But due to the l en gth o f t ime in vo lved and t o other sub s equen t circums t ances in the c as e whi ch coul d no t have been c aus e d by de lirium , it w as e l imin at e d by the psych i atri st as an exp l an at ion for the mi s s in g s even hours .

The third cat e gory w as thought t o b e the corre ct int e rpre t ation . In other words Gerry was almost as suredly phys i cal ly removed

Cl as s i fying th i s as an ex amp le o f b e in g removed from our frame of re al ity is a s omewhat question ab le cat egori z ation , but the re ader wi l l prob ab ly agree that th is i s not the usual type of o ccurren ce one woul d as s o ci at e w i th our con cept of everyday real event s . The psychi atri st was unab l e to acert ain wh i ch of these two me ch an i sms was the c as e , but s t re s s ed that thi s was no t an overly import ant po int . What was re l evant w as the fact that Ge rry did h ave c ont act with inte l l i gent non -human beings .

Even though he was not ab le to dete rmine whi ch me chanism was invo lved the psychiatri st neverthe l e s s expre s s ed the op inion that it was prob ab ly the forme r , name ly , Gerry proj ect ed hims e l f to ano ther re al i ty . A cas e in point would be h i s st range t rip to Ni agara F a l l s ( see The Missing Seven

Other cas e s in whi ch the psych i atri s t h ad been in vo lved inc lude th at of a woman who i s app arent ly abl to proj e ct hers e l f to other p l anets and pain t l ands capes o f the s cenery she ob serves . Hi s opini on in thi s case h as been con curre d with by psychi atri sts in Ge rmany , South Ame ri ca and New Ze a l and who h ave also examined t woman . There i s no proof , o f course , but the qual i ty o f the e xperi en ce s she de s cribes are s imi l ar t o Ge rry's .

P sychokinet i c ab i l ities h ave been di sp l ayed in s ti l l other cas es he h as han d le d . A woman in h i s o ffi ce un con s cious ly caused an asht ray to l i ft from a t ab l e , cro s s the room , and turn ups i de down ove r h i s l ap . She was j us t as amazed as he , but admi tted when que st i oned that she ob j e cte d t o his smoking in her p re s en ce . In another ins t an ce it was reve al ed th at a woman consulting him h ad un cons cious ly caused a co at rack to fal l on him durin g a moment in whi ch she fe l t ange r t oward h im . Thi s woman even tual ly l e arned to cont ro l her psychokin et i c ab i l i ty . E ven though mos t of Ge rry's app arent psychok ine t i c ab i l i ties seem invo lun t ary , the psych i at ri s t fee l s th at he too may even tual ly le arn to contro l them , and thus fe as ib ly 'go anywhe re ' .

Al though in The Missing Seven Hours it was specul ate d th at the re may be s ome connection between the vari ous e xpe rien ces o f the Arms tron g fami ly , the doctor fe lt th at thi s was no t nece s s ari ly the c as e , and sugges ted th at Ge rry' s percept ive ab i lit ies may be further deve loped th an most , or th at he may even h ave an ab i lity to actual ly b ring the s e events ab out . He is a cre at ive pe rs on , un afrai d o f app aren t i rrat ionalities , and would not ment a l ly 're make' h i s experien ces to con form with expe cted re ality as s omeone l e s s in c l ined mi ght do . The re i s a di stinct pos s ibi l i ty th at he i s now more at tuned t o othe r re al i ties , an d as such h as de ve loped more psych ok inet i c ab i l i t ies .

As far as the me aning o f the seven hour encounter i s con ce rned the psych i at ri st fe e l s the re w as no purpos e other th an j ust t o make cont act . I n brie f , un de r hypnos is Arms trong remembered two al ien ap pe arin g b e ings who accomp anied h im t o a 'spaceship' des cribed as a b al l of l i ght , an d who then took him on b o ard . He w as shown things by di ffe ren t beings who di d mos t o f the t al k ing , and he was app arently to ld nothin g he di d not al re ady know or would not eventual ly know at s ome future po int in time . (One won de rs j us t h ow much o f wh at h e was ·to ld in fluence d wh at was to be h i s way of thinking in l at e r ye ars . )

I t i s ce rtain that in the twenty- five ye ars between the event an d the re gres s i on s ome det ai l s h ave been l o s t whi le others may h ave een revis e d or re organ i zed by his uncon -

s c i ous . Had thi s event happened to him more recent ly , some of the de tai ls may have been remembered and des cribed quite di ffe ren t ly . Neve rthe less , the psychiatri s t fee l s the e s s en ce o f h i s expe rien ce i s s ti l l the re - Gerry di d have con t act with nonhuman beings , this contact in i t i a l ly fri ghtening him . I t s eeme d to him th at he was p i cked up and carried to the 'ship' by two of these beings , but thi s may be a re - cons tructi on s in ce i f he di d invo lunt ari ly proj e ct himse l f to anothe r re ality he wou l d not h ave been ab l e to exp l ain i t at twe lve ye ars of age , and thi s may have been his way of res o l ving the experien ce .

I t wou l d be impos s ib l e on the b as i s o f hypnos i s al one to di s tin gui sh whether the sub j e ct was rep orting wh at he actual ly e xpe ri en ced during the s even hour period or was us ing conven ient symb o lism to convey the impre s s i ons to whi ch he was subj e c t . I t is pos s ib le th at the experien ce was s o b i z z are th at it was impos s ib le for Arms trong to de s cribe i t us ing termino logy from our con cept o f re al i ty . Wh at Ge rry s aw as a ship , or wh at he s aw as a room ins i de the ship may not have been a ship or a room at al l , but these terms were the cl os e s t he could use t o convey wh at he h ad s een . The s ame comment goes for the l adde r . I f Ge rry and the bein gs on either s i de o f him 'fl oate d' to the ' ship ' , why wou ld the re have been any need for a l adde r to 'cl imb aboard'? 'Ladde r' may h ave been the on ly word he could think o f to convey his me aning . Thi s i s furthe r i l lus t rated by

Studen ts o f the B ib le wi l l rec al l Jacob 's l adde r whi ch i s int erpreted symbo l i c al ly by most , whe re as Jacob ce rt ain ly seemed to des cribe it as a l adde r in h i s dre am. I t was to s e e i f symb o l -i s m was invo l ved th at the psych i atri s t sugges te d to Ge rry th at "the hi dden meaning of the room" would be reve al ed , that the being in red was a symbo l and wou l d "change into something", that the sh ip was a symb o l an d was go in g to ch ange i n to wh at it re a l l y was , in e ach cas e at the count o f th ree . Th is pro ces s was not ve ry frui t ful s in ce the room re ve al e d "every thing - al l things - al l is one.- they do know all things " , the being in red was reveale d to be a "teacher. . . his form is the same . He only says to teach", whi le the ship s t ayed the s ame , "i t has no t changed". I t wou 1 d s eem th at i f Gerry was des crib ing h i s experien ce us ing symbol i sm he certain ly had an experien ce o f an extreme ly met aphysi cal nature . The other al ternat ive i s th at he des cribed the even t as it actua l ly happened .

Even though the psych iatri s t gave h i m amnes i a at the en d o f the hypnos i s se s s i on to prevent the sudden t rauma of rememberin g everythin g at on ce up on awakening , he fee l s th at over a period o f time Gerry wi l l rememb e r the

C AS E COMPARIS ON S

In view o f the l arge number o f purported UFO abduct i on s during the l ast few ye ars an d the app arent wide vartety of characte ri s ti cs di spl ayed in these en coun ters , i t may be me re ly an academi c exe rci s e to note any simi l arities among such in ci dents when they app e ar to -be outnumbere d by di s s imi l ar ities . Neve rth e le s s , in the in tere s t of t ryin g to as certain any common thre ad , no matter how tenuous , i t i s o f value to compare s ome aspects of Arms tron g's expe rien ce with thos e of a few other we l l known cas e s . Some of these fact ors could be h i ghly s i gni fi can t if the percipients are in fact des cribing the i r en counters as they re al ly h appen ed , rather th an re s ort ing to symbo l i sm .

P at ro lman Herb S chirme r expe rienced a UFO en count er whi ch took p l ace on De cember 3rd , 196 7 outs i de Ash l and , Nebraska . The re we re seve ral s imi l ari ties in the appe aran ce of the o ccup an ts . They were t iny , about four and a hal f feet tal l with whi t is h - gray skins , smal l mouths and funny eyes . Communi cation was not ve rb al but seemed to be on a ment al l e ve l , an d both men experienced p ain when re ce iving communi cation . In b oth cas e s the percip ien ts were s o ast on i shed at what they were experiencing th at they were on l y convinced they were not dre aming when they were touched by the ent i ties . Another int e re s ting as pect i s the role p l ayed by the win ged s e rpent in e ach case . Under hypnos i s S ch i rmer drew a p i cture o f the al ien beings an d their uniforms and noted they wore a winged s e rpent emb l em on thei r ri gh t ches t . In The Missing Seven Hours it i s re l ate d th at a s i l houette drawing o f a win ged s e rpent mys te ri ous ly appe ared and l ater di s appe ared from the Arms t rong girls ' b l ackboard short ly afte r Mr . and Mrs . Armst ron g tried ( and ap p arent ly p artly succeeded) t o make cont act w i th a UFO p as s in g overhe ad .

In the Arms tron g re g res s i on t apes i t was re ve a led th at at ab out the time Gerry cl imbed the

When he was found by his cl as s mate s an d te achers h e no ti ced a burning s ens at i on at the b ack o f his ne ck , and it was con fi rme d by the camp do ctor th at it was red an d sore . S chi rme r h ad the s ame prob l em . He had a red we l t running down the nerve cord of h i s neck , ri gh t be low his l e ft e ar . The re h ave been s eve ral ins t an ces whe re the ap pe aran ce o f a red we lt on the b ack o f the n e ck s eems to be re l ated to an al leged UFO ab duct ion . Another examp le was the cas e invo lvin g at t orney Raymond She are r (a ps eudonym) whos e en counter o c curred in Apri l , 1 9 70 j us t out s i de Madi son , Wis con s in . The inci dent fo l l owed the fami li ar pattern di s p l ayed in S chirme r ' s and Betty and B arney Hi l l ' s

Fo l lowing h i s en coun te r , whi ch al s o invo lve d time l os s , Sheare r di s cove red a sma l l , tende r we l t on the back o f h i s neck . By noon of the s ame day the we l t had b l i ste red up , becoming extreme ly sore and p ain ful . A doct or ' s examin at ion th at afternoon reve a l ed s cores o f t iny perforat i ons of the skin within the we l t . The doctor put some s a lve on it and it gradua l ly went away .

Later , during re gre s s ive hypnos i s s e s s i ons , it was reve al e d th at s e conds afte r he stepped out of his car he fe lt a s li ght tin g l in g s ens ati on ove r h i s body . Re cal l that Armst rong a lso fe l t re l axed aft e r the pressure on h i s neck .

Furthermore , as with Armst ron g and S chirrner , when She are r was cl imb in g aboard the craft he found the l adder and the ins i de of the ship to be ve ry co l d .

Ano the r s imi l arity i s that i n e ach o f the three cases the pe rcip ient even tual ly found h ims e l f s t an din g i n front o f a s creen l ike devi ce . Armst rong ap paren t ly viewed h i s l i fe on the s creen , S chi rmer s aw s cene s out s i de the

He w as a lso t o ld they us e the s creen t o see out s i de the craft . When Armst rong was t aken for a ri de ( or s o i t s eemed) the s creen was ap parent ly us ed t o show him the p l anet he was from (pre sumed t o be E arth) , and l ater , the s creen s eemed to be used as a te aching devi ce .

At the beginning o f h i s encounter , Ge rry was moment ari ly p aralyzed . ("Can ' t move . . . can ' t nvve my Zegs ") . S ch i rmer like wise s uffere d temporary paraly s i s as he app roached the UFO . Thi s fee l ing o f paralys is i s a l s o common t o many UFO incident s when a c lose approach to the craft or o ccup ant s o ccurs .

Simi l arly , n e ar the end o f the firs t Arms t ron g re gre s s i on se s s i on on July 19 , 1 9 78 it was apparent that Gerry was also in commun i c at i on with h i s b e in gs : Q: What do you see? ARHTUR : Yes , my interest s tarted b ack in 1 9 4 7 or 1 94 8 when UFOs firs t came t o pub li c attention . I was a n avy pi lo t at the t ime and I be came interested j ust out of curi os i ty b e caus e I was flyin g around the sky . I think

I ac cepted an in vitation t o pres ent a course at Al gonquin Co l l ege on thi s bas i s because I fe l t that thi s was an opportuni ty to educate the pub l i c concerning the fact s , and I have always taken thi s approach with respect to a l l the media as wel l . I think that one of the biggest d i ffi cu l t i e s that ufo l og i s t s face is the lack of knowl edge on the part of the genera l pub l ic , and I think that onc e the genera l pub l i c i s more knowl edgeab le o n the subj ect res earch wi l l bec ome much eas i er . Government s are covering up but I think i f enough peop l e know the facts about UFOs , then more pressure can be put on the governments to re l ease their informa t i on .
