filled with honey that is waiting to be

gathered. In ancient times much of this honey was made into a drink called mead by afermentation process similar to that of making wine. The "Moon in June" is the Mead Moon.Mead has been considered to have magickal and even life-restoringproperties in many of the countries of ancient Europe, and it was the drinkof many of the great heroes of legend. The legendary figure Robin Hood, who is accepted historically as being acomposite of several peasant leaders during the reign of King Richard I, isalso generally accepted by Pagans as being one of us.

One reason is that Robin was a popular Witch name, and also because hewas always described as being dressed in green, symbolic of the Green Manof Sherwood Forest. Lincoln green, which is made from woad, the dyestuffused by the Picts of ancient Britain and the Druid priestesses, is also a colorthat symbolizes, historically, the Pagan peasantry. Among the articlesrobbed from the rich by Robin Hood are "met and met." This probablymeans "meat and mead."In the myth of Odin, one of His quests is for the Poetic Mead of Inspiration, which He returns to the realm of the Gods where it belongs, but a few dropsfall to Earth, and this may be had by anyone who can find them.On the night that the Mead Moon waxes full, after the Circle has been castand dancing done, fill the cup with mead (if it is available), sweet wine, or anherb tea sweetened with honey. Sip the sweet drink and sit quietly and makeyourself a vessel ready to receive the inspiration of the higher realms.Become a mead cup ready to be filled, not with the brew of everyday life butwith the clear, bright liquid of illumination. Every time this ritual isperformed, even if there are no immediate results, you are becoming a moreperfect vessel for divine inspiration. If the night of the Mead Moon is very close to the Summer Solstice, theresults of this exercise can be very powerful. If the Mead Moon is full onMidsummer Night, then the priestess into whom the Moon is Drawn shouldbe prepared.

WORT MOON

When the sun was high, the worts (from the Anglo-Saxon wyrt plant) weregathered to be dried and stored. As the Wort Moon of July waxes full, this isthe time for gathering of herbs. The word wort is old Anglo-Saxon for "herb."When the magickal herbs have been gathered and hung to dry, the time ofthe Wort Moon is the time to give thanks to the spirits who dwell in the herbgarden, and to leave them an offering.Perhaps as you place an offering in the moonlit garden, they will whisper toyou other secrets of herbal magick.

ARLEY MOON

Persephone, virgin goddess of rebirth, carries a sheaf of barley as a symbolof the harvest. One day at mid-month we realize that the robins and wrens that werenesting nearby have simply vanished.Their lovely songs have been replaced by the shrill calls of the bluejays, whowere so silent during the nesting season. As August progresses the days arestill hot but nighttime temperatures are beginning to cool, and the lateafternoon thunderstorms that bring the cooler air also bring about theripening of tomatoes. In the fields and meadows and along roadside snow there are wild herbs tobe gathered. There are goldenrod, Queen Anne's lace, and milkweed - all awaiting thenatural dyer who can extract from them tan, green, and bright yellowrespectively, for dyes and for natural inks for talismans.Among the medicinal herbs to be collected at this time is boneset, which doesnot help broken bones to heal but is a febrifuge that was used as a remedyfor "Breakbone Fever" in the 1840s.Milkweed pods with their silken fluff, goldenrod, and wild grasses and grainsgathered now will be dried in time to adorn the altar at the AutumnalEquinox. As the aromatic herbs begin to fill the rafters in the dry heat of the attic, andthe braids of onions and garlic fill the cool darkness of the root cellar, thegolden grain and yellow corn ripen in the fields under the waning August

Sun. To the Ancients this was the Barley Moon, a time to contemplate theeternalness of life.Just as we are descended from the first woman and the first man, whodescended from the Gods, so is the grain of the bread that we eat descendedfrom the first grain ever gathered. By ritually eating the Lammas bread weare participating in a chain of events that stretches back through time to theGods themselves. And here before us in the ripening fields is the promise of the future.Everywhere there is abundance in the herb garden, the vegetable garden, thefield, and the orchard. The pantry shelves are lined with glistening glass jars that are filled withcolorful fruits and vegetables preserved for Winter days; quarts of redtomatoes, cucumbers in slices or spears, dark red beets with cloves andcinnamon sticks, the yellow of corn, the orange of carrots - a feast for theeyes as well as the palate. The house is filled with delightful aromas as pickling spices are added tocrocks of brine and exotic chutneys simmer on the stove. But the time of abundance is drawing to a close. The fireflies of June and July have given way to katydids, whose scratchycalls to one another fill the evening air of August with the promise of frost insix weeks.

HARVEST MOON or WINE MOON

The moon nearest the Autumnal Equinox brings a feast from the yearlyharvest to the table.Since wine was, and is, such a sacred fluid, the Pagans of old naturallynamed this Lunar month the Wine Moon.As you celebrate the night of the Full Wine Moon and dance the magickalround in the moonlit Circle, pour some white wine in a silver cup. Before therite is ended, if possible, catch Her reflection in the liquid, then take a sip.As the Moon-blessed wine casts its inner glow, sit quietly and feel your ownspirit, of which the wine is a symbol. As the body is stilled and the spirit soars, feel on this night of magick a senseof the kind of transformation that takes place during true spiritual initiation.Today the term Harvest Moon is applied to the Full Moon nearest to theAutumnal Equinox.

This is because, it is said, in other times when harvesting was done by hand,as the days grew shorter farmers were able to work into the night in thebrightness of Her light.

BLOOD MOON

Marking the season when domestic animals were sacrificed for winterprovisions. At this time of year the abundance of fruit and vegetables begins to slow.It is a time when our ancient ancestors gathered what they could store andthen supplemented their Winter diets either by hunting wild animals or byslaughtering domestic ones.So this Lunar month is called the Blood Moon.As you cast the Esbat Circle on this moonlit Autumn night and fill the cupwith blood-red wine, know that you will be joined in the sacred dance notonly by the unseen presence of departed friends and family so close at thistime of year, but also by the spirits of animals as well, perhaps of those thathave died so that we may have food.In this age of assembly line slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants, it isespecially appropriate that on this night of the Blood Moon we who are onthe Pagan path ritually ask the understanding of our animal sisters andbrothers, bless them, and bid them merry meet, merry part, and merry meetagain.

SNOW MOON

Time heralds the dark season when the Sun is at its lowest and the first snowflies. As the Winter Sun wanes and the Snow Moon waxes full, cast your Circle inthe warm glow of candlelight.Salute the Moon in Her snowy whiteness and breathe in the coolness of Herlight.Become as still as this Winter night, and know that the activity of the warmlight months is behind us.Ahead are the dark months of the year. The Spirit is most active when the body is most still.

OAK MOON

The sacred tree of the Druids and the Roman god Jupiter is most noble as itwithstands winter's blasts. The Full Moon nearest the Winter Solstice is the Oak Moon, the Moon of thenewborn year, the Divine Child. Like the Divine Child who is born to die anddies to be reborn anew, the ancient Oak has its trunk and branches in thematerial world of the living, while its roots, the branches in reverse, reachdeep into the Underworld, symbolic land of the Spirit. As the roots probe downward into the grave-like darkness of the Earth, itsbranches grow ever upward toward the light, to be crowned by sacredMistletoe. At this most magickal time of the year, as the light of the old dying yearwanes and the Oak Moon waxes to full, cast your Circle wearing Mistletoe inyour hair.Let this token remind you that like the Oak, we too dwell simultaneously intwo worlds - the world of physical matter and the world of Spirit. As you invoke the Goddess of the Moon, ask that you become ever moreaware of the other side of reality and the unseen forces and beings that arealways among us.

Moon Magick

Moon Magick

The accumulation and direction of the subtle forces of the moon, is one of thearts of Witchcraft. Moon magic is a personal art, even though there are basicguidelines. In ancient times, witches held the position of the Moonpriestesses/priests. In coastal regions, and upon islands, witches were alsoSea Priestesses/Priests. The use of water from the sea was an importantaspect in Moon Magic (salt being a crystal form). The "charging" of water, and the release of the "charge" through evaporation, was an importantaspect. So too was the soaking of woods and herbs in sea water, which werelater dried, and burned as incenses and offerings.

The use of Portals to gain access to the Lunar Realms, and the building ofmagical images there, is a very important aspect of Moon Magic. The actual"essence" of the power used in Moon Magic, originates out among the stars. The Sun draws in the stellar influences and transmits them into our SolarSystem. The Planets within our System absorb this energy which thenmerges with their own vibrations or energies. The Planets, in turn, thenemanate a composite energy within our Solar System. Each Planet's energyor vibratory pattern is unique, and influences other planetary bodies andforces, within each planet's sphere of influence. This is the basis of Astrologyand Planetary correspondences in Magic (this is how and why it works). TheMoon is the focal point of power upon the Earth. The Moon absorbs, condenses, and channels all of these forces, which are then carried to ourPlanet, upon the Lunar Light Spectrum.

Agrippa, a 15th Century magician, understood these principles when hewrote "...but the Moon, the nearest to the heavenly influences, by theswiftness of her course, is joined to the sun, and the other planets and stars,as a conception, bringing them forth to the inferior world, as being next toitself, for all the stars have influence on it, being the last receiver, whichafterwards communicates the influence of all superiors to these inferiors,

and pours them forth upon the Earth..."

Aradia, the Holy Strega, told her followers to seek the Moon above all others, for the purposes of Magic. In the closing prayer of the Full Moon Ritual, wefind these words which Aradia's followers were later to have written:

" O' Goddess of the Moon...teach us your ancient mysteries... that the HolyStrega spoke of, for I believe the Strega's story, when she told us to entreatThee, told us when we seek for Knowledge, to seek and find Thee above allothers".

Agrippa understood this also, when he wrote, "Therefore. her (the moon)motion is to be observed before the others, as the parent of allconception......hence it is, that without the Moon intermediating, we cannot atany time attract the power of the superiors..." What Agrippa spoke of, iswhat witches have known for Ages: The Moon is the focal point of powerupon the Earth. Without the Moon we cannot make use of the UniversalForces beyond her.

In Moon Magic, the ritual altar is the focal point for the Lunar forces whichare drawn upon. Women are the vessels for Lunar Energy, receiving anddirecting the magical force. Men can also become lunar vessels, but womenare much better suited (as their biology is more attuned to the Moon'sCycles, than are men's biology).

The Moon altar is placed facing the West Quarter. The altar itself should beround, but a square or a rectangle is OK. In the center of the altar, place abowl of saltwater. A white sea shell is then set into the center of the bowl. Asthis is done, whisper the name of the Goddess who rules the current phase ofthe Moon, under which you are working. The new moon belongs to Diana(De-ah-nah), the Full Moon to Jana (Jah-nah) and the waning Moon toUmbrea.

Around the bottom of the bowl. set nine white shells, forming a crescent(horns upward, as in a smile). If the magic is for the gain of something, placethe shells from right to left. If the magic is for the removal, or loss ofsomething, then place the shells from left to right.

As each shell is placed, chant the name of the Goddess who presides over thegoal of the magical influence you desire. Matters concerning "beginnings"are under Diana. Matters involving "forces", energies, or powers are underthe influence of Jana. Matters of Death, decline, and stagnation are ruled byUmbrea.

Censers of Moon Incense are placed around the bowl, upon the altar, forming a triangle (so you have 3 incense containers forming a triangle, withthe Moon Bowl in its center). A reversed triangle (V) is formed formanifestations desired upon the physical plane. Upright triangles (A) areformed for manifestation upon the astral plane.

During the magical work, the energy is focused into the altar bowl (or moonbowl, as it is often called). The solitary method is to "enchant" the water.Begin by passing your right hand, palm down, over the bowl in a clockwisemanner. Perform nine passes, then do the same with your left hand. You willneed to create a Chant which will serve to describe your intent. It can be asimple rhyme, or whatever you want. As you chant, blow gently upon thewater slightly disturbing the surface. Formulate the incantation to be asdescriptive as you can, about what you desire.

Once you have spoken the incantation into the bowl, it is time to release the"charge". One technique for this is to boil the water, and observe the steamas it evaporates. Boil it until all of the water is gone. As the steam rises up,repeat your incantation, and watch the steam as it moves upward. It iscarrying off your magic, so that it may take effect. Think this as you watch it(thoughts ARE things).

Another very old method is to pour out the contents of the bowl into astream, or river. As you do this, you recite a simple rhyme spell, such as : "Water to water witch's spell. I give this stream to speed it well"

FULL MOON POEM

"When the moon rides on highAs she crosses the sky,

And the stars on her gown trail behind. Then we wiccans below,Are with love all aglow,

Just to see her so brightly enshrined.

On the night of Full Moon,As we sing to the tune,

Of the Lady who watches above,We raise high our song,

As she glides by so strong,And we bask in the light of her Love"

The Void of Course Moon

There is a great deal of talk in astrological circles about the Void Of CourseMoon, and it is easy to see how the topic is filled with confusion. After all, there are many people teaching there own definitions of this term, and teaching them as facts, and so their students go out into the field armedwith (they are sure) the 'correct' meaning for the Void Of Course Moon.

What we need to do is seperate the definitions into two categories:1. What is the traditional definition....the one the ancients used?2. What are the definitions based upon modern astrologer's theories and/orobservations?

Traditional DefinitionsI found a very nice instance of the traditional definition in Anthony Louis'"Horary Astrology":"The Moon or any planet is "void of course" when it makes no majorPtolemaic aspects before leaving its sign.Firmicus Maternus refers to the void of course planet as traveling in anaspect vacuum. The five major aspects used to make this judgement are Ptolemy'sconjunction, sextile, square, opposition and trine."Al H. Morrison studied the Void Of Course Moon for over 45 years, and hisconclusion was that the Moon was Void after its last Ptolemaic aspect to theSun or one of the planets, and that the semisextile, quincunx or other minoraspect could not save the Moon from being Void. (He also concluded thatneither Chiron nor the asteroids could stop the Moon from being Voideither.) Al's research supported the traditional definition.

Modern ApproachesMark Lerner, Editor/Publisher of "Welcome To Planet Earth" magazine, hoping to start a dialog on the subject, wrote in the Gemini/Cancer 1995issue of that magazine, "Why only utilize the major aspects from the days ofPtolemy? Why not include the quintile, semi-square, sesquiquadrate and inconjunctaspects? Now that we've discovered the three outer planets (during the last 214 years)and they are included in modern Void Of Course work, why not add Chiron,

Page 53: The Moon - History, Ritual and moregypsey.mavericsa.co.za/pdf/general/mystical_things/moon.pdf · The Moon - History, Ritual and more The Moon. For Wiccans, ... essential in magick,

the Four Main asteroids and other bodies?Where is the logic in this?" He then goes on to ask why we don't include thefour angles, and the arabic parts.

In the same issue, Gregg Castellucci writes, "Technically, the Moon is "voidof course" if it will not make any further major aspects to other planetsbefore leaving a given sign. Quite often, in mundane and horary astrology, avoid of course Moon does point to an apparent lack of momentum in thesituation at hand. But what about the less obvious, the so-called "minor" aspects? Can these betossed aside, disregarded? Is there a subtle difference between the Moon thatwill yet complete one of these before changing signs and the truly void ofcourse Moon that will make no aspects whatsoever? The minor aspects areless obvious, both to the eye and in their expression. When the Moon is void of course except for such an aspect, this may indeedindicate a lack of objective momentum, apparent direction or consciouspurpose. The minor aspect will, however, point to perhaps less obvious butnevertheless related matters that are yet to be encountered before the overallsituation can be declared as having been fully experienced or truly spent."Also in the same magazine, Alex Miller-Mignone writes, "To suggest that theMoon is somehow impaired while still forming its Crescent phase semisquarethe Sun seems to be ludicrous."

And in a recent message about President Clinton's Inauguration (right hereon our own festival list) Carole says, "The Moon is not, as it turns out,void-of-course.In the chart for the start of the oath of office at 12:05:15 EST, WashingtonDC, the Moon is in the second house at 28GE15. It makes a quincunx toJupiter at 29CP47 in the 10th house." She does not say that, according to herdefinition, a quincunx counts....she just states her viewpoint as an absolutefact.

The Current LandscapeI've done a lot of polling among astrologers on this subject. Some stick to thetraditional view, and say that their own experiences back this up. Somemodify this definition by including only two other aspects, the semi-sextile

http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/amethystbt/moonvoid.html (2 of 8) [3/19/2006 10:11:20 PM]

and the inconjunct (quincunx), believing that all aspects involving multiplesof thirty degrees should be considered...and they also say that their personalobservations back them up.There are some who add the semi-square and sesquiquadrate also, but drawthe line there. And finally, we have the astrologers who include all of thequintile family and the septile family in their defintion. (I have yet to find anastrologer who will include such aspects as the Nonagen (40 degrees) or theJohndro aspect (165 degrees), but perhaps some of our readers will volunteerthat they do.)

Everyone can't be correct....either the quincunx keeps the Moon from beingVoid, or it doesn't; either the Moon's influence changes when after the lastPtolemaic aspect even if there is still a semi-square, or the Void doesn't beginuntil that aspect has passed as well. And either the Moon is Void when it makes no further aspects to the Sunand planets but still aspects Ceres, or else Ceres saves it from being Void too. What is the truth?

Some Premininary SuggestionsI don't have an absolute answer, although I sure wish I did. Certainly, I havemy own theory, which I will close this article with.

But first, I would like to make two suggestions:1. When teaching students about the Void Of Course Moon, or writing onthe subject, would astrologers please, PLEASE teach the traditionaldefinition. If they also want to include their own view, or the view of theirfavorite teacher or writer, that is fine.....but then distinguish between them?I am not asking you that you abandon your definition...just don't teach it asthe traditional or only one, please?2. If you teach or write about a non-traditional definition for the Void OfCourse Moon, it would help immensely if you include clear examples ofexactly how the minor aspect saved the Moon from being Void...or how thesquare to Chiron kept it from being Void. If you can show us your reasoning, perhaps we will be convinced.

Some Lines of ThoughtOK, now for my views on the subject. Many of you know that Al H. Morrison was not only my mentor, but myfriend, and so his work on this topic greatly influenced my thinking...I can'tdeny that.I see the Moon as being polar opposite of Saturn, as Cancer is oppositeCapricorn.Since this is the case, they work as a team.....and in order to understand one,you need to comprehend them both. For example, the Moon's cycle of 28 days parallels Saturn's cycle of 28years....and the progressed Moon cycle IS 28 years. Saturn rules structures, limits, and order. It is safe, secure, reliable.....and while not exactly the most exciting, it helpsto enhance our survival in the world by giving us walls to keep the 'bad' stuffout....and to keep us in our 'cribs' until we are mature enough not to need thewalls anymore.

The Moon rules cycles, day-to-day needs/hungers, routines. While it, too, is not in itself exciting, it also helps to enhance our survival byproviding us with food, and teaching us habits that we can rely on, integrateinto our psyche, and then do without thinking (such as 'look both waysbefore you cross the street.')

The Moon's major aspects.....the conjunction, sextile, and the otherPtolemaic ones.....are represetative of the major signposts/landmarks alongits monthly journey. Each is a clearly marked out event, helping to define the structure of thatlunar cycle. As such, each major aspect can be said to be to some extent Saturnian, inthat it gives definition to that moment in time. (Yes, even the trine, because itis a clear, easily distinguishable marker.) I see these aspects as the 'box'containing the package known as the current moon cycle.

When the Moon makes a semi-sextile, or quincunx, the influences are muchmore subtle. Gregg said that himself. They are harder to see, more difficultto put your finger on, and as such are not clear definers of that lunar cycle.Perhaps these aspects are the packing in the box that keeps the contents

from rattling? (LOL) But seriously, they are transition aspects, but not clearlines of demarcation. And the other aspects....quintile, bi-septile....are evenmore subtle. All these aspects are very real...and their influence does appeararound us after the Moon goes Void...but they are not the ones that shapeand mold our day to day existence. When the Moon goes Void, events go off in unplanned directions, and theminor aspects are there to add some color, some flavor, while on the way. When the Moon aspects the Sun, or a planet from Mercury out throughSaturn, this is a clear marker as well. These bodies also help define the cycle's meaning, being potent points ofpower that.At first I thought that Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto....all being beyondSaturn...shouldn't save the Moon from being void. But my experience hasshown that they do...that a major aspect to one keeps the Moon from beingVoid. My only explanation is that perhaps, while they are beyond Saturnthemselves, they are nevertheless major steps on a journey, and so even theiraspects have a Saturn nature. More on those three in a minute.

Ceres and Juno are worthwhile bodies to study in a chart....but they arefinely focused influences.Like the type of siding used on a house, which adds to the value and utility ofthe structure, but is definitely not the walls, ceiling or floor, the smallerbodies add details to the particular cycle, but do not serve to define thenature of it.Even Chiron, which has shown itself to be a powerful force for balance andhealing, is not one of the bodies that contributes to the cycle's structure.(Perhaps it is because Chiron is a comet, not a planet, and focuses more on aprocess rather than an event, that it does not nullify the Void of CourseMoon.)I have a vision of the Moon, while making Ptolemaic aspects, as a kind of aclock, ticking away, measuring, working within the structure the aspectscreate. After the last of these aspects, I perceive the rest of the Moon's path while inthat sign as outside of Saturn.....outside of routine, outside of the predictable, beyond controllable...where time seems bent into all kinds of odd shapes.

Page 57: The Moon - History, Ritual and moregypsey.mavericsa.co.za/pdf/general/mystical_things/moon.pdf · The Moon - History, Ritual and more The Moon. For Wiccans, ... essential in magick,

In fact, the Void time seems to be ruled by Uranus, Neptune andPluto....check out the way things go off into uncharted directions during thenext Void period. I'm not sure I understand how a Moon square Uranuskeeps the Moon from being Void, yet the Void time feels in part like Uranusis in control of the moment. Perhaps it is the aspect itself which keepsUranus-on-out in check, keeping events somewhat under control.

Well, that's my two cents......just a personal theory.....not claiming I'vediscovered the absolute truth!

Moon Song

I raise my arms in greeting As She slips up through the night,The rounded Moon of Mystery,A glowing silver disk of light.

My spirit answers to Her call And longs for wings to fly,That I might seek Her secret place Whose symbol is the sky.

A place of hidden secrets, Of sacred Mysteries old,A place I knew in other times, In temple wisdom no more told.

I struggle to remember All the things I learned before, The forgottenMyseries of the Moon, The goddess and Her lore.

Although my arms reach skyward, I turn inward toward Her voice.I tread the inner labyrinth, Trusting in my choice.

"Seek not without, but deep within."The words are soft and clear.

"Keep faith with Me for thirteen months, The Mother's Sacred Year."I watch Her through Her cycles, As I did in lives before, And follow down

Her moonbeam path To the secret, inner door.

Moon Proverbs & Theories

Moon Proverbs

Pale Moon doth rain,Red Moon doth blow,

White Moon doth neitherRain nor snow.

Clear Moon, frost soon.

A dark mist over the Moon is a promise of rain. The heaviest rains fall following the New and the Full Moons The FullMoon eats the clouds away. A New Moon and a windy night. Sweep the cobwebs out of sight. A Red Moon is a sure sign ofhigh winds. And should the Moon wear a halo of red, a tempest is nigh. Many rings around the Moon signal a series ofsevere blasts. A single ring around the moon that quickly vanishes heralds fine weather. When the New Moon holds theOld Moon in its arms,(ring around the New Moon) disasters occur at sea. Sharp horns on the Sickle Moon indicate strongwinds. When the moon's horns point up, the weather will be dry. When the Moon's horns point down, rain spills forth.Blunt horns on a Crescent Moon presage a long spell of fair weather.

Bizarre Moon Theories

#1 A common belief in the sixth century BCE was that the Earth was a flat disk floating on a vast expanse of water. TheGreeks took this once step further, believing that the heavens formed a dome above, and the underworld formed a seconddome below. A sphere, after all, is much more pleasing to visualize than a half-sphere.Anaximander of Miletus (611 BCE) also held this belief, but tried to explain the heavens even further. His theory was thatthe sphere around the Earth was encased in fire contained in tubes. These tubes needed vents, which were the stars seenat night.

Page 64: The Moon - History, Ritual and moregypsey.mavericsa.co.za/pdf/general/mystical_things/moon.pdf · The Moon - History, Ritual and more The Moon. For Wiccans, ... essential in magick,

He tried to fit the Moon into this wild theory as well. Claiming it was a very large tube vent, he said that it constantlychanged shape, creating the lunar phases. It seems that he had no explanation as to why the Moon appeared solid withfixed features such as craters.

#2 Johannes Hevelius made several contributions to astronomy, but is best known for becoming one of the first men toproduce an atlas of the Moon. Produced in 1647, his atlas named the various features of the Moon's surface. Even thoughhis system was superseded by Riccoioli's in 1651, his atlas was very accurate for its time. Unfortunately, rumor has it thathis original engraving on copper was melted down to make a tea set.

#3 In 1824 Franz von Paula Gruithuisen theorized that the Moon's craters were formed by the impact of otherspace-going bodies. Before that, in 1822, he reported observing a city on the Moon. He claimed to see fantastic artificialworks created by "lunarians" This city was supposedly protected by extensive fortifications. The "city" later turned outto be irregular ridges and jagged peaks.

#4 Sir Wiliam Herschel firmly believed in lunar inhabitants. In 1789, in his journals, he reported seeing many odd thingsregarding the Moon. Herschel also saw towns, forests, and roads on the lunar surface. He even went so far as to say hesaw a circus! Weirdly enough, his son, Sir John, was later used in a huge Moon alien hoax in 1835.

#5 In 1835 a debt-ridden newspaper, the New York Sun, got a boost from a major hoax. Reporter Robert Locke made upa story of unbelievable proportions, yet people ate it up hook, line, and sinker. He claimed to have information from a good source that a Sir John Herschel had discovered a civilization on the Moonmade up of bat people with yellow skin. Animals and plants, up to 130 species, had also been found. Moon alien feverraged through the general population. A group of ministers even made plans to Christianize their new neighbors! Finally, some Yale scientists traced Locke down and forced him to admit fraud.

#6 On a night in October 1939, a weather balloon caught fire and hit the ground near Strafford, Missouri. The next day,the local paper announced that the Moon had crashed and burned on a nearby highway. Not everyone believed it thistime, especially when the Moon mysteriously reappeared in the sky that night.

#7 In 1942 a Mr. Weisberger declared that the geological formations visible on the Moon weren't really there at all. Hesaid that what we were seeing was nothing more than disturbances in the super-thick atmosphere around the Moon.

#8 A man named M. K. Jessup theorized that pygmies traced their lineage back to Atlantis. Claiming that they wereclever, he said that they had invented space ships. When Atlantis was in its last days, these pygmies supposedly jumped intheir spaceships and moved to the Moon. These, he said, were the UFOs people were reporting.

#9 In 1951, a Mr. Ocampo spread wild statements saying that the craters on the Moon were the result of two powerfulraces who destroyed themselves with nuclear weapons of incredible force. #10 Also in 1951, George Adamski, using asmall telescope in his back yard, reported that the Moon was being used as a base of operations by aliens. He claimed toobserve their comings and goings regularly.

In 1952, Adamski said that he met a real Venusian in California. He published his story, and naturally people believed it.#11 Howard Menger published a book in 1959 claiming that he made regular trips to the Moon on an alien space craft. He even had photos to prove it. His photos, however, were quite out of focus. #12 In a book, Don Wilson claims thatNASA is covering up alien activity on the Moon. He takes his claims a step further by saying the Moon is a hollow alienspacecraft. What he doesn't say is why they parked it here.

Moon Gardening

Gardening By Moon Sign

Placement of the moon in the heavens through astrology is not the same asit's physical placement through astronomy. In earlier times, farmers used asolar, lunar and astrological calendar to ensure the proper planting periodfor their gardens and fields. Here in the U.S. Benjamin Franklin publishedthe first horoscopes in his Philadelphia daily, which included a monthlyentry concerning gardening.

PlantingThe water signs are the best for planting. When the moon is in Cancer,Scorpio, or Pisces are the best times. But Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn canbe follow-up alternatives.

Weeding and PlowingWhen the moon moves into Aries, Gemini, Leo Sagittarius and Aquarius, remove weeds and inspect your plants for pests.

New Moon Ritual

The time of the new moon is a time of new beginnings. This period alsorepresents the youthful aspect of the Goddess. In the form of the Maiden, sherepresents youth, change and a fresh start. Children can also be Named andDedications can be made. New Moons are great times to move, start newprojects or cast new spells. It is also a good time to shed your past ills and torefresh yourself for coming trials.

To welcome the new cycle of the moon, you can perhaps try out a newlocation. You don't have to but it can be very nice to try something differentduring this cycle. The New Moon can be thought of as a time of learning.Don't be hesitant to try new spells at this time. You might also like to set inmotion house protections or wards if you have just moved in. Prepare asnormal and decide what you wish to do that will benefit from the powers ofthis cycle. I usually welcome the moon and invoke its powers before I go onto other projects.

In a recent ritual I performed this is what I said;

Lady Moon, your light has just returned,For the cycle of your power.

Maiden, mistress of new beginnings and youth,Your light shine down upon the earth.

Upon night's darkest cloak,Let your mark be spread for all to see,

Glowing ever stronger in the sky.

Tonight let your powers of new beginnings,Wash away the follies of last cycle.

Seep away my weariness and sorrows.Fill me to the brim with strength and hope,

Replace faded dreams with new,And give me the endurance to carry on.

Goddess in the sky, look down upon me,Your Witch, Sorceress and Priestess,

In your presence, gathers here.

As the moon moves through its cycles,May the blessing of the Maiden,Remain strong and surround us.

In the name of the Threefold Goddess,So mote it be.

I really like working my Craft during the new moon. I find myself moreproductive generally during this period and tend to do a lot of cooking at thistime. Non-Magickal projects can be started too. Some people havepreferences of which moon cycle they like best so experiment to find outwhich ones you like best.

Face the altar now. Write down on the paper negative things you wishedremoved from your life (ie..negative thoughts about yourself, bad habits, negative influences of people.) Read each one out loud to the Dark Mother torelease them to Her. Light the paper from one of the black candles and dropit into the cauldron and watch it burn.Say:

I release these unto Your keeping.Show me how to move beyond these negatives into a position of light and

power.

Burn the paper until it is reduced to ashes. Raise your arms in reverence tothe Goddess when the paper is finished and say:

Dark Mother,Crone Goddess,

Wise and Elder One,teach me Your deep mysteries,

the Ancient Goddess magick known to my foremothers and fathers.Guide and protect me, Dark Mother.

Now would be a good time to mediatate and see what insight you may receivefrom the Mother. Or do a spell of some sort. When finished, release the circleas usual. Bury the ashes of the paper somewhere off of your property.
