in seizing jurisdiction of disputes involving the Internet.

Dr Anne-Marie Hill (AHS, 2008) spoke about "The role of patient education in reducing falls in older populations". She noted that, while education had been useful in preventing falls for in-patients, this education appeared to have been less useful in reducing the incidence of falls after discharge. The period immediately after discharge poses particular risks for elderly patients. She noted that vulnerable older people tended to view falls post-discharge as "accidents" whereas health professionals considered that falls were the result of risk factors, which could be mitigated through appropriate education. Anne-Marie is currently

From the SecretaryIt was a great honour to be part of the various activities of the MMSA and the Foundation on 29 November 2012.

The MMSA's AGM at Clarendon Terrace provided Scholars with an opportunity to hear about the latest developments in the Foundation's activities and to discuss ways in which Scholars could assist the Foundation in its efforts to further its activities in the future.

The AGM was followed by four inspiring presentation by Menzies Alumnae in various disciplines supported by the Foundation.

Dr John Hooper (Biomedical Science, 2000) presented on "Tackling Cancer Metastasis – One Step at a Time". Dr Hooper explained the process of metastasis and how this process makes it more difficult to develop curative therapies compared to treatment of primary cancer. He explained how a successful collaborative model among a broad range of medical practitioners in the "knowledge corridor" of Brisbane had enabled identification of the molecular drivers and development of treatment of metastasis in prostate, ovarian and colorectal cancer.

Justin Hogan-Doran (Law 1998) discussed private international law in cyberspace. After outlining the main elements of disputes involving private parties with foreign dimensions, he explained how these elements might be applied in the context of the Internet. Justin noted that transactions using the Internet posed particular problems because the Internet is generally regarded as "anational", "aspacial", with no clear jurisdictional boundaries. These problems are important and require consideration because of the large number of Internet users and the rapid growth of e-commerce. Justin referred to jurisprudence in the US which provides some guidance as to when courts might be justified

involved in a Menzies Pilot Trial to determine whether education can reduce the rate of falls after discharge.

Dr Stephanie Ward (Harvard, Medicine, 2009) explained how a combination of a large ageing population, decreasing birth rate and increases in life expectancy have increased the importance of her area of expertise – geriatric medicine. This area of specialisation focuses on disabilities that come with age, including dementia. She noted that an aim of her practice is to facilitate "healthy ageing". To this end, she is currently involved in a study known as ASPREE (Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly), which is considering whether aspirin can prolong a healthy life. Apart from the substantive results of the study, she noted that the study will be important because it will take place in the context of general practice and the results will ultimately be applied in general practice.

Scholars regrouped later that evening at the Cliveden Room at Hilton-on-the-Park for a surprise cocktail party to recognise and thank Sandra Mackenzie for her extraordinary contribution to the Foundation and, particularly, the MMSA for over 3 decades. Words of thanks were expressed by Liisa Laakso on behalf of Allied Health Scholars, Bill Rawlinson on behalf of Medical Scholars and Belinda Gibson on behalf of Law Scholars. Adrian McCallum kindly sent some words on behalf of Engineering Scholars, even though he was unable to attend the event in person.

The day culminated in the Annual Menzies Awards Dinner at Clarendon Terrace, where medallions were presented to the 2012 Scholars by Sir Robert Menzies' daughter, Mrs Heather Henderson. A new Menzies law scholarship – the Sir Ninian Stephen Menzies Scholarship in Law – was also announced.

The keynote speaker for the dinner, Simon Maddocks (Medicine, 1987), delighted us with reminiscences of his experience as a Menzies Scholar and particularly how the Menzies Scholarship had "opened doors" for him. Simon concluded his speech with a heartfelt tribute to Sandra Mackenzie. Sandra then took the floor and explained how she had been made aware of the tangible impact of the activities of the Foundation and the Menzies legacy through some seminal moments in her career at the Foundation. Sandra will be missed by all of us.

Liisa and I would like to thank all of you who participated in these activities and, particularly, the Foundation's Secretariat without whom none of these events would have been possible.

ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCESMRS VERITY PACEY is senior physiotherapist in the Connective Tissue Dysplasia Clinic at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead near Parramatta. The two-year Menzies Memorial Research Scholarship in the Allied Health Sciences will help her complete her PhD at The University of Sydney into the management and treatment of the connective tissue disease known as hypermobility or loose joints. This is an inherited condition which tends to occur most commonly in adolescent girls and can lead to pain, injury and fatigue.

“It’s a condition that affects a lot of people, but is really poorly recognised,” Verity says.

A professional physiotherapist for 13 years, Verity has a BAppSc with Distinction from the University of Sydney and a Graduate Certificate in Sports Physiotherapy from La Trobe University. Verity began the physiotherapy service to The Children’s Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine.

ENGINEERINGMISS MAHALA McLINDIN has been awarded the Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Engineering for 2013. Mahala holds the degree of BEng (Civil) with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney.

Mahala became interested in environmental engineering and water resources in the final year of her civil engineering degree in 2004. The next year she moved to the UK for five years to gain engineering experience. It was the middle of a construction boom, and Mahala worked on heritage buildings, roads and tunnels.

To follow her goal of water resource engineering, Mahala returned to Australia to work with Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) in Sydney. “Because of the Millennium drought that had been affecting Australia, there was a lot of investment in water

LAWMR DAVID HEATON is the successful candidate for the Menzies Memorial Scholarship in Law for 2013. He holds the degrees of LLB and BA from the University of Melbourne and won the 2009 Supreme Court Prize.

David is a Melbourne lawyer formerly with King & Wood Mallesons, presently working as an associate with the Boston Consulting Group. His current project involves improving the efficiency of a supply chain for a retailer. The job has provided him with the experience of working much more closely with a client than law usually allows, but it has also made him recognise his passion for the law.

He was Associate to Hon Justice Kenneth Hayne in the High Court of Australia. “I see myself in the longer term going to the Bar. After further study, I would like to practice in constitutional law, perhaps in a government solicitor’s office.”

David will undertake the two year BCL/MPhil at Oxford to explore the issues raised by executive powers of government.

resource research. So this was the place to be.” At SKM she has been working on a wide range of projects from integrated regional water planning to designs for individual projects, such as stormwater harvesting.

She has also inspected water projects in Cambodia through Engineers Without Borders, learning about the critical role of engineering in a developing nation.

“The MSc at Oxford will be great for me, because it’s not just a technical degree. It looks at all the different issues surrounding water and water resources — the science, the policy, the politics and social issues. It also provides an international perspective. Ultimately, I would like to contribute to achieving sustainable water practices and policies in Australia.”

The Menzies Brief 8

Who would you most like to meet?Nelson Mandela

1989 Menzies Scholar in MedicineWhat is your job?1. Head of the Mark Cowley Lidwill Research Program in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

2. Co-deputy Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

Sudden cardiac death caused by abnormalities in the electrical system that controls the rhythm of the heart beat account for ~10-12% of deaths in our community. The overall objective of my research is to elucidate the molecular origins of cardiac arrhythmias with the aim of improving risk stratification algorithms for predicting who is most at risk for sudden cardiac death.

What is the most fulfilling aspect of your work?1. Seeing how interactions between clinicians and basic scientists can contribute both to a better understanding of disease mechanisms and, in a few cases, better patient care.

2. Seeing junior staff blossom into independent scientists.

What is your favourite book?All time favourite would probably have to be Great Expectations. Holiday reading these days is mostly modern fiction and the occasional biography.

Where in the world would you like to visit?Antarctica

How has the Menzies Scholarship helped you?Pursuing a PhD in Cambridge not only gave me the opportunity to see what world class research was all about it also gave me the chance to fully immerse myself in academic life and to interact with a wide range of remarkable people from all over the world.

Who has inspired you? There are almost too many to mention but to name a few who have inspired my scientific work:

Philip Kuchel, my first supervisor, and still a scientific collaborator, for his unbounded enthusiasm for science;

Denis Noble for his remarkable intellect and perseverance in pursuing his goal of producing a computer model of the heart;

Joseph Goldstein and Michael Brown for showing what close collaboration between basic and clinical science can achieve.

On a personal level it is hard to go past my Mum and Dad.

From a global perspective, Nelson Mandela, a man who had the courage to stand up for what he believed in.

The Menzies Foundation sponsored a Menzies Session at the very successful 9th World Association for Laser Therapy (WALT) Congress held on the Gold Coast in September.

The conference theme was “The spectrum of laser – translating basic research to clinical outcomes”; and the sponsored session on laser for pain management included internationally renowned researchers Prof Tiina Karu and Prof Jan Bjordal who spoke on laser therapy cellular mechanisms and anti-inflammatory effects, respectively. Within the same session, Menzies Allied Health Science Scholar, A/Prof Liisa Laakso, addressed the topic “Assessing clinical responsiveness to low level laser therapy”.

Submissions are invited for sponsorship of a named lecture, symposium, presentation or workshop in 2013/14. The $5,000 grant is offered to provide an opportunity for Menzies Scholars to present their work at a major conference, workshop or symposium.

The requirements are:

• that a Menzies Scholar presents his or her work;

• naming of the “Menzies Foundation” session;

• that material promoting the Menzies scholarships/ fellowships be distributed to all attendees; and

• acknowledgement of the Menzies Foundation sponsorship in online and printed material, such as the program.

Funds have previously supported sessions such as a workshop for regional allied health professionals, and “The Menzies Symposium on Public Health – Preventing infection in organ and tissue transplants” presented as part of Pathology Update 2009 at the WasPALM International Combined Meeting.

Thank you! ... for your generous donations to the Menzies Memorial Scholars Association and Menzies Centenary Prize, and to the Foundation. Remember to keep the receipt for your tax deduction.

We are very grateful to the alumni who help support the MMSA and the Foundation in its funding of the next generation of scholars.

Donations can be made online at any time to:

Please email advice of your donation to [email protected]. A receipt will be returned by email.

The Menzies Foundation was established in 1979 to perpetuate the memory and the ideals of Sir Robert Menzies. The vision of those founding fathers (for indeed, they were all men), has been amply fulfilled through the success of the three daughter institutions bearing the Menzies name, through the Menzies Memorial Scholarship program, and through the workshops that the Foundation has convened to explore matters of national importance.

The Foundation continues to enjoy the strong support of the Menzies family, and continues its commitment to scholarships that can transform lives, just as scholarships transformed the life of Robert Menzies. Indeed, for the generations of Australians with no direct experience of the Menzies era, recognition of the Menzies name has been preserved and enhanced through the Scholarships program, and through the achievements of the alumni and the daughter institutions.

In the years to come, the scholarship alumni, as leaders in their professional fields in Australia and overseas, will play an increasing role in shaping the strategic direction for the Foundation itself. Currently, two long-standing directors of the Foundation (Simon Maddocks and Robyn O’Hehir) have been drawn from the talented pool of Menzies alumni. The MMSA provides an additional bridge between the alumni and the Foundation,

with the MMSA executive (currently Liisa Laakso and Dariel De Sousa) serving as directors of the Foundation.

The Foundation is working with the MMSA to explore how the contributions of the alumni in preserving the Menzies legacy might be sustained and enhanced, and to identify those alumni who might be prepared to help the Foundation through its next round of strategic planning and development. To our great delight, Sandra Mackenzie has agreed to travel around Australia to meet with alumni and friends of the Foundation, and to seek their suggestions and advice about future arrangements and possibilities. She will explore the feasibility of state-based activities for MMSA alumni and friends of the Foundation, amongst other matters, and report back to the Foundation and the MMSA executive.

We would welcome any suggestions that would help Sandra with this important task.

Tuesday 11 September, 2012

As part of the Melbourne Medical School’s 150th anniversary celebrations, nine individuals were presented with the degree of Honorary Doctor of Medical Science for their outstanding contributions to the field of medicine.

Doctoral recipients Ian Anderson, Lorraine Dennerstein AO, Joanna Flynn AM, James Guest AM, Sandra Hacker AO, Margaret Henderson OBE, John Mathews AM, Hugh Niall, and Richard Smallwood AO were in the presence of the Chancellor, academic staff, heads of colleges, deans of faculties, members of Council and the Provost for this historic occasion.

All have made valuable and enduring contributions to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities across the world.

‘The degree of Honorary Doctor of Medical Science is one of the highest honours the University can bestow upon an individual: an honour infrequently proposed and sparingly given,’ said the Chancellor, Ms Elizabeth Alexander.

Children, grandchildren, friends and colleagues of the doctoral recipients attended the conferring ceremony at University Hall to celebrate the achievements of their loved ones.

The 150th anniversary has proven a wonderful opportunity to recognise those who have made remarkable contributions to the University’s history. Earlier this year the Honorary Doctor of Laws was bestowed upon seven individuals for their lifelong influence and leadership in medical research and practice.

Both events have been of great symbolic and historical significance to the Melbourne Medical School.
