Pastor’s Evaluation

Pastor Eric S. Anderson began his ministry at the Church of the Holy Cross on April 16, 2016. Our Church’s Policies for Pastor state that there should be an an-nual review by a com-mittee appointed by the Board of Trustees. The Church’s two past mod-erators, Sue Smith and Woody Kita, and cur-rent Moderator Gloria

Kobayashi were as-signed to conduct the evaluation.

Thank you to the se-lected members who already answered questions regarding the Pastor’s interac-tion and leadership for our Church. Sunday School children were also asked to evaluate Pastor Eric. However,

after further discus-sion, it was decided that ALL members who live on the Island will be sent an evalua-tion questionnaire, which is being rede-signed for easier response. The com-mittee hopes that this process will also be a way to tell us how our church is doing.

From my perspective, with Lent over and East-er Sunday past, the Church can go “back to normal.” It’s the occasion to resume the routine, continue the customary, and sustain the status quo.

Which is a very wrong perspective.

Easter, I keep reminding myself (as I sigh with re-lief that the “extras” of Lent are over), is the Great Shake-Up of the World. It overturns the routine. It defies custom. It overwhelms the status quo.

“You want ordinary life?” shouts Easter: “Don’t you wish you may have it! No ordinary life for you:

“You get new life!”

The great powers of the world, like Rome, or Washington, or Moscow? They can be disregarded, if not ignored. All the

power they can apply fades to nothing against Easter.

The dominant belief systems of the world, like “might makes right,” and “me and mine first,” and “good people finish last”? They fall as well before Easter, where sacrifice triumphs, and the givers come first, and goodness arises.

Poverty? Oppression? Death itself? Sorry: You get to pass away, too. Easter is here, and whatever power you held is gone.

I gave up hamburgers for Lent. For Easter, we will all have to give up what’s ordinary.

In Easter, God has given us greatness.

With aloha,

Pastor Eric

It is so satisfying to hear someone to say Church of the Holy Cross had “The best food in town” for blood donors. I’d say, “One of the Best.” It is important for us to have the donors so we can have a good supply of blood if and when it is needed. Donors deserve a good array of refresh-ments to have after they give their pint of precious blood. CHC members have been most generous of their talent and time to donate the food items and man and maintain the canteen area. We are most grate-ful for all who helped. Thank you to ladies who called people for a dona-tion: Bev Dodo Carol Morioka Eileen Shiraishi

Strategic Planning Feedback

Our members care about where our church and our Hawaii Conference UCC are going. Strategic planning consultant Cyn-thia Scherr visited with East Hawaii UCC church-es at CHC on March 6 as part of the neighbor is-land feedback tour called “Huaka’i Saili Matagi: Finding our way forward. Special invitations were sent out to the “Under 40’s” group, which met from 5 to 6:15 pm. Christian and Theone Al-bano, Ashley Santo, and Amy Yamaki represented

our church and pre-sented their opinions and hopes for our Con-ference. Three ladies from Hilo Coast UCC also attended.

The main meeting was attended by sixteen adults, with our Church well represented by Janet Fujioka, Woody Kita, Gloria Kobayashi, Esther Kodani, Carolyn Lum-Bellem, Anita Mathews, Jayson Rekis, and Bob and Sue Smith. Representatives from Olaa, Opihikao and

First United Protestant also provided feed-back.

As a result of these Mokupuni meetings, Ms. Scherr and the Strategic Planning Committee will be re-vising the Mission and Vision statements, ad-dress the needs of young adults and young families, and ad-dress the ways we can include all of our di-verse congregations. Her report is due at the ‘Aha Pae’aina on June 9, 2018.

This Time is a celebration of my time studying Performing Arts here in Hilo. The audience will be introduced to my early foundations in music from when I first started choral music at Kamehameha Schools Maui, all the way up to my beginnings in musical theatre and then voice training at the University of Ha-wai'i at Hilo. This recital is one of my final requirements to complete to achieve the Bachelor of Arts in Performing Arts, as I will be graduating this Spring!
