Food and Friends: A Free Community Meal

Thursday, January 11th & 18th at 5:15 PM

We want to extend hospitality to all and to serve others. We do both of these during our Thursday Evening Food & Friends. We invite the people of our neighborhood and those needing special support to come and have dinner with us. Our members cook and serve this meal. There is a short devotional time before the meal.

We have been blessed with several new cooks for Food and Friends allowing us to continue this ministry to the community - during November and December, there will be only one held those months due to the holidays. Thank you to everyone that has signed up and thank you to the many volunteers who continue to assist with preparation, desserts, serving and cleanup. Please feel free to contact Carole Hunt, Food & Friends Coordinator to sign up ([email protected]). To donate a dessert item, you may contact Sheryl Melville ([email protected])

Confirmation Classes 2018 Beginning the second Sunday in January, Pastor Cook will offer a Confirmation course for our youth interested in confirming their faith and joining the Church as a full and responsible member. The classes will take place on Sunday mornings at 9:30-10:30 AM in the Youth Loft. Candidates to be confirmed, known as confirmands, take a class which covers Christian doctrine, theology, United Methodist Church history, stewardship, basic Bible study and other topics. All youth in 7th grade or above are welcome to sign up. A sign up for can be found in the Youth Loft or in the Church office. Or, email Pastor Cook at [email protected] to receive a form by email.

Our Bad Weather / Snow Emergency Policy:

Every church ought to have a stated snow emergency policy and here is Christ UMC's: Worship Services: Christ UMC is always open for worship on Sunday regardless of snow. You need

not consult the TV or radio; we will be open. However, if the State closes the roads, which sometimes does happen, only then will we cancel services.

Meetings/Activities: If the weather is at all doubtful, please contact us before coming … check your email, Facebook, and/or call the church office (762-7042) or chair/leader of meeting/event directly.

If you do not feel safe going out in snowy and icy weather, stay home -- be safe!

Pilates Pilates is a system of light work-outs to improve balance, strength and muscle tone — particularly your core muscles. The group is led by Kelly Soliday, a certified Pilates instructor. We are especially interested in getting middle-aged and senior men to take this class, as the benefits are exceptional. However, we encourage anyone who is interested to

attend. Pilates class usually meets on Mondays at 4:00 PM in the Wilson room. Cost is

$10 per session. Mats are supplied and this is a great way to work out! You are welcome to join us.

Standing at the Beginning of a New Year - by Joyce Rupp Sacred Mystery, waiting on the threshold of this new year, you open the gates and beckon to me: "Come! Come! Be not fearful of what awaits you as you enter the unknown terrain, be not doubtful of your ability to grow from its joys and sorrows. For I am with you. I will be your Guide. I will be your Protector. You will never be alone." Guardian of this new year, I set aside my fears, worries and concerns, I open my life to mystery, to beauty, to hospitality, to questions, to endless opportunity of discovering in my relationships, and to all the silent wisps of wonder that will draw me to your heart. I welcome your unfailing Presence and walk with hope into this new year.

Here we are at the threshold of a new year. What does the year ahead have in store for us? We cannot say nor can we know. We can only walk in faith each day. But, we are a people called to live by faith and trust in the God who loves us and has come to us in Jesus Christ. We are not a people of fear. Some will prefer to live in the past ; many fear the future. But you cannot live in the past nor fear the future and enjoy today.

If you have had surgery you understand that a surgeon and their team drape your body except for the area to be operated upon. That becomes their main focus of attention. A surgeon does not give in to distractions. In that same way we can focus on today and live our best. We cannot change the past and we are not yet in the future. But Jesus heals the wounds of our past so they become for us important lessons on our journey. And the past victories we can celebrate as markers of how we have come this far by faith as guided by God’s Spirit.

So, what of the future? We understand that our world is one where many people are far from God. There are places where violence reigns and seeks to choke out wisdom, patience and understanding. Many in our world live in darkness and in the shadow of death. We recognize that the marketplace and the media, politicians and system will skew things to their advantage. We do not put our trust in them; but rather we read the Bible, God’s Word to us, to gain a better, wiser and eternal perspective so we may interpret the times in light of God’s plan to heal this world by grace. In prayer, we wait upon God to guide us by His Spirit.

Whatever may come in this new year of 2018, we believe that God in Christ is with us. And we believe that God holds us in his care always. So, there is no need to fear. We belong to God for this life and life eternal and we walk with hope. There is a worthy work—joyous work— for us in the year ahead as we share God’s Word and live for him. Best of all, whatever may come, God is with us.

Susannah’s Pantry People come to Christ Church seeking immediate food help each week. You can help by donating canned and dry foods that can easily be stored and kept in Susannah’s Pantry. It is amazing to see how God touches people to fill the pantry and amazing to see how many this little cupboard helps!

Some non-perishable (no refrigeration required) items that we could use are: Spaghetti Sauce, Canned Meats (ham, tuna, chicken),

and Canned Fruits/Applesauce.

Occasionally, we have requests for personal care items (toilet paper, shampoo, soap, razors, etc) – donations of personal care items are appreciated.

Thank you for all your donations to Susannah’s Pantry! With your help, dozens of people have received much needed food. Thank you for helping to feed others in the love of Christ!

Think Green Christ Church has recycling programs to help the environment. We want and need your help. Don’t throw those old batteries, cell phones, ink cartridges, or metal items in the trash. Bring them to the church so they can be kept out of landfills and recycled.

Metal Recycling: We can take and recycle anything made of metal or with metal in it, with the exception of TV’s, computer monitors (computers are ok), tires and stuffed furniture. Any appliance large or small, anything run electrically or with batteries is okay.

Updates (April 2010 - December 10, 2017 ) Total weigh of metal recycled 834,819 pounds Current balance in recycling fund $ 28,735.96 Total earned by recycling $ 86,969.48

Aluminum Cans Pull-Tabs: A pull-tabs recycle tub is in the narthex to Frank Hall next to all the other recycle tubs. When we collect enough tabs, we will take them to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey.

Batteries: A battery recycle tub is by the narthex to Frank Hall – household batteries of all kinds – even hearing aid batteries can be deposited there. They will then be taken for recycling.

Empty Ink-jet Cartridges: Most Inkjet Cartridges can be recycled and re-manufactured. Please place the cartridge in its original box or in a plastic bag to keep it safe from spills and damages. Place your empty cartridges in the jar in the Second Street Entrance.

Noah’s Ark Christian Child Care A Ministry of Christ United Methodist Church

Seasons are constantly passing and we wonder where the time goes. Before we moved into the Christmas spirit and left yet another Thanksgiving behind, I read the staffs November observations of our preschoolers. The children were asked what the word Thanksgiving makes them think of. Some of the responses were: eating turkey and strawberries, my family is happy, pilgrims, turkey bone, thankful, eat corn and apples, the turkey with Christmas lights (I hope they meant and), you give food like the Indians, car and piggy (which made me curious too), and many other things. The staff also offered a science experiment that asked students what will happen to Indian Corn when it’s placed in water. I enjoyed the innocent hypotheses of the children like: it’s gonna disappear, it will die, it will turn into juice, explode and blow out the ceiling, and it will blow bubbles. The most important lesson learned this season was that Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful. Our School Age children published a book that shared what they were thankful for.

The end of this week concluded our learning partnership with Penn State Mont Alto Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. Every Thursday afternoon, from Mid-September to the end of November, the Sophomore OTA students would be actively learning about “Play as an Occupation” with our toddlers, preschoolers, and after school children. This was truly a learning experience for both the college students and Noah’s Ark Children.

Recently, the staff has been teaching the children what a precious gift God sent into the world by giving us His only Son, Jesus. Our staff focuses on teaching the children the true meaning of Christmas, rather than getting them excited only for the presents under the tree. To help the teachers and families with this message, Noah’s Ark does not do individual gift exchanges in the classrooms. Instead, the practice of giving to others is encouraged, just like how Jesus gave His only son to us. Noah’s Ark encourages each family to participate by using an Advent calendar of 25 Random Acts of Kindness. The hope is that each family and child attempt one act of kindness per day. For each act of kindness completed, a 25ȼ deposit will go toward the Children Helping Children gift that will be donated to our local Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library.

Look for the pink Box Tops on hundreds of participating products. For a list of participating products, pick up a list in Frank Hall, in Noah’s Ark office, or go to www.boxtops4education.com/earn/participating-products. Each label is worth 10¢ to Noah’s Ark and they add up fast! Thank you for your help collecting Box Tops for Noah’s Ark.
