PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND HISTORY

The beginnings of the Migration & Me Program (formerly Migration, Monarchs, Birds, and Me) came about as the result of the realized concern that there were not enough people of color, mainly brown and black people, who were visibly engaged in available extracurricular outdoor activities, stewardship, and Earth care. The idea and name, Migration, Monarchs, Birds, and Me, came from the heart and mind of the program’s creator, Veronica Kyle.

Our journeys through life are varied. The struggles, hardships, and joys we have faced shape each of us in distinct ways. Migrating to a new place is one of the major journeys made in life. Everyone has a story of migration, whether it is one’s own migration story or one that has been inherited from loved ones.

Stories of migration are all around us; all living creatures migrate. Migration occurs for different reasons, from different places, and in different ways. During migration, some things accompany the migrating creature, and some things are left behind. Upon arrival at the destination, a different world awaits, but familiar connections to the place of origin through cultural, spiritual, and family traditions are maintained. These connections are directly tied to experiences in and use of the provisions of nature, specifically, land, water, and air.

The decision to include the migration of monarchs and birds was intentional. The migratory journey of the monarch butterfly in particular begins in Mexico and culminates in Canada. Monarch butterflies, like human beings, look for welcoming places to rest and eat during their journey. Migratory birds do the same. The Migration & Me program closely examines this process and equips communities to take action to protect future migration. Those faith communities who choose to become a partner in this program will have the opportunity to learn about and be in nature. Participants will endeavor to understand and embrace an attitude of good stewardship towards the natural environment that sustains all life.

The main components of the Migration & Me program include story circles, nature outings, and service opportunities, which draw each participant into the lives and experiences of all living things and the places they inhabit. Story circles provide the opportunity to hear personal migration stories and see the connections between that experience and the environment. It is an event that brings together people of all ages with a rich variety of experiences while providing the story teller the opportunity to recall, reflect, laugh, and sometimes cry while celebrating that “I made it!”

PROGRAM SUMMARY AND GOALS

The Migration & Me program is a conservation and stewardship program focused on engaging faith communities in the art of story circles. Participants learn about the deep connection between personal migration stories and the importance of habitat restoration and conservation of the natural environment. Migration & Me is a program intended for all ages. Youth and young adults find the program particularly intriguing. Story circles, nature outings, and service opportunities help connect participants with nature, while emphasizing the connection between the migration of people, monarchs, and birds. The Migration & Me activities draw each participant into the lives and experiences of others and connect the stories with the common needs of all living things and the environment. The Migration & Me program emphasizes and encourages active participation in the maintenance of the plants and habitats that sustain the process of migration.

The overall goal of the Migration & Me program is to raise awareness of habits and practices that negatively impact and compromise our natural resources and impede or eliminate the migration of the monarch butterfly and migratory birds. Those partnering in the process of Earth care through this program will learn, connect, and conserve while having fun. Participants will experience a variety of activities, including: story circles, monarch and bird introductions/presentations, nature outings, eco-friendly art projects, and planting butterfly gardens/way stations and food and/or flower gardens.

It is expected that some of the youth that are involved will become “Eco-Ambassadors.” Being an Eco- Ambassador encourages and provides a rich opportunity for the personal growth and leadership of young people in their house of worship and the community. During the summer months they may also be considered for employment through the summer programs available at Faith in Place and throughcommunity and environmental partners.

STORY CIRCLE LEADERSHIP GUIDE

OVERVIEWThe purpose of this document is to help you facilitate a story circle for your own faith community. Faith in Place will be a resource for you and your community, assisting in the coordination of the event, bringing expert speakers, highlighting themes, and sharing how to tie environmental objectives to the stories.

Included is information about the following:- Story Circle Introduction- What’s needed for a story circle?- Leadership Guide

INTRODUCTIONEveryone has a story of migration - movement from one place to another - whether it is their own or one inherited from loved ones. A story circle is a space where people are invited to share their stories and reflect on journeys throughout the world. Migration stories are varied, and every generation has something to learn and offer. In journeying from one place to another, people and things were brought along, while certain people, places, and things were left behind. Along the way people in migration experienced varied hardships and yet managed to survive. When the group migrating reached their destination, they became accustomed to their new environment, new roles in the community, and integrated their past way of living into daily life.

WHAT’S NEEDED FOR A STORY CIRCLE? The most important items for a story circle are items that can enhance the telling of the story by engaging the audience’s 5 senses (sight, smell, taste, touch, and sound): a captive audience; comfortable chairs; photos;, family keepsakes like quilts, old farm or kitchen utensils, and house goods; music; or pictures. Bringing food that brings back memories of the place of origin, or traditions of the family, new and old,

Page 10: THE MIGRATION & ME PROGRAM - Faith in Place · of the monarch butterfly in particular begins in Mexico and culminates in Canada. Monarch butterflies, like human beings, look for welcoming

10

is a good way to connect the story to something everyone can share. A table can be set up to display special sacred items that will assist the storyteller. Having a symbol or something to indicate each time the story circle is in session will help focus the energy of the room towards the story teller.

LEADERSHIP GUIDEThis is a suggested guide on how you could conduct your story circle. It is important is that you as the leader feel natural and relaxed, and that others feel free to express and share their voices. Story circles will be different each time. Each story circle ultimately finds its own path.

PREPARATION• Before starting your event, choose a theme or two for the story circle. This will help both the audience

and the storyteller find a common ground from which to start the conversation. (The Story Circle Curriculum has some great ideas for themes.)

• As much as is possible, physically create an atmosphere that allows for all present to see and hear. A semi-circle of chairs works best.

• Choose a couple of questions or ideas that relate to the environment. These questions can address mending old clothes, reusing furniture, fixing damaged goods, growing your own herbs or having a small garden, washing by hand, making clothing, canning vegetables, etc.

• Highlighting traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation, is an important way to show how we stay connected to nature, even while living in the urban landscape.

LET THE STORY CIRCLE BEGIN• Greet the participants and audience individually as they arrive, if possible. Once everyone has

gathered and is seated, welcome the group to the story circle. This can be done by the leader and/or by members of your Green Team.

• Next, ask the audience what they think a story circle is. Give your explanation, let them know the general schedule for the story circle, and share the rules of each story circle. These rules are designed to ensure an environment of order and respect for those participating in the story circle.

1. No moving around once the story teller begins.2. No interruptions. There will be a question and answer period after the presenter has finished

telling their story.3. Turn off all cell phones, make sure they are completely silent – not just on vibrate.

Note: Be mindful that small children might be restless during this time, so have a place for them to play and move about in a separate space from the story circle. If it is a coffee hour make sure that the serving is done ahead of time so people don’t get up and move around.

Page 11: THE MIGRATION & ME PROGRAM - Faith in Place · of the monarch butterfly in particular begins in Mexico and culminates in Canada. Monarch butterflies, like human beings, look for welcoming

17

• Restate the theme for the story circle. Encourage those present to think about the theme in terms of human and animal migration.

• Ask the participants to go around the room and share: - their first and last name, - two of their parental or ancestral family last names (if they know them), - a place from which they migrated, and the year they migrated if possible,

• Share a little bit of your family’s story, or some history of migration or moving from one side of town to another. It is often easiest for others to share if they hear a story to get them thinking.

• Ask the audience about some of the foods they remember from their place of origin or food traditions they have carried with them. What food brings back the memory of home?

• If you have a story teller:- Introduce the story teller. Consider sharing a bit about their connection to the faith community or group gathered, and any personal connections you might have with them. If possible, highlight the ways they have been involved with environmental activities in the community.

• If you do not have a story teller: - If you do not have a story teller, ask for volunteers from the group to share their story more in depth.

• Once you have concluded the story sharing portion, ask the audience about some of the recurring themes (food, water, etc.) that they found in the story or stories shared. Refer participants to the handouts to help guide questions.

• Ask the audience how these themes could be interpreted through an environmental lens.

• Thank everyone for coming, and encourage them to: - Sign up to share their stories at the next story circle, and/or - Tell someone else about the story circle experience and encourage them to sign up.

MIGRATION & ME STORY CIRCLE PARTICIPANT HANDOUT

12

MIGRATION & ME STORY CIRCLE PARTICIPANT HANDOUT

Our journeys through life are varied. The struggles, hardships, and joys we have faced shape each of us in distinct ways. Migrating to a new place is one of the major journeys many of us make in our lifetime.

Stories of migration are all around us. We migrate for different reasons, from different places, and in different ways. We bring some things with us, while others are left behind. Upon arrival, we find a different world awaiting us and maintain a connection to our place of origin through cultural traditions, spirituality, food, and stories. These experiences of migration enrich our community, and allow us to learn from listening to the journeys of others through the world.

GUIDING QUESTIONS, GUIDELINES, ISSUES AND THEMES• Who are the story tellers? Where did they migrate from? How old were they when they migrated?• How many people did they migrate with?• Were there family and friends waiting to meet them at their final destinations?• Were they the first generation to migrate? Who migrated next?• Have they gone back to their place of origin to visit? If so, for what occasions?

Migration stories often share similar themes. Below are seven themes and related questions to inspire and assist in the story telling process. FOOD - What did you eat before you migrated? - What did you eat during your journey? - When you arrived at your new homestead were you able to find familiar foods? - Who offered you food along the way? Who offered you your first meal when you arrived? - Who is the keeper of your family’s recipes? What are your favorite dishes from your place of origin?

NATURE - What scenes of nature do you remember from your old home? - What animals were you used to seeing there? - What did you see, hear, or experience that was strange to you when you arrived here?

WATER - What access to water did you have for cooking, bathing, and cleaning before you migrated? - How accessible was water while you traveled?

SHELTER - Who offered you shelter when you arrived? - How was that shelter the same or different from your old home?

Page 13: THE MIGRATION & ME PROGRAM - Faith in Place · of the monarch butterfly in particular begins in Mexico and culminates in Canada. Monarch butterflies, like human beings, look for welcoming

13

CONSERVATION- How did you and your family conserve resources For example, did you can food, use the land make clothing, recycle/remake/reuse, make quilts, use electricity and other energy sources, or make toys, etc.?

- Who demonstrated how to “make a way out of no way”? - How did you travel to your destination? - Who conserves your family history and traditions?

SPIRITUAL LIFE - How did you practice your faith before migrating?- How did your faith interact with the environment (nature): harvest celebrations, holidays, may poles, solstice, picnics, etc.?- A central element of all faiths is care for the Earth. How does your present faith walk connect with the environment?

ADVOCACY - What were the reasons that you chose to migrate from your original homestead? - How did you advocate for yourself and your family along the way? - What role did human and civil rights play in your migration story? - Who advocated for your freedom to be able to migrate? - What risk or challenges did you and/or your family encounter along the way? - What freedoms did you lose or gain from migration?

Page 14: THE MIGRATION & ME PROGRAM - Faith in Place · of the monarch butterfly in particular begins in Mexico and culminates in Canada. Monarch butterflies, like human beings, look for welcoming

VISUAL RECORDING SHEET

Please use this diagram to record important and meaningful parts of the storyteller’s journey. These seven themes are important parts of any migration story. By listening closely and recording what you hear, you can help record these stories for future generations.

LYON’S MIGRATION POEM

Where I’m From

I am from clothespins, from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride

I am from the dirt under the black porch.(Black, glistening

it tasted like beets.)I am from the forsythia bush

the Dutch elmwhose long gone limbs I remember

as if they were my own.

I’m from fudge and eyeglasses, from Imogene and Alafair.I’m from the know-it-alls

and the pass-it-ons,from perk up and pipe down.

I’m from He restoreth my soulwith a cottonball lamb

and ten verses I can say myself.

I’m from Artemus and Billie’s Branchfried corn and strong coffee.

From the finger my grandfather lost to the auger

the eye my father shut to keep his sight.

Under my bed was a dress boxspilling old pictures, a sift of lost faces

to drift beneath my dreams.I am from those moments-snapped before I budded-

leaf-fall from the family tree.

“Where I’m From” appears in Where I’m From, Where Poems Come From, a poetry work- shop-book for teachers and students, written by George Ella Lyon, illustrated with photographs by Robert Hoskins, and published by Absey & Co, Spring, Texas, 1999. It can also be found on Lyon’s website, http://www.georgeellalyon.com/where.html, along with examples of how people around the world have used it as a writing exercise to prompt thinking about roots and traditions.

CONNECT partner, Covenant United Church of Christ

I’m from the dirt road of Lexington, Mississippi.Water rushing down the pond, birds singing in the window

Shotgun house with no phone to ringSeating on the porch rocking in the chair.

I’m from the cotton fields, sweat running down my faceto a kitchen of greens, cornbread and peach cobbler.

Garden of flower freshly blooming in the summer.Smells of hogs, chickens, dogs, horses, cows

waiting to be milked, fed each morning.

I’m from “see you tomorrow if the Lord say the same”“don’t count all your chickens before they hatch”

“Fairly-Miley” If you know what i mean.Hanging clothes on the line, fishing pole hooking the worms.

I’m from going to town on Saturday and church on Sundayreading the Bible and memorizing poems for Easter and Children Day’s

I’m from a grandmamma who was a tough no-nonsense womanbring you in this world and will take you out.

Waiting for the Commodity Truck at the end of the roadCandy, cheese, cookies and bologna.

Lamps become my light for nightChop wood to keep me warm for winter.

I’m from the rib, living a thousand years is like yesterday.A fragrance from flowers, trees that bud in the spring,

The hills of Mt. Olive, Randall Town Road.I’m a breath of life, Heaven is my home.
