Volume 2, Issue 23 June 05, 2012

I was packing early one evening for the long trip

to the Philippines to see my very sick dad when

I received the call that he just died. A mixture

of emotions swept over me and I felt numb.

There was a sense of shock, for no one in our

immediate family had ever died. There was deep sadness because it had been eighteen

years since I saw him. There was also great re-

gret. I put off doing something the Lord laid on

my heart to do for my dad, and now it was too

late.

Unwritten Tribute... (continued from page 1)

About three years before, Kim and I attended a family confer-ence led by Dennis and Barbara Rainey. The Raineys challenged us to write a tribute to each of our parents. They said talk about what each meant to us, the values they passed on, how they challenged and inspired us.

I tried to ignore the challenge because of my rocky relation-ship with my dad. My dad was a brilliant writer and movie director. His peers recognized his talent by nomi-nating him twice to the equiva-lent of the Oscar's Best Screen-play category. My dad coached

me in declamation/speech con-tests when I was in grade school. I knew that I won many awards because of my dad's ability which he instilled in me to convey through tone of voice and gestures what the poet was feeling and communicating. He also taught me to write by

challenging me to read. I was in third grade when he taught me to use the typewriter so I could go ahead and type my thoughts faster than just writing them down. He tried to teach me to act. He coached me in how to use a movie camera-- when to do close-up, panning,

zooming in and out, etc.

But he and I did not get along. I felt like he never understood me, nor did he even try. After I became a believer and as the Lord deepened my walk with Him, I learned that I needed to forgive my dad, which I did. When the Raineys talked to us

about writing a tribute, it was like the Lord was telling me that He knew I had forgiven my dad. Now it is time to show him that I love him, by writing a tribute to him. Which I kept putting off, until it was too late. I have asked the Lord's forgive-ness for my disobedience, and I

know He has forgiven me. But there is still regret in my heart. There are many things I wish I could have said and encouraged my dad with, but did not get to. For Father's Day in our church, we are asking you to write a trib-ute to your dad and turn it in to the church. We will have prizes

for different age groups. But the greatest prize you can get is to see your dad's reaction when you read your tribute to him in per-son. Don't put it off like I did.
