Nicolai had achieved great success with his Italian operas, but this was to become a German favorite. The Overture is a success in its own right and is played around the world, it even inspired a short film produced by conductor Johnny Green that won the Oscar for Best Short Subject in 1954. This arrangement stays true to the writing of Nicolai but is considerably shorter than the original. The piece starts at the end of the exposition section, runs through sections of the development and most of the recapitulation before ending with a condensed coda. This way, students can enjoy the wonderful melodies and clever transitions in a more manageable format. The meno mosso at measure 24 should be quite robust. Be careful of the subito pianos at the start of the flowing theme first found at the a tempo (measure 34), then also at measures 46, 102, and 132. A little lengthening of the beat before the start of the tune at measure 102 would be appropriate. A recording of this piece can be downloaded at www.kendormusic.com STEVEN FRACKENPOHL Steven Frackenpohl has been an orchestra director and string instructor in the public schools for many years, and is currently at the West Genesee School District in Camillus, NY. He has received degrees from Ithaca College and the Crane School of Music. His experience as a performer, teacher and director leads to an understanding of orchestral writing and arranging.
