Dear all...Excitement, anticipation, hope. Something new is about to happen and it has the potential to be great. That’s how I feel this week before I start as your new Vicar. There is also some trepidation and fear, it will be hard work and have its difficulties. Facing any big change is like this, a new school, a new job, a new family, a new stage in life. It’s scary - but we go ahead and do it anyway. Hope is stronger than fear.

As I’m writing this I have only met a small number of you; very soon it will be hundreds. The first challenge for anyone new in any community is to start to get to know people and to learn people’s names, and I am sure that the communities of Bolton-le-Sands and Nether Kellet will make it easy for all newcomers to get to know people, and will always be open places of welcome. For me, I fear I may struggle, but I have hope that if people repeatedly remind me who they are and repeat their names, eventually I may begin to remember. Hope and fear at the task ahead, but hope is stronger than fear.

Two people I have already got to know are Karen and Kathy, our churchwardens. I have got to know what a huge extra responsibility that have carried during the last few months and how dedicated, committed and hard-working they are. If you see Karen or Kathy, say thank you, and if you see me, say hello.

God bless.

Readings for October

Page 6: The Messenger - October 2012

Many thanks to all those readers who provided such positive feedback about the new look Messenger. There were some very constructive comments, and clearly many people enjoyed the September edition. Our aim is to serve the whole of our community within the Parish, and we welcome news from any community groups and from individuals. We are always mindful of costs, and have managed to keep the cost to 60p for the remainder of this year, but we do expect that there will be a slight increase in the cover price for 2013.

We can keep the cost of The Messenger as low as possible by:

Increasing the circulation – do you know any-one who would like to join the list of regular subscribers ? If so, please contact Kathy Edwards - 824518

Increasing income from advertising – are you involved in a local business which would be interested in placing an advert in The Mes-senger? If so, please contact David Bateman – [email protected]

Your views and suggestions about the devel-opment of The Messenger are always wel-come – please contact David Bateman, any member of The Communications Committee, or email [email protected]

If you would like to contribute an article to The Messenger, you can email it directly to [email protected] by hand/post to David Bateman, 30 Slyne Road, Bolton-le-Sands.

The new look MessengerThe deadline for receiving articles is 20th of the month.

The Messenger is published 10 times a year; monthly with double editions for July/August and December/January.

We are keen to publicise any events taking place within the parish, and to celebrate the many successes of all who live and work here.

Local Clubs and SocietiesIf you have any events planned, please contact Karen Hillis - 824001 who will put it in the Parish Diary - this will help to avoid clashes, and may mean more support for your event.

Our branch was so pleased to welcome five new members at the Opening Service on 19th September. Held in church, the service was led by the Revd Alan Crossley, who based his address on the MU theme for 2012, “Your Gift? Discover & Celebrate!”

Remembering the celebratory summer we have had in Britain this year, Alan likened the members of the church to Olympic athletes – some going for the short, sharp event like the 100 metres, and yet others attempting the Marathon, being in for the long haul. Some church members would be striving for what lay ahead in the future, like a javelin thrower reaching for distance with his throw, and maybe others emulate the long jumpers, jumping in with both feet in, saying what needs to be said. Some might be bearing heavy loads, like the shot putters, or getting themselves in a spin like a discus thrower. Relay runners might be an example to everyone, knowing just when was the right time to pass on the baton, having played their part in a team event.

All, Alan said, were given particular gifts enabling them to be part of Team Bolton-le-Sands, and all gifts were necessary, equally valued in equipping the church. Alan gave us much food for thought as we were reminded again of the scripture verses from Hebrews, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12: 1-2)

Our new members are Rosemary Falcous, Angela Hodder, Sheila Rigby, Margaret Uttley & Beryl Wilkinson and we very much hope they will enjoy being amongst us, part of Team MU!

Our next meeting in October is the first Coffee Morning of the season, when we hope to raise more funds for our projects. It takes place in the Old Boys’ Grammar School from 10-12noon on Wednesday 3rd October and we hope that many will support us following the Communion service in church. On Wednesday 17th October at 2pm Betty Scott will be the speaker for our meeting in the Community Centre – her talk is called, “How I became a Millionaire” – perhaps it won’t be quite as it first sounds!

I would ask you to continue to pray for our members and their loved ones who are unwell just now and thank you for your thoughtful concern and support for each other.

Looking forward to seeing you in the Autumn and with warmest wishes,

Pam Bentley, Enrolling Member

Our AGM was held in September, and the Staff, Committee Members, Trustees and all other supporters were thanked for their continued hard work, help and support over the last year.

A review of fundraising showed another great increase in amount raised this year compared to last. WELL DONE TO ALL!! Through our tireless efforts of fundraising we have managed to replace the kitchen and the external cladding to the building this year - an amazing achievement.

Highlights of 2011-2012

We were reminded of what a successful year we have had, and some of the best moments:• The OFSTED Report was excellent.• ‘Step Into Quality Award’ was achieved. • DJ gained EYFS Professional Status.• Our 40th Birthday Party – what a suc-

cess!• Resolution of waste disposal issue.• WI Charity 2012. The WI made us their

charity and raised in excess of £1,000 for us. Money is still coming in. Thank you!

• Significant increase in numbers attend-ing Toddler Group.

• Replacement of external cladding.

We are still trying to get a recycling facility for the village. The Parish Council has previ-ously been approached. We hope 2012-2013 will be as successful as last year - there is still plenty to be done.

Dear friends...Our Agapé lunch which takes place on the first Thursday of the month is proving to be quite a success. As we go into our 2nd year we find that new friendships have been formed as people have come together to relax over a meal. Many people have asked me what the word Agapé means. Agapé is a Greek word used in New Testament times meaning a sacred meal shared by the early church. It is also one of several different New Testament Greek words all of which mean love in its various forms, Agapé generally being used to signify Christian love.

During September we were giving some thought during worship to the letter of James, a letter believed to have been written by Jesus’ brother, James, to those early Christians who were living outside Palestine, en-couraging them in their lives together. It is a short letter – 5 chapters - and not difficult to read. It begins by reminding us how every good and perfect gift comes to us from God, it reminds us how we don’t have to earn God’s love – it is simply there for us without condition and the letter then continues with lots of practical advice on how to live as a Christian.

There are warnings against showing favouritism, speaking ill of other people, judging each other, boasting and oppression of the poor. The main emphasis of James letter however is on ‘doing’ the word of God. Not just telling people about God’s love but showing it in action.

Through our Shining Stars group and the Agapé lunch I believe we are putting our Christian love into action. Je-sus said that he came to serve, not to be served. As his followers looking to him for our example I hope that is how we see ourselves – serving the community of Bolton le Sands, not expecting the community to serve us.

With my very best wishes

Yolande

Treasure HuntOn Saturday 8th September the Churches of Bolton le Sands held a family treasure hunt. The sun shone (how many Saturdays has that happened this year?!) and we had a lovely afternoon. There were three routes round the village each taking about half an hour to complete so plenty of time to follow one or more of them.

We thank Joshua Hillis for his hard work in compiling the questions and encouraging those who took part to learn some surprising things about Bolton le Sands. On returning to the United Reformed Church a huge tin of chocolates was waiting for people to share as they checked their answers. Tea and delicious cake was provided as people chatted and enjoyed a lazy afternoon together. There were no winners or losers but everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and went away feeling they had discovered a little bit more about our lovely village.

Shining StarsIts hard to believe we are now entering our 4th year of SHINING STARS. Many of the children who came to us as babies are now beginning their first year of schooling and it has been wonderful to see them growing and developing. It has also been great to form relationships with parents, grandparents, aunt-ies, uncles and carers.

9am – 11am on Friday mornings sees the church hall transformed into a glorious play room as the children move from activity to activity with all the enthusiasm that only young children can generate. As we watch the children playing together we can see that we have budding artists, mechanics, singers, vets, doctors, nurses and farmers amongst them.

I am extremely grateful for the support of church members and friends who come along each week to support the group by providing refreshments, music, a listening ear or simply getting down on the floor and playing with the children. Along the way we have managed to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Children in Need, Make a Wish Appeal and church funds.

We are always glad of new helpers – please speak to me if you are interested and if you know of any families with children under school age do tell them about us and encourage them to come along on Friday mornings.

Notes from St Marks...A friend called this morning and as usual we had a laugh and a chat over a cup of tea.

Later in the day, I sat down to write the notes for the October Messenger and remembered a little story I had read earlier in the week all about laughter. It was a fascinating story about traditional English customs, one of which was an annual service for clowns held in London. It certainly captures the imagination. Sometimes as many as 50 clowns, amateur and professional, attend in full costume and make-up. They sing hymns and read the lessons. At the end of the service one year came the following prayer shared by them all.

Dear Lord, I thank you for calling me to share with others your most precious gift of laughter. May I never forget that it is Your Gift and my privilege.

They are right about how important laughter is in our lives. Whether we share it with clowns in baggy trousers or comedians in smart suits or simply with our own friends – it is precious.

I couldn’t agree MORE.

Professor Noreen MurrayIn the July 2011 edition of The Messenger, Betty Cottam provided an interesting obituary for Lady Noreen Murray, who died in May 2011. Betty has provided this update, which is quite timely, because of the recent moves at national level towards recognising the work of more of our women scientists.

Lady Noreen Murray, nee Parker, was the daughter of our village headmaster, who came to Bolton-le-Sands in 1940 from Read, near Burnley. Noreen died last year from motor neurone disease, aged seventy four. She was Professor of Genetics at Edinburgh University. Along with her husband they perfected a vaccine for hepatitis B in humans. In her will she has left £2 million to the Royal Society in London, of which she was the first lady member, for research into motor neurone disease. Noreen also bequeathed a hundred thousand pounds each to Lancaster Girls’ Grammar school, Lancaster University and Warwick University, where she did her PhD. £250,000 was left to the Scottish Woodland Trust. To her old college, King’s in London, she has also bequeathed £250,000.

The residue of her estate of almost £9 million is left to her husband. They had no issue. Her dedication to her work deserves a blue plaque on their Broadlands house. She was still going to the University, unable to speak but conversing by the written word, until going into a home for her last few months. Her brother in Tasmania, who had an equally illustrious career in forestry, died in May this year, with Parkinson’s disease, aged 81. Neither child ever returned to Broadlands after University.

From the Children of BLS School...We are looking forward to sharing in the Harvest Service on 14th October, and to coming to church on Monday October 15th at 9.30am for our whole school Harvest worship.

Please come and join us that morning if you can.

In RE this half term, in Years 5 and 6, we are thinking about the meaning of Harvest and looking at how and why it is celebrated. We are also going to ask what it means in different situations in the world, and reflect on some big questions! In Key Stage 1 we are thinking about Harvest round the world. We would love to share your special memories of Harvest times in the past. If you can help us, please pass your memories in writing to Joan Midgley, or let her know if you would be happy to talk to us at school in person on Thursday 18th or Friday 19th October in the afternoon.

You can contact Joan via school, or on 732347.

Thank you for your help. We look forward to seeing you

Tasty treats & family favourites wanted for our new recipe bookDo you have a recipe that’s been handed down through your family or a dish that’s always popular at parties? If so, why not include it in a new book of recipes that’s being produced to raise money for church funds?

This new recipe book is being produced by the PCC Social Group and will feature some of your favourite recipes from around the parish. The idea is to include different recipes that can be made throughout the year.

The recipe book will be on sale for the first time at our Christmas Fair on Saturday 1 December, with all proceeds going to church funds.

If you’re happy to have your recipe published, type it out and email it to [email protected]. Alternatively write it out and drop it into the specially marked box at the back of Holy Trinity.

Recipes need to be in by 1 November - to give the team enough time to select the recipes that will be included and to print it.

After School Coffee and Cakes held at the Community Centre on Friday 14th September raised £89.36 for Church funds.

To welcome the younger members of the community into the fellowship of Holy Trinity Church we held an After School Coffee and Cakes in the Community Centre. This was the first of many where we had various activities for the children including biscuit decorating, nail painting and plenty of yummy cakes to buy.

Many thanks to everybody who helped and supported the afternoon.
