The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition
is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program
for students.
Future City Competition
Future City Competition is four-part competition:
Students utilize SimCity software to create a city of the future
Students write an abstract and essay
Students build a model of their future city using recycled materials
Students deliver a presentation to a panel of judges
They smile because they know not what work awaits!!
Part One of Competition Preparation:
SimCity 4 Deluxe
Research,
research…
…and research!
Mrs. Johnson, I am way too busy
researching to pose for a picture right
now!
Okay, one quick smile! But make it
snappy!
Robert Researches himself to sleep…
Brainstorming is so much more fun when we get to write on the board…

Mr. Bing’s “Awe” picture…
No really, no need to help me with
this. By all means, take a picture of me
instead.
Another inch and my hair will
completely block my view…mission

“Water pipes”
To the untrained eye: empty bottles on plywood
To the Future City Team: the beginning of their vision becoming a reality
I am so glad that SunSand City has organic rooftop gardens...finally I am not the only health conscious
person in this room!
I have made hundreds of these!
Whose idea was it to have cacti in our model?
Yeah. I was dreaming about making these last night. We might have
reconsidered the desert location.
Things begin to take shape
Engineering skills are put to practice!

The End Result
What can happen when everyone is dedicated and
works together with a common purpose:
Presentation preparation begins…
Unfortunately, “TechSpecs” do not function
as safety goggles…
…because Mrs. Johnson’s preparation techniques
can be hazardous!
Preparing for Competition Day:SunSand City
tie dye team shirts
I’ve done this with Mrs.
Carbone a million times…I’m becoming
an expert!
Don’t let them see you
smile…it’s a sign of
weakness
If I wait long enough…news
cameras will be here for me too…I know it
Sure they will, Mr.
Nap…sure
Is it me, or do they seem really
impressed?
Will he get mad at me if I
bite the microphone?
Is she going to bite the
mic?
LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design.
*phew*If I forgot that, I
would have been chanting it
in EXCEL for the next month.
Please edit this to make
me sound smart
…so really, the reason we came in on Saturdays had more to do with
pizza, snacks, and the occasional visit
from Mrs. Johnson’s baby
Now I know why the kids looked so nervous…can he
tell that I am sweating right
now?
I’ve been working here for years, and I
still haven’t been offered a special t-
shirt…this is messed up.
…and how exactly would you spell that: “re-sourch”? Is that Latin?
Awe. The kids look and sound
so great!
I hope that they don’t put me on
t.v. I am still wanted in 5 states
How many gold
buttons is she

The Judges…
The Team of SunSand City
The people who made it all possible
The pressure…
Mrs. Johnson told us it’s not about the reward, but they sure do look pretty.
