In January, retired teacher and avid Dawson Creek volunteer Margaret Sutton was among 24 people to receive the Gov-ernor General’s Caring Canadian Award. The award was presented at Government House in Victoria by the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia on behalf His Excellen-cy the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.

“It was amazing but I feel very guilty because there are a lot of other people

who do lots of volunteering, too,” says Sutton. “I was fortunate just because my friends nominated me.”

Did you know that the instinct to eat is very strong and pets will often eat even if they are in in extreme pain? Don’t assume your pet will tell you there is something wrong with his or her mouth by not eating.Check your pet’s teeth regularly by lifting their lips and trying to get a look as far back as you can.Red or infl amed gums, brown tartar build up on the teeth or brokenteeth are not normal and need to be addressed. Make sure to bookyour complimentary dental exam for the months of January and February.

People of the Peace

A generous spirit is rewardedMargaret Sutton:

Continued from Page 1The Caring Canadian Award is

no small matter though, requiring three references along with the application. Realizing what an honour it was, Sutton’s three sons accompanied her to the ceremony - flying in from Ottawa, St. Albert and Dawson Creek.

Sutton moved to Dawson Creek on July 1, 1974 for her husband’s job and taught at McLeod Elemen-tary, Tremblay School and Pouce

Coupe Elementary. She retired early to work as a bookkeeper in her son’s business, offering her more flexible work hours - allow-ing for one of her earliest ventures into volunteerism.

“The thing I’ve done the lon-gest that I’m still doing is I run the visually impaired support group,” explains Sutton. “We have a group once a month, we’ve been having it now, must be close on 15 years. I make the lunch and then there’s a dish and they put in some money - maybe $2. some put in $5, I don’t really know - just enough to cover the cost of the ingredients. I make a couple of soups and bread and cake and then we have tea and coffee.”

The idea for these informal luncheons for the visually im-paired community came about 15 years ago through discussion with a friend of Sutton’s who is visually impaired. A representative from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind was up for a visit and commented on it being a shame that there wasn’t a local group for the visually impaired community. From then on, there was.

“We are very, very fortunate that the First Baptist Church al-lows us to use their building for nothing and it’s great because it’s all on one floor, there are big windows so it’s nice and light, the room we’re in we can turn the heat up so we’re not cold,” explains Sutton.

Providing the lunch for 16 to

20 people at each meeting is a cumbersome task and she says she has looked into bringing in prepared food but the added cost might exclude some members, which is not the intent.

As well as the lunch, Sutton brings in programming for the majority of the monthly gather-ings that has included speakers such as local politicians, Rotar-ians, kinsmen, a chiropractor and an optometrist.

“A couple of months ago I didn’t get around to getting a speaker and so after we finished eating I turned and asked one fellow: ‘When did you come to Canada from Germany?’ and he said ‘in 1948’.” With the majority of the group members in their 80’s, Sutton says it turned out every-one found each other’s stories so fascinating, none of them got up to leave.

“It was so interesting and they liked it so much that now I’m working on getting Jennifer Fox at the high school to have her kids come and do interviews so we get more oral histories,” explains Sut-ton, though she hasn’t brought the idea forward to the group yet.

That is just one of her plans that is still in the works and as we continue to chat another idea comes up that Sutton says might make for a good speaker at the workshops she organizes through the South Peace Seniors’ Ac-cess Services Society. Sutton is a charter member of the non-profit’s

A generous spirit is rewardedboard, one of the sponsoring organizations for Better at Home.

The workshops run every two weeks and Sutton says they provide the sort of information that the community needs and may not know where to find. Workshops have included talks by Service Canada, Service BC and Peggy Bergeron of Bergeron Funeral Services and Crematorium.

“Peggy has come and talked about: ‘what do I do now?’” explains Sutton. The talk gave information on what to do when a loved one passes away whether it is at home or away, and different things that need to be considered.

“I find all of the workshops very interesting, even if they’re not particularly relevant to my situation, I still find them very interesting,” says Sutton.

Other workshops have brought in the police to speak about scams, the Crown Council speaking on representation agreements and power of attorney, as well as some lighter subjects such as scrap-booking and bridge playing. Sutton has also hosted work-shops on osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and medica-tion awareness. Last year, she organized a pharmacy tradeshow that brought some of the local pharma-

cists out with products that aid the senior citizens.“It’s just, whenever anybody says, ‘Could we have

a workshop on ‘ I try and find it,” she adds that all workshop are hosted by volunteers, no one is paid to come in. “I think it’s wonderful that people are will-ing to give their time.”

Sutton sees great value in the workshops and with consistent attendance, the community seems to as well.

“If you don’t continue to learn, you begin to die we’re all supposed to be learning all of the time, aren’t we?” says Sutton. “The notion that because you’ve reached that age that calls you a senior that you’re supposed to spend your life sitting in a chair watching television to me, that’s the beginning of dying. You’ve got to keep going.”

It’s a mantra that Sutton takes to heart, adding to her resume a director role on the board of the BC Retired Teachers’ Association.

“With them I also got trained through COSCO, which is the Council of Senior Citizens Organizations of BC, to give workshops on health and wellness for seniors. There are actually about 35 workshops now Continuted on Page 12

With just 20.1 seconds remaining, the lead that the DawsonCreek Junior Canucks had des-perately been trying to defend slipped away.

The Junior Canucks would eventually fall 4-3 in a shootout to the third place Fairview Flyers at Kin Arena on Friday night in North West Ju-nior Hockey League action.

The spirited affair, that included two fi ghts in one stoppage midway through the game as well as some three on three overtime action, didn’t end up the way the Jr. C’s had hoped but head coach Eric Fulton praised his group’s ef-fort post game.

“I’ve been proud of lots of hockey games playing in them and coaching in them but to-night’s effort was one of the best I’ve seen for how short our bench was,” he said Friday night. “Ken Dryden was the one who said it, hockey doesn’t build character, it [reveals] it. And it showed our character tonight. Everybody did a

good job pulling together.”After falling behind early on in the fi rst peri-

od, the Junior Canucks battled back with a goal from Colin Mathieson before letting in a costly goal late in the fi rst period.

In quick succession midway through the second period the home side snatched the lead away from the Flyers, with goals from Colton Gies and Justin Greyeyes.

Throughout the rest of the game the Junior Canucks battled through plenty of penalty trouble and relied heavily on goaltender Josh Round, who made 37 saves in the loss and was once again praised by his coach post game.

“It does help the team, it’s getting a little mundane a bit because he kind of plays that way every night,” Fulton said.

“It’s tough to say you expect your goalie to be the best player on the ice every game, but he is. He’s consistently the best player on the ice.”

from all over the ice, Flyers forward Doug Morris who had three points on the night, cleverly picked up a puck off the boards behind the net and tucked it in front before a teammate jammed it in to tie the game.

“If it wasn’t for a kid picking a puck up off a rim that was a pretty spectacu-lar little move— it wasn’t the goal I was impressed with it was picking the puck up around the boards that was pretty nice. They worked hard, they worked just as hard as we did, and the

game went the way it went,” Fulton said.

Morris would finish the night as the villain, saluting the jeering fans after scoring the only goal in the shootout.

The ridicule came in part from an injury in the final minutes of the sec-ond period when the Flyers star laid wincing in pain on the ice before being helped off by his teammates.

He returned in the third period to

play a regular shift and caused some questions about the severity of his in-jury in the first place.

Fulton said that he expected a phys-ical game from the outset and thought his team delivered in that respect but just came up short on the scoreboard at the end of the day.

“They are a big team, they are a talented team and if you don’t bump them and get in their face and make ‘em not like you then they are going to run all over you and I thought we did a great job of that,” he said.

Dawson Creek also squared off against the league leading North Peace Navigators on Sunday but results were not available at the time of press.

Next up for the Junior Canucksis a rematch with the Fairview Fly-

ers on Friday, January 30 before a four game road trip to round out the sea-son.

LifestyleA survival guide for Valentine’s Day

How will I survive Valentine’s Day? It’s a question that many people ask themselves when the red hearts start to appear in stores at the beginning of February. For some of us, it can be hard to stop this Valentine’s Day anxiety from building up to alarming levels. If that’s how you feel, here are some tips to help you make the best of the festival of love and avoid all of Cupid’s traps.

COUPLES Does your loved one claim that

Valentine’s Day is not really all that important to her? Don’t fall into the trap of not doing anything for her on this special day! It’s quite possible that she’s calling your bluff. Despite her apparent indifference, she expects to receive a little something, even if it’s only a card. Yes, it’s a contradiction, but that’s the way it goes.

Do you have kids? It’s important to depart from your usual family routine

for the day or at least plan a romantic evening together. Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to renew the ties that Continued on Page 10

Local Reflectionswhere have the dogs gone?

Jonny Wakefield / STAFF WRITER

Dan Stevenson last saw Axel and Jaxxie on Jan. 13.

On that day, the pair of eight-month-old Rottweilers disappeared without a trace while wandering his acreage outside Dawson Creek.

"We've been looking for them, our neighbours have been looking for them, my wife has shared their photos on over 20 different social media pages to try to get our dogs back," said Stevenson. "It's

not a matter of whether they went miss-ing, it's who took them."

Rumours run rampant on social me-dia about what’s happening to the dogs, but RCMP in Dawson Creek say only two people have come forward to fi le a police report.

Without more to go on, there’s no way to conduct a wider investigation into missing dogs, police say. Sgt. Ed Reinink said the detachment is aware of rumours that “a large number” of dogs have been

stolen, possibly to feed dog fi ghting rings. “There are always rumours about dog

fi ghting rings, but have we been able to track one down? No we haven’t,” he said. “We’re not saying it’s not true, but we also haven’t had many people coming forward to us with information.”

if you’ve just broken up. But isolating yourself at home and succumbing to the dan-gerous trio of romantic movies, pyjamas, and chocolate certainly won’t help you in any healthy way. All it does is guarantee depression.

Distract yourself instead. Plan a night out with friends, go out for a drink in a bar, or participate in a singles’ activity. Who knows, your new soul mate may be there as well. Remember that Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love in all its forms. Take the opportunity to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you; that includes your parents, siblings, children, and friends.

breeds — like boxers, pit bulls and Rott-weilers — are being targeted.

Neighbours have had similar issues — including one who reported a pit bull stolen from inside their locked home. Stevenson said the dog was later found dumped along the Alaska Highway near the Kiskatinaw River. It had been “shred-ded” by what appeared to be wounds in-flicted by another dog.

RCMP had received a report of a pit bull stolen from a yard, but could not confirm whether the dog was found dead.

While social media posts about the dogs have turned up leads, Stevenson is frustrated many of the people sharing in-formation online haven’t taken the con-crete step of filing a police report.

In one case, he received a Face-book message with the license plate number of a suspicious vehicle.

“You’re going to send me a license plate number?” he asked, incredulously. “Why didn’t you send it to the RCMP?”

Reinink said police are following up on a tip about a license plate, but that the

small number of cases on file does not yet warrant a larger investigation into the dog disappearances.

Stevenson said that while he believes his dogs are gone for good, he hopes people will pay closer attention and report missing dogs to the police.

“We’re having a real problem, and that’s that people are not willing to come forward to the authorities and give a state-ment of what they’ve seen and heard,” he said.

Continued from Page 3on all kinds of health issues.”COSCO works closely with the BC Retired Teach-

ers Association and Sutton has held workshops for various organizations in Dawson Creek, as well as in Groundbirch.

“It’s very different standing in front of a group of adults and a group of children. Give me children anytime,” Sutton laughs, saying that the groups have all actually been very good.

Sutton’s volunteerism extends to her church community, working as the kitchen steward at the Alliance Church. She also went on a 10-day mission trip to Cuba last year, working with about 60 local pastors’ wives.

Sutton sits on the board of Young Life, a Christian group that builds positive relationships with chil-dren, hosting a weekly gathering at the Ark - where she used to volunteer and sit on the board as well.

Her involvement with the Ark now is in helping organize the yearly banquet.

“They serve a roast beef dinner at the Ark for about 200 people but they don’t have a kitchen so you have to arrange to do it some place else,” says Sutton. The event is a day-long marathon of food prepara-tion, bringing in Michael French of Northern Lights College, Don Moore at the Butcher Block, members of St. Mark’s and various others to put the meal together.

“I do that but that’s only once a year,” Sutton says, saying it is quite the event.

Through the various organizations Sutton is in-volved with, she says the need for further volunteer-ing seems to become evident. “That’s made me a lot more socially aware of what’s going on in the world,” says Sutton.

Before I arrived, Sutton was on the phone with an elderly woman asking whether she’d like to go out for the day - since the woman can’t drive herself. She does that a few times a week.

“I just see needs,” says Sutton. “When I see a need, if I’ve got the time and the energy, I try and do it.”

At the moment, she has an idea towards a pro-gram supplying prepared meals at a low cost for shut-ins. Similar programs operate in other cities such as Calgary and Chilliwack.

“We would sell them at a very low cost, frozen and then people can put them in their freezers and use them,” Sutton explains. “I would like to do that and we’ve got this Food Safe-approved kitchen at the church and the health inspector, said ‘No, you wouldn’t have a problem’, so I’ve got to actually get going on it.”

She hopes the program would qualify for a New Horizons for Senior’s Program grant from the federal government, when they begin accepting applications again. Sutton rightly says there is a lot to be done.

“I’ve got to give back, I’ve got the time, I’ve got the energy, I’ve got the ability to do these things,” says Sutton. “Why not?”

A generous spirit is rewarded

Carole Fridriata Hogg was born on the farm in Saskatchewan in February 1936. She was the second youngest in a family of 10 siblings, born to Adam & Regina Frey. Carole grew up on the farm in Saskatchewan until the family moved to Whitelaw, Alberta when she was 14 years old.

Carole had an early fi nish to her formal education in Blue Sky, AB. Her love of music was cultivated while working in a record store in the town of Peace River in her early teens.

Carole started her career as a switchboard operator in Fairview, AB. And then in 1954 she and some girlfriends moved to Dawson Creek, and continued working on the switchboard in the basement of the Bings furniture building.

During that same summer she met Mel and they carried on a young person’s romance, working/ dancing / partying, until they fell in love and got married in 1957.

They lived fi rst with Mel’s parents, Vi and Barney, and as soon as possible they purchased a new house with Vi’s wedding present of a down payment. Over time, while working and living and growing they managed to have 4 piglets: Dee, Del, Jane & Drew.

Through the years of raising their family, of laughter & tears, joys & struggles, Carole was an anchor, she worked at various jobs, she was a wife, mother, grandmother and friend, & don’t forget domestic engineer.

Carole & Mel nurtured many friendships and relationships that have endured through time as we see today. Carole kept her fi nger on the pulse of the community & country. She was very passionate in her views of her family, her community, and politics at all levels, and didn’t shy away from the top two subjects to be avoided: politics and religion. Though Carole could be unyielding during a debate, she always hoped and prayed the best for everyone.

She lived what she preached, stoic through years of many physical frailties. Though she leaves an emptiness in our lives, we are comforted in the knowledge that she is no longer suffering and is in a better place.

Carole passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015 inDawson Creek, at the age of 78 years.

A prayer service was held on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Dawson Creek, B.C.

A funeral mass was held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Fr. Louis Kwena offi ciated. Interment will be at a later date.

Carole was predeceased by her son; Drew.Carole is survived by her loving husband; Mel, sons;

Dee (Sandra), Del (Jamie), daughter; Jane and grandchildren; Taylor, Aby, and Kacy.

For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Carole to the South Peace Hospice Palliative Care Society #3, 929-106 Avenue, Dawson Creek, B.C. V1G 2N8.
