From the Rector: God Be With You, Father Joseph

The book of Ecclesiastes in the Hebrew Scriptures tells us that "for everything there is a season." We are entering a new season in our relationship with the Reverend Joseph Wallace-

Williams, who has served our parish and school with such passion and thoughtfulness for over two years. Joseph has accepted the invitation to join the Order of the Holy Cross in the Hudson Valley in New York, the Episcopal Church's oldest religious order for men. Yes, Father Joseph is becoming a monk! Technically, he is becoming a postulant, but this process leads to becoming a monk. His last Sunday at Grace-St. Luke's will be August 17, which is, fittingly, Episcopal School Sunday. In two years, Father Joseph has made a remarkable impact on our parish and school. He has loved us, laughed with us, cried with us, inspired so many of us, frustrated a few of us, and prayed boldly that all of us would trust in our heart of hearts that we are loved infinitely by God in Christ. His passion for the Gospel and genuine hospitality have inspired so many to join our community. At GSL School, Joseph's faith, intelligence, energy, and humor have had a profound impact on our our students and

faculty. In terms of our 20s and 30s in the parish, Joseph has not only grown this group numerically, but rooted this community in the ground of the Church's teachings and spiritual resources. When I called Joseph to GSL, I hoped that he would help me expand our work with young adults. After two years, I can say he far exceeded what I imagined possible. As I look ahead to the next few years at GSL, we will build upon Joseph's foundation with our young adult community. And what about his laughter and his bright socks and facial expressions? God literally broke the mold when he created Joseph. As summer progresses, the parish will hear more from Joseph and from me about this transition. For now, I encourage prayers of thanksgiving for our priest and friend as he prepares to go to the monastery. Joseph will be fully engaged in parish work throughout July and August until his last Sunday so that there is time to see him and learn more about his call to the order. Although this is a new season in our relationship with Joseph, we do not say "goodbye." For God will always keep us connected in the Spirit.

Episcopal Laymen's Conference

Join Episcopal men from all across Tennessee for the 68th Conference of the Episcopal Churchmen of Tennessee which will be held Aug. 15-17. The theme is “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 2

Speakers for the conference will be Justin Crisp, a PhD student in Theology from Yale and a Research Assistant at the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, the Rev. Dan Matthews, Jr., Rector of St. Luke’s Atlanta, and the Rev. Bob Leopold, founder of Southside Abbey, a new model of worshipping community in one of Chattanooga’s oldest neighborhoods..

Vacation Bible School 2014Holy Men, Holy Women

by Harriet RobertsEach year, as we ready ourselves for Vacation Bible School, I wonder what it will be that will define the year’s week-long adventure.

First of all, this year was awesome. We had 107 children, tweens, and teens and over 40 adult volunteers in our church for the entire week studying the likes of Benjamin Franklin, St. Lucy, Bishop Oscar Romero, The Blessed Mother, and Eric Liddell. The children played, heard stories, sang, made crafts, and worshiped.

But—this year—it was our teen volunteers who just blew me away!

Our teen volunteers (rising 9th graders and up) were fantastic. The week before Vacation Bible School, not only was I getting calls asking if there were still spots for the younger set (which is usual), but also if there were slots for teens to volunteer (which is unusual). In a short time, we went from 6 teenage volunteers to almost 30. And, they did a remarkable job for us. Truly, we could not have had this amazing program without their energy, their enthusiasm, and their commitment.

So, this year, I am struck by the gift our teenagers give to us during Vacation Bible School. When you see them, be sure to tell them how awesome they are!

GRACEBUILDERSA Parish-wide Outreach Project

4453 Walden Glen Cove

HELP MAKE A DREAM A REALITY!

The Outreach Committee and vestry are excited to announce a major community project in partnership with United Housing, Inc. (www.uhinc.org). Using a $25,000 allocation from the vestry and matching funds from United Housing, Inc, GSL will rehab a house in Northwood Hills.

One of Outreach’s missions is to shelter the needy and we are actively involved in addressing homelessness and the poor of our community. This project will allow us all to better live into our mission and the mandate of the Gospel.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? There are a variety of volunteer opportunities and times. GSL volunteers will work shifts on Fridays and Saturdays from 9–3 on July 11–12, July 25–26, August 8–9, August 22–23, September 12–13, and lastly in October for a House Blessing and Shower. Contractors will perform most of the work to meet code requirements, while our volunteers WILL HAVE FUN with demolition, painting, deck and fence construction, landscaping and cleaning. Hospitality teams are also needed for food, snacks and water supplies.

VOLUNTEER SIGN UP will be in Trezevant Hall following Sunday services. Look for additional info as to how to sign up in Sunday bulletins, the church info screens, the GSL eNews, website and Facebook page! Contact Edith Heller at [email protected] if you want a leadership role in GRACEBUILDERS.

Food Pantry Facts by Juan Fuentes

In May, GSL Food Pantry volunteers spent 22 hours distributing food and in Food Bank pick-ups, not including the hours spent by volunteer packers.

We served 53 households, which included 71 adults, 46 children, and 16 seniors!!

We also provided fresh produce such as eggs, spinach and other greens via our contract with Bring It Food Hub.

WANT TO HELP? To volunteer, call Happy Jones at 276-2136 or email [email protected].

"What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead." --- James 2:14-17

REMINDER—The last Sunday of the month (July 27) is Food Pantry Sunday! Donation baskets will be available at the rear entrance of the church and east vestibule entrance by the sacristy. Let’s fill those baskets!

Wondrous. Hour 25 is a mess of catfish and chicken fried with all the fixins on the side…and Hour 26 is crackling logs on fire and melting smores on sticks. Hour 27 is raising a ruckus and voices to heaven…and Hour 28 might just be dancing and stay-ing up late.

Pastoral CareCorner

The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude

Friedrich Nietzsche

GSL’s Pastoral Care ministry is often blessed to receive kind and thoughtful thank you notes by those whose hearts are grateful for touches they received.

But, one recent gift is so amazing that we just have to share with you all. The photo accompanying this article is but one of 90 cards lovingly handmade by Mary Elizabeth Partin for Pastoral Care in appreciation of our ministry to her late father, George Partin.

Hours and hours of detailed attention and lots and lots of love went into the making of these cards. We, in Pastoral care, will smile in memory of Mr. Partin with each card we inscribe and say a prayer of thanksgiving to Mary Elizabeth for her incredibly generous spirit.

neWs oF byGone days50 years ago (1964): You have noticed during Trinity Season the color of the various hangings in the church are green. Trinity Season makes up roughly half the Church year. There are special days scattered throughout the season. You will see white or red or even violet hangings on these special days. But green is by far the predominant color. Green means growth. Look around you. When trees are green they are growing. The grass and most other vegetation show green in their growing season. Why does our Church use green for Trinity Season? It does so because it wants to emphasize the need for the Church to grow. But why does the Church devote so much time to this green Trinity Season? It does so because the greatest responsibility it has is to grow.

What does the growth of the Church mean? The growth of the Church is the measure of the number of people who are coming into the Chuurch. When the Church is growing people are coming into it. Why is it so important that people should come into the Church? People who come into the Church are being brought to God. The Church exists so that it might bring people to God Any other thing it does is secondary to this act. It is not a country club or a social gathering or a society for the prevention of sin. It has the primary obligation of showing each man his God. Then sin or society or fun find their proper places. When a man sees and knows his God, then nothing else matters. Then nothing else can have the power in his life God has. Therefore it is most important that you and I offer our Church to everyone we know. A half a year is really not enough time in which to reach all our friends and acquaintances.

25 years ago (1989): The Rev. Battle Alexander Beasley has accepted a call to be an assistant to the rector at Grace-St. Luke's with primary emphasis on work with the youth, young singles and marrieds, and to share other pastoral and liturgical duties with the clergy staff. Jeannie Kienzle, a Memphian, will be coming on board August 1 to work in the capacity of Assistant Director of Music. I'm excited and exhilarated that next year, as we celebrate the 50th year of Grace-St. Luke's life, this major addition of the new building will come to good use as we seek to serve God and lift one another's spirit. We shall have a ground breaking service at 11:30 A.M. on July 9, followed by a reception in Trezevant Hall.

Things are somewhat quieter on this side of campus, at least for now! Construction is underway but going smoothly over at Miss Lee’s Preschool, and we are busy getting organized for the coming school year. I am happy to share the following new faculty appointments with you. We are welcoming a highly qualified group of teachers to our staff this fall, and we will publish an article in our Anchor magazine with more information on these new appointees later this year.

We are sad to bid farewell to our teachers who are departing, but we are excited to be bringing in some great new individual to fill their shoes! I know you will join me in welcoming these individuals to our community this fall.

School NewsBy Thor Kvande

We made another new addition to campus this spring that I wanted to be sure you noticed: the Alumni Corner at the intersection of Linden and Lemaster. This fundraising initiative was launched earlier in the year by our development department as a way for alumni to commemorate their time here and recognize former faculty and classmates. We installed an initial set of recognition plaques (and added lighting and signage) to this new feature in early May to coincide with the Alumni Reunion that was held May 10. We will do a second installation of plaques over the summer, and install plaques annually after that addition. I encourage you to go see all the plaques that have been installed to date, and please contact Denise Taylor ([email protected]) if you are interested in honoring a special GSL alum in your family!

Thank you as always for your support of our program at GSL School!

Miss Lee’s students were part of a memorable event this spring when pre-kindergartner Ty was baptized during a special daytime chapel service at GSL. Ty’s family kindly let the preschoolers share in the ceremony and celebration! Many thanks to Mary Margaret, Father Joseph, and Father Richard for making this such a wonderful event for Ty and his preschool classmates.

At Honors Chapel, Interim Head of Lower School Linda Niell presented fourth grader William Halliday with the Lower School Bishop’s Award, which is presented annually to a particular student in recognition of his or her service to others and understanding of the call to love one’s neighbor as one’s self and to respect the dignity of every human being.

The new Alumni Corner at the Lemaster-Linden intersection was unveiled this spring and already features some 100 commemorative plaques honoring alumni.

Hour 36 is the sun on the water for the lakeside Eucharist and the smiles on faces for eggs, bacon and biscuits. Hour 38 is in the pool, in the woods or out on the lake for whatever you want because it’s not too late. Hour 40 we wave good-bye to all that’s here, and start looking forward to next year.
