Cheers,

narrowed down to a single concept, in this case our airborne neighbor. Whether you stop by the gallery or peruse the online catalog, you will be surprised by the beauty of this exhibition.

The artwork in the exhibition is available for sale. Prices across the board make NOW a perfect opportunity to start your own art collection or add a work to a collection you have already begun. There is something precious about having art in your life. I like to surround myself with work that captures my imagination, satises my wanderlust and transports me to another place. I wonder which crow will speak to you.

The Studio Door is fortunate to have a cadre of companions who seemingly make magic out of thin air. Thank you to Jenna Jacobs, Jason Katso, Ginger Shulick Porcella, Sandi Cottrell, Patricia Frischer, Kinsee Morlan, Angela Landsberg, Tee Taylor, Chris Smith, Ann Gallagher, Nancy Teague Plank, Dixie McCarty, Crisinda Lyons, Dennis a Dixon, Christina Schulz, Evelyn Loss, Danne Sadler, Je Caarel and countless others for making a dierence. Forgive me if I haven’t mentioned you specically here but please know that The Studio Door is so grateful for the support, kind thoughts and assistance.

Southern California’s GOLDEN Working Artist Kevin Greeland has been seen frequently at The Studio Door in between teaching gigs across the region. We are thrilled that he will be with us for two incredible GOLDEN ARTIST COLORS events. If you are an artist working in acrylics, don’t miss out on February’s lecture demo and weekend workshops. Kevin is an amazing teacher. You’ll nd the details within on page 15.

Drop by the exhibitions this month and ask me about our search for a permanent facility, April’s 50 To Watch and the regional artist call for Open Studios San Diego. Great things are ahead.

This month is a celebration of the crow, the raven and all of the black birds that have arrived in the minds of artists and ended up memorialized within a beautiful work of art. Images of birds came in from all over the US, Canada, England, Ireland, Spain, Lithuania, Israel and New Zealand. Curator Jenna S. Jacobs narrowed down 350 works of art to an essential 90, which are being showcased in two San Diego galleries and expanded to an online galley that allow more works to be seen. It’s such a joy to experience the diversity of creative expression when themes are

THE CROW SHOW: HOMAGE TO THE RAVENTOP HONOR: BEST IN SHOW - PREMONITION

THE CROW SHOW juror Jenna S. Jacobs felt this work in particular was just abstract enough to be interpreted outside the theme of the show while still being fully representative.

“In Montana, my yard is filled with magpies, which are another species of crow and raven. Their essence reminds me to always look within to find my deepest truth; to be in my body and still when answers are needed. Crow also seems like a bit of an alchemist. When I view crow, it's most prominent feature is the side angle of one mysterious eye. Use crow energy to enter the void, the home to that which hasn't taken form yet. All things are possible. In this abstract piece, I use one eye of crow, to remind us to see with our one true eye into the nature and beauty of all things and to allow the great mystery to prevail.”

Gallery Affiliation: Betsy Swartz Fine Art

“My ultimate goal is to have the art that I make look spontaneous. Because I think spontaneity is the purest energy. It’s not forced. It’s clear and very alive.”

Heather Carisch, a former ski racer, is strong and bursting with energy. Yet, it doesn’t take long to notice a vein of tranquility running deep in her being. Her artwork resonates unmistakably with great energy and passion – bold colors and fluid lines give her works a life of their own.

“I want my work to have that life force that’s not blocked by the mind or by human experience and expectation.”

Geoff Feder is inspired by the constant development of the urban landscape and the contrast of progress with the natural world. Geoff juxtaposes industrial material with the fragile subject matter of birds and nature through the medium of welded metals. Graffiti is also a strong element in his work; creating a sense of turmoil, it also represents the passing of time and the imprint of culture.

AVIAN TERRAGLYPHTHE CROW SHOW: Best In ShowBelowSnow and Grass Site Specific Drawing2013

“Avian Terraglyph is a representative image from my most recent body of work that deals with creating art processes and images which have little or no negative impact on the environment. These Eco-Art forms utilize all natural materials that range from the ephemeral to the eternal. Largely exterior site specific by design, the field of work includes giant stone insects, bamboo gourd cathedrals, Torii gates, and large scale lawn drawings in the snow, all documented by photography for exhibition.”

Studio: Uniondale, Pennsylvania

John Meza holds a MFA degree in Painting from Memphis University, and a second MFA in Visual Design with a concentration in Computers from the University of Oregon. As an artist/designer, his work has been recognized, awarded, and published on regional and national levels.

golden dreams

What art do you most identify with?I’m drawn to sculpture, ceramics and fiber art, and then painting — works that blur the traditional line of materials. Perhaps installation sums it up best, a place where all forms can converge to create something. In terms of subject matter I go for fresh contemporary takes on nature and allegory.

Who is your favorite living artist?Well just one seems cruel, I’ll start with the world stage of Anselm Kiefer and Wolfgang Laib and as far as artists here in the states I’d go with Angelo Filomeno, Debora Moore, Marc Swanson and fabric artist Yumi Okita and then there’s the sound-suits of Nick Cave, the landscapes of Wolf Kahn and the list goes on…

What's the last work of art that surprised you?Not to long ago I saw a PBS broadcast of Kelly Rush’s documentary short, Emery Blagdon & His Healing Machine, little snippets of the film and images of his artwork still play on in my brain — if interested you can Google for details.

What's the last exhibition you saw?Gauguin to Warhol: 20th Century Icons from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery at The San Diego Museum of Art.

What's the last artwork you purchased?I bought a few abstract whimsical figurative paintings from California artist Brenda York.

What's your favorite gallery / museum?World stage would defiantly be the Kroller-Muller, one of the finest and largest sculpture parks in all of Europe and close to home would be the deYoung.

What's the most indispensable item in your studio? My GOLDEN products of course!

What's the best advice you've been given? From Nona Bolin, a philosophy professor, in general to read more and specifically to read more philosophy: to realize how the two worlds of art and philosophy are so inextricably linked.

THE STUDIO DOOR 18ISAN DIEGO ARTIST PROFILE

“Art has always been important in my life from the first time I picked up a crayon at the age of three. But it has been through the difficult and transformative experience of healing from cancer that art has taken on a special meaning in my own healing process. Creating art is what sustains my heart and soul. It allows me to live fully engaged in the moment, and in creative flow with the universe. When I paint, I don't have to think about what the future holds or how long I may or may not live. When I paint, I can leave my fears and my hopes on the canvas, and express emotions that can be difficult to explain in words.”
