FROM LAKAN…
Not in Neutral. What would be your birthday wish if you
were about to turn 91?
I could hear shuffling inside the house after I rang the door bell. I was not sure if Roy heard the bell, because it was
taking him longer than usual to come to the door. Then I heard him fumbling with the door knob, and the door opened
and the familiar smiling face greeted me.
The Reverend Roy Heimbecker ushered me into the living room. We sat down and visited about family, about life,
about our Lord Jesus. I have known Roy for all the years he has been in San Angelo. He and his wife Mary had pastored
in the Chicago area until they retired. But they did not really
retire.
Mary, when she was still living, even though confined to a wheel chair, led ladies' Bible study groups. Mary was known
for making homemade jelly, and she would put scripture passages on the outside of the jar and give them away.

Our Preteen Students are having a fundraising Garage Sale to help them raise funds for their Summer Retreat! If you have items you would like to donate for the sale, please bring them by the church. If you need help getting them here, please contact Philip Cross at the church office.
She also used to cut pic-tures out of magazines
and paste them on cards she made and send them
to people for encourage-ment. I was with them
on one occasion at the hospital waiting room
when Mary saw a dis-traught family. She
asked Roy, whom she af-fectionately called “Rev,”
to wheel her to the fam-ily. She visited with the
family and led them in
prayer. She and Roy would call people if they
did not see them at the worship service to make
sure they are doing okay.
Roy at 90 still goes to church every Sunday and
Wednesday. He still leads a Bible study at the
County jail. I could sense
his heart breaking as he talked about his
neighbors who do not know our Lord Jesus. It
did not surprise me that his passion for the Lord
has not diminished over the years but has in fact
intensified.
Like so many times in the over twenty years that I
have known Roy, we bowed our heads in
prayer before I left.
There was a sacredness about that place, about
that moment, because for me it was a familiar ex-
perience and place with God. I cannot remember
the number of times Roy and I had been on our
knees, while Mary sat on her wheel chair, as we
prayed for our churches, for people, for family.
Now with a quavering

voice and a heart that
more than ever beats strong for his Lord, Roy
prays that God will not allow his life to be in neu-
tral. That God will let him continue to share Je-
sus with his neighbors, with others.
Roy could have prayed for a lot of things. He
could have prayed for an even longer life. But he
prayed that his life will not be in neutral. He
prayed to be used of the
Lord until his dying breath. Roy is “good
man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a
great number of people were brought to the
Lord.” (Acts 11:24)
King Jesus, grace your Church with more Roy
Heimbeckers.

$11000.00 Given to Date: $ 6815.00
On the last Sunday of each month we receive the Lord’s Sup-per. On that Sunday we will also ask for donations to our Agape Ministries. These ministries give us the opportunity to help those in need.
With your help, we can provide food boxes as well as supply-ing needed clothing, and help in other areas.
Please bring canned and/or nonperishable items with you as you come to worship with us Sunday, March 25th. There will be a box in the foyer where you may place your items.
You may also give a special offering to these ministries by placing it in the offering plate marked Agape.
Of course you are welcome to bring canned goods/non-perishables by the church office anytime!
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:17-18
