his microfiche edition of The Mexican-American War: Unit Histories and Personal Narratives is full of fascinating, firsthand accounts of a violent, controversial conflict that
occurred early on in America’s history. Texas and California—states that today are largely synonymous with American culture—were at one point in the early 1800s part of Mexico. After the famous battle of the Alamo, Texas gained independence from Mexico. Most Texans favored becoming part of the United States, something that Mexico did not want. President Polk sent General Zachary Taylor down to Texas to defend the Rio Grande border. But after the Thornton Affair, in which nearly a dozen Americans were killed by the Mexican army, the United States declared war on Mexico. The resulting Mexican-American War not only gained Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California for the United States, but it was also a proving ground for many of the leaders of the Civil War, including Ulysses S. Grant, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee. Indeed, the Mexican-American War was in many ways a foreshadowing of the coming Civil War—with the North fearing that, with the annexation of Texas as a slave state, the South would gain ascendancy in government. Researchers will find that the Mexican-American War, a controversy that aroused the passions of many Americans, presents an interesting case study of a time when U.S. citizens divided along political party lines in their opposition or support of a war.
