Sometimes the things you think won’t work… do.
The world is a confusing place.
Life confirmed this sim-ple truth once more for me as I selected my shoes for the YWCA’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event last month. In years past, I have looked for some-thing with an ankle strap to hold my heel to the sole of the shoe. They have never ever worked. Every time, I’ve been un-able to tighten them enough, and my heels have simply lifted out of the strap with every step.
This year, one of the YWCA volunteers steered me toward something else: a thong style shoe. I was skeptical. They had nothing to hold my heels in place, nothing at all. But the volunteer seemed optimistic, and for some reason there weren’t many options in my size, so I followed her advice, took off my socks, squirmed my toes be-neath the straps, and set
to walking.
The heels stayed right with me, uphill and downhill, across the Bayfront, and back to the Y. It was the easiest walking I’ve ever done in high heeled shoes.
I wonder how many other things I’ve failed to do in my life because I tried the things that looked like they’d work and didn’t try the things that looked like they wouldn’t work. I won-der how often the Church has clung to the obvious (and the obvi-ously unsuccessful) ra-ther than experiment with something differ-ent. I wonder how long we’ve contented our-selves with the inade-quate when the glorious was one unlikely at-tempt away.
The world is a confusing place.
I’ve got to try some more things that I don’t think will work.

Happy 100th Birthday Chiyoko!
O n Monday, October 21st, Pastor Eric, several church members, and her family joined the folks at Hilo Island Adult Care Center to honor Chiyoko
Nakamura who was celebrating her 100th birthday. Songs, dances, a few words of congratulations, and a huge cake were shared during the festivities. Chiyoko, who retired as a registered nurse after many years at Hilo Hospital, was very happy! We congratulate her on her birthday and wish her many more!

I n the Sanctuary on Tuesday, November 5th we will introduce the lovely Gustav Holst piece which is being featured at our 2019 Christmas Eve ser-
vice. This approximately 8 minute composition includes 4 favorite carols combined into a fun medley of holiday music. The name of Holst's music is called “Christmas Day,” and it is written for choir, strings, and piano. (Yes, we will sing with 7-member string ensemble.)
If you want to participate in this choir, you need to attend on Nov. 12 at 5pm, which is the last open rehearsal. All subsequent rehearsals will be closed to newcomers. Our singers will practice every Tuesday from 5-5:55 leading up to Christmas Eve. All are welcome. Nearly a dozen singers from around the community will be joining us in this presentation.
This piece does not require advanced musical skills, just a heart for group singing and a committed attitude to attendance. It also demands some vocal stamina and an ear for familiar carols, plus time to learn some tricky musical transitions which are thrown in to keep everyone on their toes.
