There are two phases to the implementation of the hydrogen delivery system:

•R&D Phase where a single system is developed and tested on a test cryostat which represents an absorber.

•Implementation phase where the delivery system is matched to a real MICE absorber

The objective of the R&D phase is to demonstrate a safe hydrogen delivery system for the absorber.

This will consist of a first model MICE hydrogen delivery system together with a test cryostat that does not have thin windows but does contain the same instrumentation.

Objectives of R&D

Process and instrumentation

Identified supplierd for most of the components for the system e.g. relief valves, level indicators etc…

• Tyco (AG Series 90) Relief Valves– Pilot valves – quick acting– 3% tolerance on set

pressure– Closes at 95% of set

pressure– Response time is <0.5s

• BS&B Low Pressure Reverse Buckling Disc– ±5% tolerance on burst

pressure– Vacuum/back pressure

resistant• Hand Valves can be locked off

as necessary

Also specified temperature sensors, pumps, pressure and vacuum gauges

Hydride Bed

Original supplier is unable to provide anything We have found an alternative supplier in Austria – good specification and cheaper

• Supplier: TREIBACHER INDUSTRIE AG

– The nominal figures for the absorption temperature is -10°C and +20°C for the evolution temperature.

• Heat Transfer Medium - Water / glycolMH

• Weight: 120 kg

• Tank Structure A hull with 7 inter-connected stainless-steel storage cylinders , each with internal coil for cooling/heating .

• Dimensions Ø370 mm × L1500 mm (not including attachments), horizontal position

• Tank Total Weight 260-280 kg

• Operating Conditions:

– Charging Gas Component Hydrogen of 99.99% purity

– Charging Gas Pressure 1.2-1.7 bar abs

– Hydrogen Charging Rate Max 70 NL/min

– Discharging Gas Pressure 1.0-7.0 bar abs

Control System

• The control system will be implemented in Labview for the R&D tests.

• Once the algorithms have been developed they will be incorporated into EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System), which is the control system that has been chosen for the MICE experiment.

Fortunately Labview possesses “Channel Access” capability, used by all EPICS clients, which will ease the subsequent transition to EPICS.

EPICS can be installed under a wide range of operating systems on a wide range of hardware platforms (eg Unix, Linux, Windows, vxWorks). The IOCs (Input Output Controllers), are traditionally built from VME cards and the 68xxx microprocessor family, running vxWorks, but other hardware platforms and operating systems are now supported. No decision has yet been taken on the hardware platforms and operating systems to be employed by MICE for EPICS.

• The control system naturally has two interfaces:– Hydrogen Absorber Cryostat system– Hydrogen Delivery system

Page 11: The MICE Hydrogen System Summary Tom Bradshaw, Yury Ivanyushenkov, Elwyn Baynham, Tony Jones, Mike Courthold and Matthew Hills Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Control System

• Hydrogen Delivery system– Normal control of the Hydrogen Delivery system can be sub-

divided as follows:• Purging the delivery system with Helium;• Filling the Hydrogen Absorber with liquid Hydrogen from the

Hydride Bed;• Maintaining the Hydrogen System in its normal running state;• Emptying the Hydrogen Absorber and returning the

Hydrogen back to the Hydride Bed.– Additionally it will be necessary to charge the Hydride Bed with

Hydrogen at the outset, and following any maintenance on the Hydride Bed.

– We are also developing the system to work with Helium

HAZOP and FMECA

•HAZOP – HAZard and Operability assessmentThis is a formalised safety assessment that is based on nodes in the Process and Instrumentation Diagram

•FMECA – Failure Modes Effect and Criticality Analysis

This does what it says•Need to develop operational safety system

•Yury continues to develop these

Page 17: The MICE Hydrogen System Summary Tom Bradshaw, Yury Ivanyushenkov, Elwyn Baynham, Tony Jones, Mike Courthold and Matthew Hills Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
