Started in September 2008, The Monthly Moose is the only student magazine at UiO published entirely in English. It is printed in 500 copies each month and available in paper format in Frederikke cafeteria, Sogn and Kringsjå post box buildings, Amatøren, Kringsjå pub, International Coffee Hour and Chateau Neuf. We do our best to integrate non-Norwegian speaking students into the fabric of student life at UiO and inform them about the significant events at the university and the outside world. We also serve as the "voice" of the international students in the corridors of power, being distributed to significant administrative persons at UiO and SiO.
In September 2010 The Monthly Moose was awarded "Best Publication Award" by SiO and UiO for its integrative and informative efforts.

Dear reader,

The birds are singing, the snow is melting and spring is on its way. However, despite these pleasant distractions, you should remember to do your civic duty as a student: it’s time for you to cast your vote in the elections for the Student Parliament at UiO.

International students at UiO face specific challenges connected to language, accommodation, and the avail-ability information in English. In addition, Norway is considering the introduction of tuition fees for interna-

tional students. In Oslo, where the Student Parliament is intricately connected to the Welfare Council and SiO, as well as the larger political bodies in the government, each vote matters. Additionally, the Student Parliament collaborates with the Inter-national Students Union (ISU UiO), your direct representatives at UiO. The votes of international students are the oil that ensures this collaboration goes smoothly.

Even if you are an exchange student, please vote on behalf of students arriving in Autumn 2011 who will not have a chance to express their opinions. These are im-portant issues, and it is crucially important that international students vote and make our voices heard within the University.

The Monthly Moose has done what it can to put together this brochure to introduce you to the parties running in the election. However, I encourage you to do your own research. Don’t feel you have to take us at our word.

Last year, 3568 UiO students voted in the elections, constituting 13,5% of all stu-dents at UiO. There are no statistics as to how many of these votes were cast by international students. But with 2089* international students studying at UiO, we can achieve many great things. So find a party which aligns with your own views and cast a vote. Discuss the elections with friends and encourage them to do the same. After all, the voting itself takes less than a minute and can be done at any place and any time within the election week, provided you are connected to the internet.

Cast your vote with The Moose of Norway.

ELGskverdig hilsen,Marija _____________________________________________________*Statistics according to DBH (Database for Statistics on Higher Education)

THE STUDENT PARLIAMENTThe Student Par-liament (SP) are the highest elect-ed body for stu-dents at the Uni-versity of Oslo,

working directly to influence the University at the central level. They work to ensure that the students’ wants and needs will be heard in all contexts. The SP has meetings about once a month. The meetings are open to all, and ev-eryone has the opportunity to promote their issues. The SP also elects representatives to a variety of boards and committees. Students sit in ev-erything from the Board Seminar for Science and the Learning Environment Committee to the Board of the Natural History Museum. SP has five elected students who work full time to implement the Student Parliament’s policy. They have offices in Villa Eika, the brown house which sits in the middle of Blindern Campus.

THE WELFARE COUNCILIN OSLO AND AKERSHUSThe Welfare Coun-cil (VT) decides how the money students pay through the semester fee will be used. The VT sets priorities in housing issues, fitness, health care, student media etc, and are funded through SiO.In VT, all educational institutions and nearly 60 000 students in Oslo and Akershus are rep-resented. The VT has six elected students, who work for student welfare. These students can be found on the first floor of Villa Eika. The members of the VT are elected each spring.

NORWEGIAN STUDENT ORGANIZATION (NUS-Norway/NSO)NSO is the students’ national interest group, representing around 200,000 students in Nor-way. Students at the University of Oslo are represented by students selected by the Stu-dent Parliament. Two of NSO’s main causes are the support of 11 months of financial support for students and a push for more student housing across the country.

STUDENT COUNCILSEach faculty has students that work for the students at the faculty. Typical issues these student bodies are working with include the composition of the bachelor’s degree, secur-ing more reading rooms and seminars, and the hiring of professors. In addition, they often organize social programs for students. To find out more about your faculty’s Student Council, go to studentparlamentet.uio.no

DEPARTMENT-AND SUBJECT PRO-GRAM COMMITTEESAt the departmental and program level there exist separate committees with student rep-resentatives. These often work to solve prob-lems with courses and teaching. In addition, many committees are responsible for social programs for students, such as the introduc-tion (buddy) week. Your department or subject program board can be found via studentparla-mentet.uio.no.

VenstrealliansenThe Left Alliance

The Left Alliance is the radical organiza-tion for students at the University of Oslo. Our goal is a democratic and a just University and society. We are fighting for a more democratic university, where ev-eryone has equal opportunities regardless of social class or gender. Our candidates have experience from many different or-ganizations, including political parties, interest organizations and student media. They are all from different programs and faculties. This year’s main issues for our candidates to the Student Parliament are:

Fight against unjust power struc-tures! Radical gender quotas now!In contrast to the conservatives, we believe that inequality is a result of in-formal power structures and a system where men are recruiting men and the objective requirements are second to objective assessments.

Say no to Kopinor’s curriculum monopoly! It’s expensive enough to be a student

as it is, and it is an unfair attack on the students’ right to choose which books and articles you wish to use and pay for!

Don’t give in to the oil lobby, go renewable! The fight against climate change is our time’s major challenge. While the Left Alliance has participated in the fight against oil drilling in Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja, the university uses research resources on mapping oil reserves in the Arctic for Norwe-gian oil companies, arranges petro-leum days at campus and receives money to ensure recruitment to the oil industry. The Left Alliance will be a force to drag UiO in an environmen-tally friendly direction!

No to student fees! A free higher education for all!

SosialdemokrateneSocial Democrats

If you vote for the Social Democrats in the Student Parliament election we promise you to:• Fight for more student housing in Oslo• Reverse the cuts made in education to-

wards the students at UiO

For the Social Democrats, it is a funda-mental right that everybody has the same access to higher education, regardless of economic and social background. We believe that higher education is a public responsibility, and it should be free of charge and available to all. Education is expensive, but ignorance is worse!

For some years, the University has cut the educational budget. This results in less seminars and academic guidance, and threatens the very principle of free and available education for everyone. The So-cial Democrats demands this process re-versed.

The University of Oslo aims to be an in-ternational University, and the Social Democrats understand the value of in-ternationalization, and the integration of international students into the exist-ing academic and social environment. International students are an invaluable resource adding a truly global dimension to the academic and social life at campus and elsewhere.

The Social Democrats demand:• More information in English, both

on campus and in the student newspaper Universitas

• Guaranteed housing for interna-tional students

• More extensive Norwegian cours-es, including free Norwegian courses for SFB-students.

Vote for someone who cares! Vote for the Social Democrats!

Liberal Liste

Liberal liste – Learning, flexibility and environmental awareness

Liberal liste is a social-liberal student party. We believe that education is of value to both the individual and soci-ety at large. Higher education should therefore be available for all. In our opinion, the bachelors degree must be strengthened as an academic entity. As students under an academic degree programme, each bachelor degree stu-dent should be both able and required to write a longer academic essay as a final paper.

Our main goals for the academic year 2011/2012 are:1. More podcasting. Making audio recording readily available to students will aid both those who missed a lec-ture, but also those wanting to revise the curriculum.

2. More non-compulsory work-shops are to be available to students.

3. UiO should aspire to become a more environmentally friendly university.

4. Methods of learning and grade assessment should be fit to the student’s needs.

5. All students should be able to study when, where and however they want to. Seminar rooms, con-sultants, libraries and other resources must also be available to the stu-dents during the evenings and week-ends.

6. Lectures, institutes and the cam-puses must be made more accessible to students that are blind, have decreased mobility or experience other challenges.

Blå ListeBlue List

Blå liste or Blue List is a political party at UiO belonging moderately to the right side of the Norwegian political spectrum. Our main goal is to improve the quality of the lectures you get at the univer-sity. By “quality of the lectures” we mean that you should get more seminars, better teach-ers, more contact be-tween you and your professor, as well as making the lectures available as podcasts. Please contact us at [email protected] and tell us what more you think should be done!

Tim

e!Election time!

- Torkil VederhusTorkil Vederhus, a member of the Executive Board of the current Student Parliament at UiO, is eager to give The Moose readers tips on the elections.

From the 5th of April until the 12th all the students at UiO get the opportunity, yet again, to have their voice heard in uni-versity politics. Absolutely all registered students can vote for one of the eight parties representing their views and opinions. Here’s three reasons why you, as a student who is involved in the inter-national community, should invest some time in the upcoming elections.

Student housing and SiOOne of the main issues for international students last semester was, no doubt, the housing situation. The two-in-a-room so-lution has been quite a controversy. What does this have to do with the elections you say? A lot! Hang on now:SiO, as you might be aware of, is led by students. Students have six out of eleven votes in the board. These students are elected by The Welfare Council of Oslo (Velferdstinget). The Welfare Council is comprised of stu-dents from higher education institutions in Oslo. Almost half of these are UiO-representatives. They are elected from the Student Parliament, based on the results from the Student Parliament election.Got it? Your vote in the Student Parlia-ment election helps to decide which prior-ities your representatives will have when they are later leading SiO. In all of SiO´s history, the leader of the SiO board has always been an UiO student.

Language coursesThe Student Parliament is the highest elected body of students at the University; they fight to get the students’ voice heard, and rep-resent the students’ thoughts. An example of an issue the Student Parliament could support is giving all international students access to Norwegian language courses of high quality. Without your vote, the Student Parliament might pick other priorities.

It makes a difference! The Student Parliament has five students working full-time to im-prove the life of students at the University, and one can notice the difference. Recently, the Univer-sity started podcasting the most popular course, ExPhil. In Janu-ary, Vestgrensa 2 opened with housing for another 200 students. Small and large battles are won all the time and the representatives can’t make the decisions without the students behind them. Your vote is important!

Election

Time! // 15

Okay, so you want to vote, but you don’t know where to start? Here’s how!

Find out what party you want to vote for! There are eight parties to pick from. Four of them are based on political ideologies recognized from national politics (liberal and conservative), four of them are based on affilia-tions at the faculties at the Univer-sity. Read this brochure and/or go to www.studentparlamentet.uio.no to find out what these parties stand for.You will also be able to find the lists at your faculty during the elections, with opportunities to ask some tough questions and a chance to see if you like their answers! Log in to www.valg.uio.no with your username and password from UiO and vote!

That’s all there is to it! Do your duty and vote between 5th and 12th April and notice the changes that will take place in improving the quality at UiO. If you have any more ques-tions about the Stu-dent Parliament or the elections, don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected].

SV-lista consists of students from the faculty of Social Sciences. We have a pragmatic view on the interests of students independent of ideology and party politics. A particular concern is how the UiO can be a great interna-tional learning institution that fa-cilitates a positive experience for in-ternational students. We believe that internationalization is a core com-petence for the UiO and regard the international students to be of great benefit for the student environment.

If you vote for us, we will fight for:Better educationSV-lista wants to ensure that stu-dents are aware of the skills they have acquired after a completed degree, through more frequent and better student guidance at UiO. SV-lista also calls upon more research-based teach-ing, and more methodology integrated in existing degrees. After a completed degree at UiO, students should be in-dependent, and able to critically ana-lyse relevant issues. To reach this goal,

SV-lista wants to introduce classes in library use as part of the compulsory education in all degrees. SV-lista also wants more funding for improving the quality of the education offered at UiO. The different units should get better at sharing teaching experienc-es, both good and bad ones.

SV-lista will also fight for: - Automatic detailed evaluation on all exams, making this evaluation com-pulsory for the evaluating teacher - More seminar classes, organized through a sign up-system - An area in the reading halls where computers are not allowed - The recording of lectures, which should be made available as podcasts

InternationalizationWe are working for the better social and academic integration of inter-national students. We want more courses offered in English in order to promote academic integration. The

education at the university must be of high quality and we want the crea-tion of a language center at UiO to facilitate excellent education in the international classroom.

We want UiO to facilitate foreign exchange by mapping previously accepted courses. This also goes for courses from other Norwegian Uni-versities.

Student WelfareSV-lista are opposed to introducing tuition fees, and have been, and will continue to work to guarantee stu-dent housing for international stu-dents. We will be working for more student housing by putting pressure on UiO and politicians.

We want a City Cycle-rack at Blindern. We want to improve and expand the health care offered at UiO through raising the semester fee, and to have free newspapers at SiO cafés, of which at least one should be in English.

The ”HF-lista” [English: The Faculty of Humanities List] is a group of students dedicated to improving the level of education at the University of Oslo. The main problem, in our view, is the massive university bureaucracy. Today, the task of improving our education is done administratively, without the involve-ment of our lecturers. There is a lot of competence at the University, but with-out places where our lecturers can discuss our education across the institu-tional lines, the spread of best practice is staggered.

Realistlista

Making the good student life a realityWith your vote, Realistlista will work towards making your student life at UiO even better. The well-being of stu-dents, both physical and mental, will be our focus for the next term.

The first and foremost goal of Real-istlista is to be the voice of the stu-dents in the chaotic student life. We think that the lack of general mainte-nance at UiO hurts students the most. Poor ventilation and worn-down sur-roundings ultimately makes your stu-dent life worse. We demand action now!

Our main goals for the next year are: - Refurnish the auditoriums at Vil-helm Bjerknes hus - Strengthen SiOs student counseling, for a better focus on mental health - Easier and longer access to study halls and other areas of learning

We are a group of active and hard-working students who think that we can make a difference in your student life. We want the student parliament to be the true voice of the students. Through tight contact with the local student bodies we will make sure that these important causes will be dis-cussed in the parliament.

The Medical-Dental Student List [MOSL] is made up of student representa-tivess from the faculties of medicine and dentistry, and together with the other faculty lists, we want to make the Student Parliament an arena where student life and studies, and not party policy is in focus. We will fight for acknowledgement of the right for all the representatives in the Parliament to vote in every situation (today student representatives can’t vote in per-sonal elections) and for more practical training in the education programmes for professional degrees (dentistry, medicine, nutrition physiology, lecturer studies, psychology and theology).

To vote or not to vote? Answers from the ISU Board

The Board of ISU (International Students‘ Union) UiO is the direct representative of international students at UiO. ISU UiO is also a branch of ISU Norway, a non-profit organization run for and by inter-national students. On a national level, ISU works with the Norwegian Students Union (NSO). Here at UiO, the ISU Board collaborates with Student Parliament to highlight the problems and concerns of international students. We mediate any problems or issues that arise between international students and other orga-nizations. We also organize trips, sports activities, and cultural events. ISU UiO is also behind the publishing of the English language student magazine The Monthly Moose.

The Student Par-liament elections might seem far away from your daily life. Most of you probably see the Student Par-liament members

as a bunch of smiling people who are making waffles on Friday while chat-ting with students. Yes, that’s them! But there is also a lot more behind it.

As an international student, there are issues which concern you very much. Do you hate that in SiO cafete-

rias you can only use a Norwe-gian credit card? Do you have problems with getting into the Norwegian language classes be-cause of the lack of places? How many Norwegians have you met since you came here? Do you want to read newspapers about what’s going on around the city but there aren’t any in a language you under-stand? Have you heard about the possibility that international stu-dents will pay tuition fees at UiO?

All these issues and much more are questions which concern you! The International Students Union at UiO is your support, and the ISU Board works hand in hand with Student Parliament! We, as inter-national students, need clever and open-minded people in the Student Parliament. Please, come and vote!

Vote for your welfare at the Uni-versity of Oslo!

Participating in the election is an expression of your opinion on things that you are concer-ned with. It is in fact the smal-ler, local or student elections that can influence your life the most.

have what ideas and pick the one that you feel is the most relevant to you.

Even if you don’t care about the quality of student life at UiO enough to become one of the stu-dent representatives, I am sure you still are capable of forming your own opinions, and could name a couple of things that need improving from the top of your head right now. We all spend a lot of time at the university, and so long as we are the stu-dents for whom this institu-tion is purposed, we should all seize an opportunity to impro-ve our time here.

And the Student Parliament is exactly the right means to do so. Not every bureaucrat at UiO will listen to your good ideas, but the Student Parliament will. And the bureaucrats are bound to listen to the Parliament. So if you see space for improvement anywhere at the university, make sure you have YOUR person at the parliament sharing your views.

Student Parlia-ment elections, like any other election, will serve as the

mechanism to bring the successful candidates to a place of influence. These candidates will use this in-

fluence to implement their own policies and agendas once in office. Therefore, it is indisputably vital that we, the internatio-nal students, take part in these elections and vote for the candidate who will work in our best interest. Getting candidates who are willing to focus on interna-tional student issues and coordinate effectively with the International Students Union will undoubtedly be-nefit and improve the future experi-ences of international students.

I would like to address those who most certainly won’t participate in elections rather than those who have not yet determined whether to vote. I ap-plaud you, my fellow non-conformists. Unlike the undecided sissies, we won’t go with the flow, we won’t succumb to the hi-deous paws of Res Publica. There are three good reasons why people should not vote. Reason 1: Democracy is too mainstream. Duh!Reason 2: By not participating in the elections, we can keep the ”I don’t know, I don’t care” attitude as long as we want, relieving our mind of thinking about the things we should influence. Reason 3: It is very comfortable to com-plain about how everything was bad, is bad and will be bad and that everyone else is an incompetent slug. Taking part in elections means understanding of the importance of our vote. And that was cool like what, hundred years ago? That can trigger many uncomfortable feelings. Such as responsibility. Or interest. Or er-

ection-related issues. Sorry, election-related.I say elections suck. There is simply no way or how my voice could be heard through this pointless and probably expensive charade. Oh, wait...

I will be voting because I want to have a choice about who repre-sents me. Among other issues, UiO is currently

debating whether to begin char-ging foreign students tuition, and that would close what was a very important door for me. Now, more than ever, international students need to be heard, and they need to assert why they are important to the culture and atmosphere on Blindern. I want those that make decisions in my name to know I gave them my vote.

I voted last year and even though my party did not get enough votes to be represented in Student Parliament, I am going to vote again this spring. This year, as part of ISU, and as the Chief Edi-tor of The Monthly Moose, I have had a lot of contact with Student Parliament, and I understand the importance of a parliament

that cares about international students. Everyone wants to study at a “good” university, but due to re-stricted resources, some aspects will have to be sacrificed for others. Voting is your first step to set the priorities and state which aspects have to stay.

Started in September 2008, The Monthly Moose is the only student magazine at UiO published entirely in English. It is printed in 500 copies each month and available in paper format at Frederikke, Sogn and Kringsjå post box buildings, Amatøren, the Kringsjå pub, International Coffee Hour and Chateau Neuf. We do our best to integrate non-Norwegian speak-ing students into the fabric of student life at UiO by

sharing information about significant events at the university and the outside world. We also bring the "voice" of international students to the corridors of power, by delivering The Moose directly to significant administrative staff at UiO and SiO. In September 2010 The Monthly Moose was awarded the "Best Publication Award" by SiO and UiO for its integrative and informative efforts.

The Monthly Moose wishes to thank the Executive Board of the Student Parliament and personally Torkil Vederhus for assistance in preparing this issue. (c) The Monthly Moose 2011
